Is this the much needed change the program needed? I’m just glad we’re not “middle of the road” anymore, playing in Cleveland in March, and recruiting multiple MAC Player of the Years. Good thing Reagan likes engineering classes. Chuck Guthrie holds the program to a higher standard. Now excuse me, I’ll get back to monitoring the football transfer portal. We’re just one DB away from adding a second win in the MAC next year.

Still on track to finish with the same amount of wins over winning MAC teams as last year! With a far less experienced roster to boot.

Had someone told me Kent would shoot 29 free throws and Akron would shoot 17, would have thought we are real trouble. The first 8 minutes of the second half were not shining moments for the officials. Looked like they got together at the half and said let’s tighten this up.

The technicals are very subjective but if I was John Groce this game would go to the league office asking why Kent’s Freeman can make 3s and fly around chirping multiple times and not get T’d up. Congratulations kid, you had the half of your life but if those Ts on us were legit, he should have had a couple as well.

Still a great win. Go Zips!

Groce mentioned this in the post game presser. Their diet Freeman and Bass talked to Akron's bench a few times, I know hard to believe Bass made any field goals. I can understand Ali's as it was clear, though no doubt he was baited by the Kent bench. Tavari's was unbelievable.

  3. Groce would have gotten one himself late if the officiating crew wasn't aware of how terrible they were. The tall pretty boy who spent probably 2 hours on his hair, Luke Schumer, is a low tier Horizon League ref. Dreadful night for him, but he still gets the $2,500 game check plus expenses. Stupid game.

  4. 2 years ago, a reeling Kent team off the heels of a home loss to NIU saw its coming out party at home vs. the Zips behind 30 from Carry. This team likely doesn’t have the same potential as those Flashes, but as we know, if they get it rolling in that building, throw out the records. Zips need to bring it for 40 minutes.

  5. Weather looking dreadful for tomorrow. Zips have won 4/5 MAC games by double figures but have truly left a lot to be desired for long stretches in each game, even the early goings at NIU. I'm not sure the Zips can survive a bad first half in this environment, regardless of Kent's injury situation.

That Brown kid as a load.  He hadn't played since 12/16.  UConn to Texas A&M to WMU.  Quite a journey.

He was made eligible then, but has been playing off the bench. Strange management of his minutes. He could’ve scored a lot more if not for missing those 2 footers early. He allegedly makes a ton of NIL money at WMU.

  7. Buffalo reminds me of the 17-18 Zips. Holy smokes I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a pair of guys (Fulcher and Adams) miss so many shots that badly. Zips should have won that one by 30, if not 40. But we gotta take it. Worried about Nate.

Agree with @kreed5120 . GA tickets have fluctuated between $10-15 for literally as long as I can remember..

Akron athletics may be one of the single remaining entertainment entities, aside from the parking situation (which does suck), to ride out inflation without getting out of hand in this area. You could take a family of four to every Zips basketball game in a season and get some concessions for the same price as maybe attending a single Blossom Live Nation concert and sitting with the drunks and psychos up on the lawn. Throw in matching T-shirts, 4 beers for the adults and some sodas for the kids and you’re tacking on an extra $200 or so, probably more.

Minor league baseball is not a comp and will never be a comp. College basketball is played during the worst weather months of the year indoors, not outdoors May-August when it’s gorgeous 85% of the time.

Of all things Akron has done wrong over the years, and Lord knows it’s been plenty, ticket pricing doesn’t sniff the medal stand.

yeah the "a lot has changed" take would have some merit if he was maybe a coordinator/involved in game planning, but I don't see how it affects a positional coach too much.

Well, far more goes into being a coach than telling a guy it’s better to catch the ball than to not to. It’s a little bit of both. On one hand, he is extremely familiar with Akron and a few guys on staff. Also had a very successful coaching career. On the other hand, he last coached guys who were born in the 1980s and there was nothing called the transfer portal to deal with. I’m sure it’ll be fine, but it’s very reasonable to question and expect there to be a learning curve while getting back on the recruiting trail, if they even have him recruit at all.

We need to get more from Sammy.  So far in MAC play, he's 2 for 17 from the field and averaging 3 points and 4 rebounds a game.  Fortunately, other guys have stepped up to fill the void.

As Groce has said, he has maintained his contributions in the form of being a great team player. I’ve noticed he’s fighting harder for rebounds and loose balls, even without his shots falling. You can’t necessarily see that in the box score, but a guy like him could quickly de-rail a team if he wasn’t bought in. Not like we have any experience with something like that 😉

Did Nate even hit the ball on purpose? It looked like he dunked and the momentum just sort of knocked the ball into the crowd.

That foul on Tribble when he got tackled from behind was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. The fact that the announcers didn't even question half the calls against the Zips and Balls fans are whining blows my mind.

I think if anything, Nate was tapping it away from himself so he didn’t step on it. Stupid unnecessary call.

It almost seemed like he did it intentionally to disrupt the inbounding play (he was WAY over the line) but forgot we already had a delay warning. It could have been a big mistake…but thankfully wasn’t.

That was a terrifying moment. It’s dumb and they need to be more careful. The first warning on Nate was a stupid call for hitting the ball out after a made bucket, but that was par for the course for the evening.
