I didn't see the game, but it looks like a Chuck Martin special. The guy is good at getting a lead and milking that lead in an ugly , low scoring game.

Sorry, it's impossible at Akron. They're doomed.
It's not impossible. In fact, it's not difficult.

Not directly, but indirectly. The athletic program relies on institutional support to make up any shortfalls in the athletic budget.
That's not true either. 30 percent of all the budget needs of UofA are paid by the taxpayers. If not for the taxpayers, there is no UofA. If not for UofA there is no football team.

BG beat Toledo - that’s sobering.
Why? They made the best coaching hire in the MAC in years and are traditionally a solid MAC school. They were playing in front of a sold out stadium.
The only sobering thing is we can't seem to come close to doing the same.

For years many have told us that we can't play at the same time as OSU because nobody would show up. I always thought that if Akron put a decent team on the field at a time an day of week people would go if the program benefited the athletes students alumni fans and general community around Akron. Surely, we could get at least fifteen to twenty thousand to show up for a big game.
Well, I turn on the Toledo vs BG game that's starting at the exact same time as the OSU vs IL game, and the first words I hear are "Welcome to sold out Doyt Perry Stadium". Of course, I thought to myself that a lot of Toledo fans showed up..... Wrong, the stadium was almost completely orange.
Bowling Green is a cow town less than 30 miles from a city smaller than Akron. There is no greater Cleveland 30 miles away. Their record is not stellar at 2-4, but there is excitement around the team. People showed up. This isn't hard.

Why would the JAR be used over Memorial Hall in these situations?
I don't know. We used the JAR for winter conditioning also.

Here is an interesting article on what happens to college towns when enrollment declines.
https://www.theargumentmag.com/p/what-happens-to-college-towns-after
I guess for Akron it isn't impactful because Akron isn't a college town. The area around UofA is sort of like a small town, but the businesses seem to have right sized.

Did the Akron Zips football team really practice in cleats on the basketball court?
No. They were more the astroturf shoes worn on what used to be called astroturf. The shoes with tons of those little black dots on the soles. They left black streaks on the court.
Spring practice was very physical back then. We had full speed blocking and tackling in the court when it was too snowy to practice at the Rubber Bowl.

This same story could have been written 30 years ago about someone else.
The guy has zero big game wins. He can still beat Illinois and Rutgers if he spends a few less hours sitting around the football complex.

I think Joe is a good football mind, seems like a solid person, and is pretty much doing the best anyone else would be doing here in this era of college athletics. But if we want to be a respectable G5 program, he needs to adapt. Additionally, regardless of who the HC is, the University/Alumni/fan base need to step up their support. I don’t think any HC is going to produce a regular winner here without a respectable budget and NIL support.
I agree. He's Chuck Martin without the financial support and competent ADs. Martin has a slightly under .500 record at Miami, but has won 61% of his MAC games. He has been to six bowl games in 12 years.... actually six in 11 if you discount the COVID-19 season. Akron fans would take this in a second.

That may be the best outcome for everyone lol. Tangible progress by increasing wins from last season, no legal bills trying to get the bowl ban overturned, and no wasted expenses for a likely bowl game blow out.
I had better outcomes in mind before the season started.
There weren't going to be any legal bills.
Bowls are a no lose proposition. For schools like Akron, it's a nice reward for a decent season. If you win, great. If you lose, it doesn't harm a program and the loses are quickly forgotten during the Holiday season.

Under the assumption we are favorites vs Kent and umASS (though there is no such thing as a penciled in win for us), can we get 2 out of the 4 vs Ball St, Buffalo, Miami, and BG to get to 6?
Zips get one of those four. If they are going to do that it needs to be next weekend. It will be Miami's second road game in a row. Akron pulls off an upset at The Big Dialer. 31-28.

Now just need to find a way to get out of the Tuesday games that kill home attendance.
The contract expires after next season according to the internet. They have three options:
1. Extend the contract.
2. Don't renew and do something smarter.
3. Do something dumber.
2 of 3 choices are horrible. One can work.

It's nice to look at the MAC standings and not see Akron in the heap of crap at the bottom.
It does my heart good to see NIU flailing in their last year in the conference. Good riddance. If they think it's bad now, just wait.

A big tailgate for homecoming with a cover band, conference title celebration, and renewing wedding vows with zippy which was cute. They had cheap beer and food plus inflatables and tents with fans. Really nice setup I was there for 4 hrs and had a great time
Good idea. A win today builds momentum for fan interest next week.

On the spur of the moment I decided to attend the game since the weather was perfect. It is one of the best games by Akron in a long time. They had a nice balence of runs and passing and the receivers were open most of the afternoon. The defense made some great plays right before the half. Just wish we could have more games like today. I thought Finely was the best. On the interception it was a bad pass but the defender made a nice play on the ball. Makes me look forward to next week.
Amen. Wins like this on days like this makes me happy for those who can, and do, attend games. It's what college football should be. Today benefited the athletes students alumni fans and general community around Akron. This is what a public university should do.

When is the last time Akron had to put a hands team on the field to get a kick to win a game?

Private equity is looking to spend $2 billion to buy a 5% share of future Big 10 distributions.
The Big Ten is a good bet.The footprint the conference leads to money. Los Angeles has Hollywood money and West coast money. Seattle has big tech money. Oregon has Nike money. Cities like Philadelphia, New York, Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Minneapolis have loads of money. Now that college football is about money, the more money you have, the better odds of success.
The two biggest money schools in the SEC are Texas and TX A and M because they have oil money. The rest of the SEC only has car dealership money and that ain't that much in comparison.
The Big Ten has a huge money advantage moving forward.

My issue is not entirely about the one bid conference issue. It's more about the demands of a conference that does not serve us well.
I'm always here to help. The MAC does not serve us. The conference is a member organization. As such, the members make the decisions. The problems at Akron are almost entirely of our own making.
The MAC commissioner and other schools have not hired a series of mid level, at best, ADs since Mack. Nor did they force us to hire Ianello, Arth and keep on to Bowden too long. Further, the MAC is not forcing Akron to fund the program like it's Grandma's checkbook.
Ya, the weeknight games are a laughable joke at this point, but other schools seem to be able to win regardless. If the weeknight games go away, what evidence is there that Akron will be able to maximize that opportunity?

The World of College Football
in Akron Zips Football

I'm 56. In my life, the following schools were doormats. Kansas State, Baylor, Wake Forest, Iowa State TCU, Vanderbilt. Somehow they are respectable now. It wasn't that hard either. They just made good, basic decisions.
