  1. No doubt they have an impact. Handled properly, a negative can be turned into a positive. One recruit might stay away. Handled properly, ten more might replace him. Anzalone was pretty squishy about going to tosu in the first place and the whole twitter thing was his reason for getting out of something he was having second thoughts about.
  2. Paterno turning Sandusky into the cops, standing up for a thorough investigation/prosecution and standing up against child abuse would have made him even more popular. It would have reinforced what people believe when they thought of Paterno: Honor, Integrity, etc. People wouldn't have had enough good things to say about him.
  3. My brother just sent me a text saying, "Welcome to the Big Ten Notre Dame." Notre Dame isn't a better program than psu, but they have a big name. Short term it is a good move. I think the statement, Big Hat, No Cattle (or something like that) applies to Notre Dame.
  4. I'd respectfully say there is a third option at work. That option is the creation of a tyrant in the president of the ncaa. The ncaa members today gave dictatorial powers to the president of the ncaa, just like the Galactic Senate gave power to the Sith Emperor in Star Wars. In Star Wars, the Senate gives up power because they lived in FEAR of some uprisings so they created a dictator and it brought everyone suffering because fear leads to suffering and the Dark Side. Everytime something comes up now, the ncaa members are going to want their dictator to deal with it because they are in fear of having to do anything about it. No good is going to come out of what happened today.
  5. Or, the problem could have been dealt with in a proactive manner that wouldn't have had such drastic results. Paterno could have been forced to step down years ago and a modern coach could have taken control of the team. psu would be a lot better off today. It is a leap of logic I'm not willing to take to believe a competitive edge was created by this. One could easily argue Paterno staying around for as long as he did kept psu at a competitive disadvantage.
  6. I don't know about the whole economy of central PA, but there will be people impacted. Who else is impacted? Well, how about the loads of Title IX programs the revenue from the football team was carrying? psu is going to have to make cuts. What about the Big Ten? They basically just lost one of the only three teams people around the US have any interest in. I don't think psu vs. Big Ten Team X is going to be quite the draw it once was. An average-good conference just became average. I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Ten gives the boot to psu within 10 years. This is the whole point about fear leading to suffering. It isn't going to happen tomorrow, but a lot of innocent people will suffer because of this penalty. The ncaa took the path to the Dark Side today.
  7. I know I'm spot on. Fans are the same everywhere. After what I saw last year, I won't go to another Zips game until they are better. My time is too valuable to me. I still love them, but I can't put time/money into something that doesn't make me happy. Teams win, lots of fans go to games. Teams lose, lots of fans stop going. At the end of the day, it is a financial transaction. If fans see the value in going to a game, they will spend their money to go. If they don't, they won't. The fair weather fan is the best type of all because he cares and won't accept watching crap.
  8. It's hard to tell attitude on a fan web board, that's why people shouldn't get emotional about what is said. My comment was based upon the assumption games would still sell out, not child molestation.
  9. My experience in life is the strength of the opinion is usually measured by the amount of money a person is willing to place on the outcome. I'd be willing to bet in excess of $2,500.00 that in three years, psu home games will not be selling out.
  10. Slate One of the things I'm a little shocked about today is how poorly received the ncaa's punishments are in the media. I though those in the mob carrying the pitchforks would be much more happy.
  11. How much of your personal money would you be willing to bet on this?
  12. Let's do a little exercise. There is going to be a snowball effect here. psu is going to become a DII football team here in the next couple of years and it will continue for at least six years. Fans stop going to games because anyone with half a brain won't go watch crap (within five years, they will be lucky to fill half the stadium). Watching a psu game in the near future will be like watching the Zips last season. Fewer fans and season ticket holders means less money coming into support psu athletics/university. Less donations will be given to support the athleic department/university. In addition to the $12 million a year, many more millions will be lost for the University. How do you think the University is going to just get more money from an already bankrupt state government? How do you bridge the gap? Here is how you do it. In the near future, if he hasn't already started to do so, the president of psu is going to have to start thinking about a reduction in the workforce at psu that will have to take place as a result of the loss of income from football. I don't see any way around it. As employees get layoff notices, the implact will be felt in a small community like State College. Very few places need any type of athletics to boost their economy. State College needs psu football to keep that school going. If psu football built that place, and it did, the lack of football will destroy it.
  13. Deadspin These guys get it right again. This punishment is a big bunch of nothing, just like the clowns in Indianapolis. $60 million for a fund not at psu. Nonsense..If anyone should have that fund sent up at their institution, it should be psu. I said so yesterday in a post I made. Bowl ban...psu was on the brink of becoming terrible in the first place. They didn't have too many bowls in their future. Vacated wins.... Reduction of scholarships? Who suffers? Future players. There are a finite number of potential scholarships each year in the universe of college football. They just made it so a number of players won't be able to go to college. Nice work proving Yoda right ncaa. 5 year probation to work with an ncaa monitor? Who is this monitor going to be and what experience does that person have in monitoring potential child abuse? In fact, monitor what? This is laughable. I said the ncaa should do nothing and they basically did. The they did do will yield little results.
  14. Darn. I was feeling really magnanimous when I was typing that.
  15. I know I've been hard on the guy over the years, but I'd like to give credit where credit is due. This credit is especially deserved when a player reaches his greatest achievement at a university....... Congratulations to Charlie Frye for his first BCS victory.
  16. I think TB is a pretty smart guy, but not this smart.
  17. The slow start can be explained by that. It doesn't explain the end of the season though.
  18. I agree. The fans have been MORE than patient with this program since KD took over. Enough is enough. It's time to add some depth to the success of the program. If not next year, then when? I'm still the same believer in this group of players as I was after the Miss State victory last year. I love what I see. There is a ton of talent and it's up to them to put it all together next year. We need more of the program that beat Miss State and less of the program that pooped their pants in the MAC Championship game and against the seventh place Big Ten finisher in the NIT.
  19. We don't know what would have happened if this issue came out years ago so they ncaa shouldn't punish based upon what might have happened. Do we really want the the ncaa playing a guessing game...they aren't even good at rulinig on issues when they know facts. I agree they engaged in wrondoing and the criminal system has that under control right now.
  20. I'll answer the question second and respond to the second paragraph first. Anyone who has seen the 30 for 30 about smu knows EVERYONE was involved. It was truely an institution out of control in a very entertaining way. A sitting governor of Texas was involved in the smu matter, the president of the university, the AD, the coaches, the assistant coaches, the trainers, the players, the players parents and grandparents, the boosters were also involved. Not only were they involved, they kept doing it after being caught once and went on probation that involved no TV or bowls for a year. Now that's lack of institutional control. tosu and usc got what the deserved under the outdated rules of the ncaa. OK, so they punish psu by punishing everyone associated with the program. Under your logic, allow the players to leave and punish the coach who just got there and THEN punish future players. Punish the season ticket holders? Punish the guy who owns a hotel that only profits because PSU plays seven home games a year and he can break the bank those days? None of these people have done anything wrong. The logic makes no sense to me so ncaa punishments make no sense to me...most ncaa rules don't make sense to me. I think the people who run it are idiots. So, what would I do? If I had to punish someone or something for doing something, I'd like to think those involved would be there to take part in the punishment. The problem at PSU is there is nobody left to punish who was there when the Sandusky problems happened. At smu, all of the players taking money the first time they went on probation had to play under that probation. When the problems continued, those playing for smu when the death penalty was handed down were still playing at smu at the time so there was a direct line between the punished and the punishers. Again, what would I do?.....Nothing. There is nobody to punish at this point. What would I do if I was psu? First, start fundraising immediately to research the most effective ways to prevent child abuse and support those victims of child abuse. This can be accomplished through the criminal justice department and psychology department to name a couple. Use the fundraising to hire the best researchers in these areas to understand and recommend how to prevent and treat child abuse. Use part of that money to train future law enforcement officers in methods of indentifying and bringing to justice child abusers. Second, research and fund methods of preventing child abuse throughout Pennsylvania through public awareness campaigns. Third, hold annual seminars in State College and branches throughout Pennsylvania, free to the public, to increase public awareness about child abuse and methods of reporting that abuse. Fourth, organize alumni and current students and their organizations to lobby the PA state legislature to better fund law enforcement officers in the area of child abuse enforcement and identification. Fifth, request participation from current and past athlete-students in points 1-4...I'm sure not many would turn this opportunity down....can't use the current players if they aren't playing....that's how you deal with something negative, by introducing the positive and taking postive action. Nothing positive comes out of the ncaa forcing anyone to do anything and only punishing.
  21. Article I touched on fear in a previous post on this thread. The article is about fear. Sandusky's victims were incredibly fearful of him and that's the way he wanted it. Sandusky is truely a monster. Rape is not a sexual act. It is a violent act designed to destroy another human through fear and violence. Tomorrow, the NCAA is going to hand out some penalties for psu that will only lead to suffering for people who had nothing to do with this situation. The ncaa is going to lash out because they are in fear that people will say they aren't doing enough. Because they are making decisions based out of fear, the penalties will only serve to make the job of those at psu who really want to do something meaningful about this situation (unlike a meaningless gesture of taking a statue down) more difficult. Further suffering will be created. The last paragraph of the article reads as follows (throw in "nor the ncaa" as it relates to fear and psu): "But often, the most important defense of civilization takes place only after tragedy has struck, and innocents have perished. And the real heroes are neither police nor politicians nor an imaginary batsuited billionaire, but the people — whether in Columbine or Lower Manhattan or now Aurora, Colo. — who carry one another through the valley of the shadow of death, and by their conduct ensure that the Jokers and James Holmeses of the world win only temporary victories." If anyone thinks the ncaa president is the cowboy on the white horse coming to town to save the day in this situation, you are just plain wrong. If you beleive any positive, meaningful outcome will happen as a result of the ncaa's penalties, you are just plain wrong. The ncaa is a band of fools and everyone with half of a brain knows it. The real heroes will be those with no institutional power to hand down penalties of any type. Their only power will be moral authority. You will never see them and you will never know them, but they will be out there doing good work for victims and potential victims of this crime.
  22. I don't think any of this is really about past competition. It is about fit. Moore has had success in his life as a QB. It didn't come in a pro style offense and didn't come in a heavily pass oriented spread offense. It came in a spread where the QB ran more than TBs offense is designed for him to run. Moore playing in Coach I's offense was trying to put a square peg into a round hold and he didn't fit. The same could be said for TB using him in his offense. He wouldn't be a fit for TBs offense either so he has to move on. If Moore wants to play again, he needs to find a program that runs the type of offense he is suited to play. He is more Julian Edelman than Weeden. He made a terrible decision to come to Akron in the first place. It was never a fit.
  23. In that case, I'll kick around the idea of opening a place on campus that serves lard cones.
  24. They could, but they won't.
