  1. That would be awesome. Dr Z could load up on old, tired cliches/bad internet articles and I could load up on facts/analysis about the game.
  2. Normal, everyday cliches don't apply to the Browns.
  3. This segment is on HBO2 right now.
  4. No. A part of me thinks for good reason. A part of me thinks it would be great to watch and makes a ton of sense. It really has me questioning some of my beliefs about what teams should do in various situations. The placement of the ball on the 30 for kickoffs would make it very dangerous for a college team. I think high schools still kickoff from the 40 so if you don't get an OS kick, you still have them on their side of the 50. The quality of FG kickers comes into play as well...It wouldn't take many yards if you lose the OS kick to be in FG range for a college kicker. I do know this, over 50% of NFL FG attempts over 50 yards are successful. That's too many so I believe the goal posts should be closer to require more aggressive actions on the part of the offense so a coach like this might help change the game in that respect. This paradigm would really change play calling and introduce more variety into all of the downs. More than anything, I like creativity in coaching. This guy has 12 OS kicks they practice each day and they use every bit of the rule book trying them. One might think that when the other team knows it is coming, it would be easier to stop the OS try, but it isn't because of the creativity. You called this guys philosophy "extremely aggressive". Prior to watching HBO RS, I might have called it the same thing. After looking at the stats, I'm not sure it is either extreme or aggressive as much as smart coaching. A high school coach is there to teach kids how to play football and put them in the best position to win. The number of state championships he has won proves he does his job well.
  5. Thanks JZ84. I just bought it.
  6. Article If any of you get HBO, check out the story on the coach in the article above. Quite the eye opening story and it turns the whole way of how we view football upside down. Until they interviewed the economist, I had no idea how likely it is to make it on fourth down. I had no idea how stupid NFL coaches are when they punt on 4th and 2 from the other team's 36. Also, this guy onsides kicks every time...and for good reason...it works and the stats say it works. He once scored 28 points in the first four minutes of a state semi-final game. Great TV article. Economist from story has a book about football statistics. Can't think of the name of it. If anyone knows the name of the book from the TV article, please post.
  7. Never heard of the guy. I guess it just goes to show that with the number of media outlets out there right now, there are a lot of people who get nonsense printed.
  8. Four things won that game yesterday for the Giants. 1. The Giants had 19:45 TOP in the first half and 37:05 overall. An OFFENSE keeping the ball that long early destroys a defense and eventually they prevail late. The winning drive was against an exhausted NE defense. 2. The Giants punter had three punts inside the 20 last night. One resulted in a bad call by the refs on the intentional grounding. I rooted for the Giants, but that was a terrible call. If you spoon feed a defense, they can do these types of things. If not, they aren't smart enough to win games on their own. 3. For a team that only scoered 21 points, Giants moved the ball like crazy totaling 410 yards total. Yards = change in field position and long drives for the other teams offense. Again, if you spoon feed a defense, they can actually do something and create the illusion they are the reason for the victory. 4. OFFENSIVE big plays always dictate the course of a game. Usually, those plays are 40+ yards, but the 38 yard pass late (longest play of the game) in the game set up the Giants to win against a defense they had worn down throughout the game. NE played excellent defense on that play and the Giants still completed the pass. I'll throw in one more. Talent won the game for Giants. Would a GM rather have the receivers of the Giants or the Wes Welkers of the world and a couple of decent tightends? They take the WRs eveytime because of the talent and big play potential. In almost every positon, the Giants are more talented than NE. People are questioning if Belichick has lost it or not?....They are crazy. The guy almost won the Super Bowl with not the best talent. Give NE the Giants talent and they win easily. Congrats to Chase and having a great game. I'll be interested to see what happens to him next year. This was his best year on the field and he was cut by the Giants early for whatever reason. Almost out of the league. I don't believe there weren't at least a few teams who took note of his play this year and will try to sign him next year. He proved a lot as a starter. He also continues to be very good at special teams. There is a spot out there somewhere for him. BTW, congrats to Hix. While he didn't play yesterday, he was still part of that team and will collect a ring along with the others.
  9. Let's stick with Dr. P because my post was in no way about osu. I think Dr. P is a great planner in that he is good at getting things built. If The Big Dialer is any indication, he is horrible at getting things built and THEN following through. His hiring of TW was not good as TW hired Coach I. Secondly, it doesn't matter what he allows Tressel to go near. This isn't about Tressel directly. It is about the NCAA getting a hard on for Akron because they hired a guy to raise money for an Athletic Deparment that has been thrown out of college athletics. That's a fact and nothting to do with hating osu, etc. Tressel being a distraction has nothing to do with OSU and everything to do with everywhere the guy goes everything becomes about him and not the institution. Here we go again....
  10. I wanted to bump this back to the top because it is a good post. One thing the hiring of Tressel has done is provide a distraction from the positive move of hiring TB. Did I say distractions? Distractions...distractions...distractions. Tressel coming to campus puts the Athletic Department in the NCAA's spotlight. Basically, the NCAA threw Tressel out of college athletics with the five year show cause penalty and now we let him back in approximately four months later to help raise money for our Athletic Department knowing he was thrown out of college athletics. Don't think the NCAA won't be watching closely. Don't think they won't be looking for a reason to screw us over if they can. I can't believe there are too many people working at the NCAA who aren't at least a little pissed off at Akron about this. Not the best position you want to put the Department in. Tressel has a way of making everything around him about him. HE is the distraction in a time when the football program badly needs to recover from TW's horrible decision to hire Coach I. Some on this board keep saying, "Everyone cheats". OK then...Why do we want to give the NCAA a reason to start looking around? The more they look around, the more they find. Is that a good position for us to be in? Do our student athletes and coaches need that kind of attention? Do we want reported in the local media that the NCAA is sniffing around even if there is noting wrong going on?...Remember how bad things got when Reno sent a text or whatever he did? The nice thing about being a MAC school is the NCAA doesn't come looking around because it is largely an irrelevancy, and that is good for the schools because they can't afford to hire the people to fend off an NCAA investigation. In my opinion, this act of desperation was very short sighted by Dr. Proenza. Getting back to ZipsWin!'s post....It is 90% idiotic and 10% genius. We had better hope the NCAA isn't part of the idiotic part or, TB and his staff are screwed before they even get started.
  11. I don't think that is the problem. We only have a 5,500 seat arena. Surely we should be able to fill it on a weekend night. I don't even blame marketing at this point. Not sure what people are doing that would be more entertaining than watching this team play.
  12. While their FT% is going down, they seem to be on the upswing in total points the past 6 games after a small slump. At the end of the day, it is about scoring more points than the other team.
  13. For the life of me, I don't know why our Saturday games don't sell out with the quality team we have. What are people in Akron and the surrounding area doing on a Saturday night in early February?
  14. I thought it was the heartburn he was having? Or, he looked around and thought, "I haven't done a good job of bringing in good players and I need to get out." If he brought in better players, he wouldn't have been so concerned with what goes on in the SEC. If Tim Tebow could have been able to play for him for ten years at Florida, he would still be there. He is excellent at picking schools with a good QB, going there and winning right away. I'm not sure he has a Chris Leak or Tebow or Smith at OSU. When the stud QB goes away, his greatness goes away. His saving grace at OSU will be how terrible the conference is and the lack of meaningful competition each week.
  15. I have no issue with his hire. All I said was I give Tressel's time at Akron being around 12-18 months...closer to 12. 10 months from now, coaches will begin to be fired and his name will come up in conversations.
  16. I don't care what he married into. People always want more. What is the max retirement benefit in Ohio and how is it reached?
  17. Best post on this topic. 18 months on the high end.
  18. Goes directly to motivation. He has between 25 and 30 years in the Ohio retirement system. 30 is the magic number. I count he has around 28 right now. I don't know exactly how it works, but a retired person gets a certain payout based on the average of their highest earning years. Let's say if he makes it to 30 he gets 75% of $1 million during his retired years. Pretty good income for doing nothing.
  19. How many years does Tressel have in the Ohio Public Employees retirement program?
  20. I'll get to my point in a second. First of all, I like the article because it is asking the Zips to be better than they currently are....and they are pretty freaking good right now. My point about DiG's point, which I would like to make the point that I agree with his point but let's get to the point, isn't something I've said. Just like I quote Bill Cowher as saying, "The most dangerous team is a team with confidence and momentum", I'll quite another Cowherism. "You don't bring in chemistry. You develop chemistry." The Steelers have a franchise built around the draft and developing young players into the Steelers way of doing business. They play out their first contract and for the most part they go away and another player is waiting in the wings. KD didn't originally recruit some of these guys so habits based on past college experiences come along with them. That is a tough nut to crack if there is a problem. Dave is right, it is up to the coach to develop the chemistry of the team. It's an interesting article, but the chemistry issue is not one I'm concerned about. Diggs has a problem because he tells players on the other team, who suck, that they suck? We should all be so honest in our daily lives. Diggs doing this isn't a problem unless it hurts the team and it doesn't seem to be doing that. We have the best team in the MAC and wel will be in the NCAA Tournament again.
  21. We are already getting national attention. Below is part of the first sentence in the USA Today article about this issue. Is this really what we are looking for? "Jim Tressel, forced to resign as coach in disgrace last May amid a cash-for-tattoos scandal at Ohio State that toppled the football powerhouse" This is what the rest of the country thinks about our hire when they think of him. So, a few things could be going on. One could be, everyone in Ohio is stupid and can't see what the rest of the world does.. A second could be, everyone in Ohio has figured it out and this will be a bad hire because he is yesterdays news already. Third could be Tressel is coming here for a one to two years until he finds something he really wants to do and makes him the income he is used to making. Everyday Should Be Saturday had its own spin on the situation. Sort of makes us look pathetic. My opinion is we are paying Tressel $200K for the use of his name for as long as we can keep him. Others will do most of the hard lifting for him in terms of setting up his schedule with donors and then just have him sit at lunches and dinners telling football stories. I don't believe he will find that life challenging enough to keep him around. In the end, we won't look pathetic, but we will look desperate.
  22. I put in between 1-2 years. I don't see this job keeping his interest for long. Basically, we are paying him $200,000 per year for the use of his name and not really what he can do.
  23. This may or may not be a good hire. We don't know yet. I think we live in a society where people have very short memories. How do we even know if he will be working for UofA next year at this time? How do we know this just isn't a place to stop for a few months while he finds something else? I remain very skeptical. Yet, open minded about the whole thing. $200,000 isn't much money for a person who was used to making much, much more. I don't see this as a long term gig for the guy.
  24. I'm with you Dr Z. All things Tressel usually smell funny to me. As long as this thread is now, I have yet to see anyone make a compelling argument as to why hiring Tressel in this capacity is a good idea.
  25. If by "search" WKRK means falling flat on their faces trying to hire one guy and then having another guy come knocking, I guess it was a "search".
