  1. I think a lot of people noticed him which is why he won awards. There is a bid difference between getting noticed and hired. Not too many black coaches were getting hired when Winters was on the job market after the Owens era. The color of a coaches skin matters because it matter to older donors who grew up in a different time. Things are different now, but nine years ago they weren't like they are now.
  2. I'm not kidding when I say this. I could study the Temple playbook for a week and put up 41 on our defense.
  3. Article Good article. RC is a pretty good writer and sums up BCS college football in the tri-state area these days very well. Kind of the way I feel about college football in 2011. I'm sick of hearing about ncaa rule violations, child rape, stupid coaches and even more stupid ADs making stupid decisions. We don't need to rehash the problems with the Zips right now that makes it even worse. I really didn't enjoy college football this season with the exception of some of the games I attended. I know we are getting into the bowls and the season isn't over yet, but I'm hoping for a differnt off season and a better 2012. Here's to a better 2012.
  4. We need a head coach, not a QB coach.
  5. If this was the Zips, I would want them to be 91-0 in the same number of games, but that's not within reality. Given the situation Paul took over, it seems about right. If Paul does get the job, I would like him to have a quick turnaround. In four years, I don't want our best win total to be 4 or 5 games. I would expect 4-5 wins, if not more, his second season. Everyone else in the MAC does it...Why not us?
  6. He also brought in a future NFL offensive lineman. Transfers helped JD a great deal at the beginning. The risk worked. The next Akron coach will have to take some risks with transfers. Maybe not next year, but the year after, we need to win 4-5 games. 11 loss seasons are killing this program in terms of recruiting and a quick turnarond is in order. I don't see how, with the current talent level, we can do it without transfers.
  7. He always struck me as the type of guy who would say just about anything someone wanted to hear. Actually, they all kind of strike me in that manner.
  8. If a lot of people being upset is around 5-10, then I guess there are a lot upset. "Biddle called for an “Occupy CCU” rally Friday morning in support of Bennett that was advertised on a Facebook page the previous couple days. He was joined briefly by his wife and daughter for the start of the rally at 8:30 a.m. and later by a couple of friends as the gathering remained small across the street from the Wall College of Business." I know people who donate and attend CCU games. Bennett is well like personally...I'd even say extremely well liked. Spends a lot of time playing golf with the people I know. Great guy. However, this is a financial matter as a result of being .500 in the league the last few years and attendance dropping rapidly. CCU is in the same position as UofA in that they have spent a lot of money upgrading their stadium and all of the other insanity that goes along with that today in college athletics, and they are not seeing the financial returns they had hoped for. The people I know would probably agree with his being relieved of his position. They are people who own their own businesses and understand what money means and college athletics is a business. CCU can't make their decision based upon the opinion of one former player. It looks as if Hunter spent a lot of time reviewing the program and made a business decision. The two most important data points, money and winning, pointed to a declining program and the need for a change. This is what a good AD is supposed to do. Well done Hunter.
  9. The only similarity between Solich and Mason is they both could be AARP members. Mason never finished higher than fourth in the Big Ten. Solich never finished lower than fourth in his conference at Nebraska. Solich has coached in a national championship game. Mason may have seen one in person. Mason would make a splash; however, he is too old to climb up the diving-board ladder. I have no idea how his name come up at Akron all the time. Actually, I'm surprised it took this long for someone to bring it up. There is not a more unimpressive guy, who gets mentioned for jobs, than Mason.
  10. Zach, You need to go rub one out and take a nap before you have a stroke.
  11. Our esteemed colleague from Green has just proposed the end of ZN.o. I'm still waiting for my prediction that the Zips football would win a game in 2011 because it is impossible to lose every game in the MAC to come true.
  12. Well, from what I hear that's a good 5-minutes longer than Zipmeister lasts. That's what she said.
  13. If George Costanza can coin the phrase "Pardon my French", The Great GP1 can coin the phrase "The Graveyard of Coaches". I have to go powerwash my deck now so I can stain it tomorrow. Thank you and have a nice day.
  14. A starting QB leaving a brown stain in his pants the first half didn't help. Mount doesn't seem to have the talent level they have had in the past. I'd even go as far as to say they don't like playing in close games. Maybe that isn't all correct....They may not be used to playing in close games and struggle recently in one against an equal team.
  15. After reading your post, I can respond with a clear....No. Thanks for your ongoing obsession with what I write.
  16. Looked to me like only slightly more people go to the DIII Championship Game as go to The Big Dialer for a Zips game.
  17. I don't know if anyone has seen the series or read the books "Game of Thrones", but the characters from the north are always saying, "Winter is coming." I think about this when I think about PW, "Winters is coming". Sort of like the idea and play on words...maybe they can do something with it, but not many would get it....don't bother, but I still like the idea.
  18. I coined the phrase, "The Graveyard of Coaches" a couple of years ago. Not exactly true today, but it was then. Dennison never sniffed even a 1AA job....Faust, enough said....Ownes, Ashland. It deserved the phrase. Howevere, Brookhart and now Coach I are in D-1A programs. No longer the graveyard in my mind, but still not the best of career choices. http://buckeyefansonly.com/woody/ See paragraph 5. I did not think you were that old. But if you say you coined the phase...who am I to say you are fibbing. I'm missing something... oops paragraph 7 I'm really trying to be patient with you Doug. Your writing style is bad enough to make me not want read your posts. Now, a counting problem really has me questioning why I don't employ the Ignore button for the first time.
  19. You didn't like JD. Waddell was on the team that hired JD. We might be in exactly the same position we are in now. Hunter should be the AD right now. I guess if good marketing in the minors is taking cheap shots at a larger school, then this is a good billboard. The cheap shots strike me as childish to be honest. Never cloud a positive message with childish behavior. Many remember Waddell as the "Master of Billboards". I remember him as the guy who got in a pissing match with another University employee on this board, on his way out the door, using one of his various names....childish.
  20. This is why there should never be a large playoff in D-1A. It's the same teams in the playoffs every year and the same teams tend to go deep in the playoffs every year because they have a recruiting advantage over the other teams in their conferences. There are ways to smooth out the differences, but the folks at the ncaa aren't smart enough to figure it out. The BCS is working just fine. If they want to expand it, a plus one would work, but we all know how everyone in the ncaa likes to "grow" things and it would be a 16 team playoff within 10 years.
  21. Exactly. It is easy to win at OSU. One 1AA school, two MAC schools should equal three wins. They have five teams in the Big Ten that are terrible and they should have a 95% chance of winning with Faust coaching them. They have two other teams they should have an 80% chance of winning against. Two other games are up in the air. Under normal circumstances (last season was not normal), OSU should lose no more than three games. It is hard as Hell to win at Akron. There is nobody lower than the MAC so he would have to play two bcs teams, one 1AA team and a nonBCS team. Starting the season every year with 3-4 loses is terrible for any program, let alone one with a tradition of failure.
  22. How did he look lost? The suspensions didn't hurt Luke, Pryor going to the NFL did. Pryor makes OSU three games better last year. This is a good chance to move the conversation to the Zips. If the next coach does not get a QB who can be successful in his offense, we will see more of the same from the Zips.
  23. The funeral home of coaches? I don't know if their careers are dead or not. Coaching at Akron can be like people moving to Florida. Not dead, but close. They don't call Florida "God's Waiting Room" for nothing.
