  1. I do dream of something bigger for the University. I think there are a lot of guys we could go after who could get us there and I don't understand why everyone thinks the Tressel/OSU shortcut is the only way to be successful. We need to look at various possibilities and find the right person. This jumping on the USS Tressel doesn't smell right to me and I think it might be bad for him and us in the long run. I don't want a coach that takes shortcuts either. Please describe these "shortcuts" in detail. Great question. It doesn't take much detail. The same logic as the old "build facilities and we will be good" applies. We can't just assume that hiring Tressel will make us good. It takes a lot more than that to be good. I dont' doubt that Tressel is a good coach. It's easy to be at least good at OSU. Tressel was good, Cooper was at least good, Bruce was at least good. Look at the place and all they have going for them. Little of that exists at Akron. I'm not even certain Tressel will have the hunger to do what it takes to be good at Akron. Coaching "for the love of the game" doesn't do it for me. There has to be more at Akron. You said great question and then never answered it. LOL What shortcuts did he take? Try better reading comprehension. It's about UofA taking shortcuts, not Tressel/OSU taking shortcuts. LOL
  2. I think DrZ would disagree. I also think JZ84 might disagree. I also think Zips Win! might disagree.

Sorry, I didn't answer your original question. Here is why his suspension is a problem even if it is for half a season. Headline 1..."Akron Hires Tressel". Headline 2 (one week after headline 1)..."NCAA Suspension Cloud Over Tressel". Headline 3 (one week after Headline 2)...."NCAA Still Undecided on Tressel's Fate". Headline 4 (one week after Headline 3)...."NCAA Suspends Tressel Six Games"....OR...."NCAA Suspends Tressel Full Season". Headline 5 (one week before season)..."Tresselless Zips Take Field Against BCS Team X". Headlines 6-10...same as Headline 5 with minor changes. Headline 11...assuming he only gets six games...."Zips Try to Right Ship After 0-6 Start or 1-5 Start" Am I really being negative when I write this stuff, or is there so much potential negativity to step in it makes the writing easy? There is a lot of really short term negativity to hiring Tressel that could lead to more of the same for Zips football. If Tressel gets suspended for an entire season, what would the coaching staff look like? Who would be the head coach? Basically, hiring Tressel would allow him to name the head coach for potentially an entire season....Do we really want that? How much are we willing to pay Tressel to do nothing when we are already paying another coach to do nothing?
  5. You said you wanted a place to take it easy and still make an impact on kids lives. Akron is that kind of place. You want to make good on your name and legacy and you are about teaching football. Well Akron desperately needs to be taught how to play football. I'm not interested in a guy looking to take it easy. His easy job was OSU. It's hard as Hell to win at Akron and we don't need a guy to take it easy. We want a guy who will work his butt off to get the easy job at a school like OSU.
  6. Dave, You are a former HR Big Wig. See my question above. I think you are right. It's one thing to meet with someone and interview them. It's another to be able to come to an agreement on terms. If they did interview Tressel, that is a good thing. Interviews are a good way of learning from other people whether or not you hire them. It's not that Tressel wouldn't make a good coach. The question is, given all of the circumstances involved with us and his ncaa problems, is there a fit that would make both parties look good in the process and be mutually beneficial? I don't think there is. This isn't a good fit for either party.
  7. Below is an exercise that will help the pro-Tressel fans come to some sort of realization about the possibility of him becoming coach. Every coach signs a contract. Assume you are a UofA lawyer and you have to write a contract to sign Tressel. The NCAA is going to come down on him harder than they do OSU so assume he is not going to coach some games for maybe as much as an entire season. Write the contract so it protects UofA and then tell everyone why Tressel would sign it. Bonus Question: On a scale from 1-10.... How stupid would the people at UofA look if they signed Tressel to a contract and he was suspended by the ncaa for an entire season or even a half a season?
  8. Just hang in there. I'm sure we are going to see a lot more "logic" on this board in the next couple of weeks.
  9. I just heard through a secret source that part of Tressel's contract with UofA will allow him to pilot the Goodyear Blimp full of donors around Akron twice a week.

    Over/Under

What if he takes the job and can't coach next year?
  11. How dare you be such a negative poster!!!! I always saw myself as more of a leader of rebels against corrupt law enforcement in a Third World country. Not a corrupt CEO involved with Tressel's YSU football program. I guess Buckzip can be our Mickey Monus.
  12. Let's predict the over/under on the date the new coach will be picked. I'm going to set the date at Dec. 15. Pick over or under and why. I'm going to pick under, but I'm not confident about my bet. I thnik they are going to take their time and do a better job of making a decision.
  13. There is going to be a search committee, which makes me happy. "Fire quickly, hire slowly" is one of my favorite business sayings. I think they take their time and try to find a good coach.
  14. He knows the MAC and has won in the MAC. The experience at Kansas only helps him. I would certainly consider him. So would I. He won at Buffalo. Enough said. Turner Gill failed to win at Kansas. Enough said. He won at Buffalo. There are legions of coaches who fail at basketball schools and Gill is one of them.
  15. Tonight of all nights gives me an especially unique view of this situation.
  16. He knows the MAC and has won in the MAC. The experience at Kansas only helps him. I would certainly consider him. So would I.
  17. Take it to the bank...Tressel will not be the coach. The contract the Zips would force him to sign would never be acceptable to him or his lawyers.
  18. Great post JZ84. I'd just like to focus on this little bit. We have learned in the past year that Tressel was a fake and fraud as it relates to his campaign to be the most honorable person in America. He can't afford to come to Akron and be exposed as a fake and fraud as a coach. He'll never take the chance. Tressel won a boatload of games at OSU with three MAC schools per year and a cake Big Ten schedule. He routinely got his butt kicked against OOC BCS teams. There is no scheduling to hide behind at Akron. He can't take the risk of being exposed. One thing Tressel isn't is a risk taker and Akron is a huge risk for him. I've never said that Tressel couldn't win at Akron. There just isn't any evidence to show he can win without breaking NCAA rules. I don't want to risk him not being able to win without breaking rules at Akron. If he doesn't break rules and loses, we are screwed. If he breaks rules, wins and gets caught, we are screwed. If he doesn't break rules and wins, which there is no proof of, we win. We have a 2 in 3 chance of losing with this guy. No thanks. People need to think with their heads and not with their hearts.
  19. Completely false. When the recruits are told they are going to Akron and not tosu, after one year it will be back to business (recruiting) as usual. I agree with Zips Win! People have short memories...especially young people. Lots of no name coaches have done well in the MAC and have done a great job of recruiting. Toledo Tom was a great MAC coach and spent almost his entire career at Toledo. He did just fine without the OSU name behind him. Solich is doing just fine without the OSU name behind him. Hoepner (sp?) did great at Miami without the OSU name behind him. English is doing fine at EMU without the OSU name behind. Cubit has done fine at WMU without the OSU name behind him. The previous coach at Miamioh won the MAC in two years and didn't have the OSU name behind him. This illusion that Tressel will come to Akron and win off of his past is fantasy. If Tressel came to Akron, his ability to win or lose will depend on how well he does at Akron, not how well he did at OSU. If OSU gets back to being a top level Big Ten team next year, everyone around Ohio will be saying, "Jim who?".
  20. How many goosebumps will you have if we lose to two bcs teams next year and our ooc foe, in say the first three weeks of the season next year? Short term, Faust sold tickets for UofA. Short term, Tressel will sell tickets. Long term? How fast will people turn on Tressel if the team goes 3-9 next year? Gerry Faust isn't even in the same league as Jim Tressel as a coach. Faust Notre Dame: 30-26-1 Akron: 73-79-4 Career: 103-105-5 Tressel Youngstown State: 135-57-2 Ohio State: 229-79-2 Career: 364-136-4; 4 NCAA 1-AA National Championships, 1 NCAA 1-A National Championship Tressel isn't just a big name...he's one of the best coaches and recruiters in the country. It was a comment about the fans of NE Ohio, not coaching ability.

  22. Football recruits to sit around and nurse hangovers.
  23. Because he wasn't ready to be the AD at a D-1A school. After getting more experience at UC, three other schools agreed when he didn't get offers at those schools. The people at UofA did the right thing.
  24. Well said. Below are some simple questions about Tressel everyone should ask. 1. Does Tressel win? Yes 2. Does Tressel recruit well? Yes 3. Is Tressel well liked by high school coaches? Yes 4. Will he fill the stadium? If he wins, yes. If he doesn't, Faust Part II. 5. Is he a good coach? Yes 6. Does he use lying and cheating to accomplish success in questions 1, 2, 3 and 5? Yes My biggest question is now and will always be until the question gets answered, Can he win without lying and cheating? There isn't much evidence he can because it has always gone on. He'll probably do just fine at Akron, but I don't have much certainty. Paul Winters has won at a place where lying and cheating just isn't possible because nobody knows who the players are and almost nobody cares about the program. Good football players in Youngstown are minor celebritites, especially when they are on a roll so there is room for cheating. Good football players at OSU are celebrities and future NFL players. There are so many jock sniffers arond Columbus, rules ARE going to be broken. It's easy to win at OSU. It's hard as Hell to win at Wayne State and PW has done it. Give me the underdog for an underdog program.
  25. Golly, something tells me all of this discussion about Tressel coaching at Akron is all hooey.
