Allow me to add some intelligence to this thread.Style of play is absolutely the key right now. If you can get your QB to make some plays with his feet and complete some passes down field, you can win. Like I have said before, football has become about QBs, WRs and coaches.Case in point. The Rose Bowl. I hate to use tOSU as the example because everyone here goes crazy, but it was the best example of bowl season. I'm not ready to say that Pryor is a great QB, but he did play extremely well for once. tOSU did not win because they lined up in the I-formation and ran the ball down the throat of a smaller Oregon defense. The opposite actually took place. When tOSU lined up in the I-formation, they were stuffed by a smaller defense. The I-formation for almost every team is a pending disaster. You need Alabama type talent to make it work and neither team in the Rose Bowl has Alabama type talent. We also can't say that the overrated tOSU defense outclassed a smaller Oregon defense. The opposite actually took place. Late in the third quarter, Oregon was running the ball down the throat of tOSU's defense. If the Oregon QB doesn't hand the ball off into the throat of Blount and Blount kicks the ball into the endzone in a freak accident, Oregon has the lead in the fourth quarter and I don't see Pryor bringing tOSU back. Oregon's starting running back got hurt and prior to that he was running circles around a slow tOSU defense by getting to the edge at will.tOSU won because Pryor had the ability to make plays out of the SPREAD FORMATION with his feet and the tOSU coaches also found some mismatches to exploit in the passing game. tOSU ran the ball well out of the spread and not the I-formation. Smashmouth football did not win the day for tOSU. Defense did not win the day either. A combination of good playcalling and an Oregon give-a-way won it for tOSU.Let's bring this around to the Zips since this is a Zips board. I think the Zips could have the best passing QB in Ohio college football next year. He has the arm, he just needs to improve accuracy. He has some mobility.....or at least enough mobility to be successful. Do we now have a coaching staff that can recognize and exploit mismatches? Do we have anyone to throw the ball downfield to? We'll find out those answers next year.

I can't think of one elite NFL QB under 32 that didn't play in either a spread offense or at least one geared toward passing. Brees was from Purdue, but he grew up in Texas and Purdue runs a spread style offense. Roethlisberger ran a spread type offense at Miami. Tennessee was almost completely dependent upon Manning's arm. Brady went to Michigan but was a California kid who understood how to pass and wasn't very good in their offense at UM. Palmer won the Heisman because of his arm, not USC's defense and running game. Rivers is from NC and went to NC State where they threw constantly.Alabama is absolutely loaded with talent and it makes more traditional offenses easier to run. The spread is a good offense with only a couple of good players and lesser talent. WVU under Rodrigues had Slaton, White and Henry and that was about it. That's why they HAD to run the spread.The NFL game today is much different that even 10 years ago. Trent Dilfer is the best commentator on today's NFL and he always says the league is about QBs, WRs and coaches. Is it coincidence that the elite QBs are also the ones in the playoffs this season? Favre is not under 32, but he is an elite NFL qb. The rules in the NFL are geared toward passing....you can't touch a receiver after five yards (this penalty results in automatic first down)....if you breath on one while the ball is in the air or you get a penalty...any shot to the QBs head is a 15 year penalty...if you tackle the QB too low you get a penalty...the list could go on. Smash mouth football teams don't win the big games in the NFL anymore. The Steelers lost AFC Championship one after another until Cowher realized he needed to turn the ball over to his QB. Minnesota will not even go to the Super Bowl because they are a smash mouth team. Cincy will not win one playoff game because their coach will go Cowher and run the ball too much in the playoffs. San Diego is better because their QB is more productive and Tomlinson is less productive.Since this is a Zips board, I'll bring it all around. If the Zips ignore the fact that they have a QB with an NFL arm and start running the ball too much, they will continue to lose. The Zips badly need to find two good wide receivers for next year for Nicely to throw to. With improvements in his accuracy, I believe Nicely can be the winner we have been looking for. All they need to do on defense is show some level of ability and they should be able to win.I hope going into next year, all of you on this board make a resolution to stop thinking about college football as if it is the 1950s. It will greatly help the Great GP1 utilize his time in educating you guys and bringing our fan base into the 21st Century. I'm going to go get drunk now and I don't plan on posting tomorrow. It's not about building the program, it's about improving the program. Everything is built and now they need improvement in the form of winning. There is sufficient talent on the team that they do not need a five year "building"/circle jerk program. If we go into "building", in five years we will be exactly where we are now.The original post is correct. Recruit good players regardless of where they come from.I agree with Z.I.P. in that I don't understand the bias against JC players. It is really an eastern bias. Schools out west take JC players all the time. In fact, schools like USC and UCLA are difficult to get into for any student and many take a two year trip to a JC to get their grades up in order to get in those schools. I'd rather take a chance on a JC player who proved his ability for two years in the classroom rather than a freshman at risk student.

I've worked as a high level sales manager for a couple of Fortune 100 companies. Did extremely well with promotions at both. Maybe your sales pitch needs some work. Tell me your selling points and I will help you improve your closing skills. Believe me, these gym teachers that coach college basketball are no match for me. We'll have one Top 25 team after another in the JAR next year.

I really thought this was going to be the game.When we look back, will we see a better single player performance in any bowl game in 2009 better than #7 at BGSU. He had something like 15 catches for 215 yards. Simply a fantistic performance. Absolutely fantistic performance #7...great job.

I could also throw out that an airplane manufacturer is moving 3,800 jobs from Washington to Charleston, SC which will create a total of around 23,000 jobs in that area alone to support the one industry, but the Great GP1 thinks bigger than that.In reality, I think Ohio is a great place and if someone wants to live there I don't think that makes that person stupid. It has nothing to do with me leaving and everything to do with the vast numbers of people that have left. That's where the demographics come into play. There aren't fewer good football players in Ohio because parents are stupid because they want to live there. That's a silly argument that I actually have never made here. There are fewer good football players in Ohio because there are fewer people. There are increasingly more good players in the south because there are increasingly more people in the south.

Exceptions to the rule and not the rule. They are good teams though.I'd also like to see either of those teams have the success they have had playing in one of the big three conferences. I don't think undefeated seasons would be in order for them.

^^This is a very moot factor at best.What we take for granted or simply do not know is that in the southern states, their Track Seasons start far earlier than up North. Also, State rules are more strict in the north regarding Track & Field than in the south. If you think this has no impact, just check the state records for sprints in northern states vs. the south. It affects the overall speed and muscle-conditioning which may give a slight, but certain advantage to conferences like the SEC.Compounded by the fact that the BigTen's 'game' hasn't evolved as fast as other conferences.It's just like the Auto Industry - The domestics didn't evolve until they were the laughing stock and they lost market-share. They currently - realistically make some of the best cars (i.e. Ford & GM, not Chrysler), but still are perceived as inferior.The Midwest still has some of the best athletes, but we're still behind in evolving our game to match the new benchmarks (i.e. SEC, Big 12 South). This doesn't mean we can't compete. Let's face it, Alabama plays 'Big 10' football and smashed Florida which plays purely 'SEC' football.So it's not like it can't be done.It's all about scheme and strategy. I understand that at one point he considered naming it Obama Stadium, but the architects concluded that the stadium would end up tilted so far to the left that everyone would fall out of their seats. Good point. I had heard they were going to name it Republican Party Stadium in honor of a lot of the fundraising InfoCision does, but then they realized the stadium would still lean to the left. EA is right, but his reasoning is wrong. The reason UofA needs to play a better schedule is to bring in more money. I could really care less about SOS or RPI, to me all of that stuff is BS. What I am extremely concerned about are the small crowds that show up at the JAR to see them play Malone AND St. Francis, or whatever pile of crap they scheduled. One of those games a year is enough.EA is correct about one thing. UofA should be the odds on favorite to win the MAC this year. It has become a very good program. 25 wins with their schedule should not be an unreasonable expectation. They are good enough that we can stop holding the program's hand through the "building process" they have gone through and treat them like big boys now. I think they can perform well in ATM games and they should start to play them. Screw all the rankings.

I'm not scared of what the other teams have or how the Zips might perform. It has nothing to do with performance and everything to do with generating revenue for the Athletic Department.

There is no advantage to Zips for playing games at the Q, except for the MAC tournament. I'm fine with that. Then what we need to do is schedule 2-3 ATM games a year and not worry about the home-home.

The process has been gradual over the years, but I can remember a time in my life when watching an NFL game was a fun event for me.
