Nice report CK. My wife and I were parked near the Hixson's as well, but we did not stick around for the tailgate. There was a bar near by called The Boro that had all of the day's games on it so we went there.
I think we have the same opinion of the game. It was a nice win, but not that nice. In fact, one could say that the offense played better against Purdue than they did against MTSU. The defense played lights out though. At a minimum, the score should have been 26-7.
My biggest concern of the game was the lack of discipline when the offense moved at least into field goal range. Too many penalties moved them out of FG range and forced punts. Also, the execution of the offense broke down inside the 30 and the team was forced out of FG range.
I also think you are right about Getsy forcing too much of the action. I like a QB to take a risk, but I would rather him not in a close game. Maybe he figured they had a ten point lead, MTSU couldn't move the ball and he figured "why not?" because he did not take the same type of risks against Purdue. There was one play in particular that impressed me the most about Getsy. The Zips had the ball on the right hash mark moving toward the stage set up in the one end zone. Getsy threw a 20 yard out to the opposite side line and the ball was completed on a rope. It was at least as good as the guys on Sunday throw. I don't think Getsy is an NFL player, but on that one play, he sure looked like one.
I say a lot of good things about Biggs, and to say anything else would just repeat what I have said in the past. The guy has been the spark that has supported the teams winning for the past two seasons. Enough said.
The most important thing the Zips did this game was control the ball. Akron had the ball most of the first half and even though the score was close at half, MTSU's defense was tired already. It was only a matter of time until the Zips scored on them again. The running game really took off in the second half because of a tired MTSU defense. JD manages this team similar to how an NFL coach would manage a team. Get a lead, control the ball and run the clock out with a strong running game against a tired defense.
I loved the first TD play call and it certainly fooled me. One of my favorite plays is the QB draw close to the end zone, but I would not run it with Getsy because he is too slow. When he took the snap and faked the QB draw, I could feel my face get red with anger
, but when he pulled up and threw the pass to Biggs, it was all good
. JD always seems to have a good wrinkle around the goal line early in the game.
As a quick history lesson for the northeast Ohio fans of the Browns, the QB draw was invented by Paul Brown when Otto Graham (sp?) played for him. As you may well know, Brown was one of the great innovators of the game. Otto was considered a great running QB at the time he played. Brown invented the play to be run between the 5-15 yard line to take advantage of a strong rush by the defense. When you watch games and they run the play outside of the zone Brown intended it to be run it almost always fails. That is because most coaches today don't understand the history of the game or how plays were initially conceptualized.
Anyhow, my wife and I made a mini-vacation out of this trip and had a real nice time in Nashville and then at MTSU. Thanks to everyone in Tennessee for being so welcoming.
-
Thank you. And thanks to all of the folks in the Boro for being so welcoming. It was nice to see after last week's rude fans at Purdue.
-
Is there anyone out there who is going to Tennessee this week and would like me to post on things to do in Nashville? I am not going to waste time doing this if nobody is interested.

A loss is a loss, is a loss, is a loss.....
With ball ammunition lock and load.
I think I have found my replacement for the most bitter poster on this page  . I pass the torch to you zip37

Anyway, Saturday's performance was fantastic.....
Losing 49-24 means you are fantastic?
I understand Akron looked good at times but, come on, when you lose by more than 2 TD's, the team did not play "fantastic."
I think he was talking about Getsy.

Does anyone have a breakdown on Biggs' yards per carry?
Biggs 11 for 47 yrds, 4.3 per carry
Kennedy 4 for 13 yrds, 3.2 per carry
Akron team rushing 21 for 25 yards (Getsy minus 25)
Glad to see Akron play with Purdue, made it fun to listen to.
I think we are in for an entertaining season. I'm also glad to hear
Getsy play well, I was a little concerned after watching Blue/Gold game.
Sorry DrZ, I modified my post while you were looking up the numbers.

Getsy looks like and carries himself like a player who played at a big time program.
That's impressive, considering his previous experience was either high school, or Pitt. Since Pitt lost to lowly OU...and could only muster 10 points in a game that went to overtime...I have a hard time classifying Pitt as "big time." They'd be lucky to win 6 games with a MAC schedule this year.
I'm very happy we got Getsy instead of Palko.
When Getsy was at Pitt, they were a big time program and then the decided to hire a bumb to coach their team who loses every place he coaches. As good as Palko was last year, he is that bad this year. The winning last year was squarely on his shoulders and the losing this year is squarely on his shoulders as well.
Yesterday I was at the Steelers game with some friends from Pittsburgh and to a man they all said we are lucky to have Getsy and he should be the starter at Pitt this season.

We also had a good day rushing the ball with plenty of room for the RBs to work.
Biggs had 47 yards rushing, Kennedy had 13...can you elaborate on "good day rushing the ball" and "plenty of room for the RB's to work"?
I'd love to and thanks for the question.
Biggs averaged 4.3 yard per carry. That is a really good average. 4.3+4.3+4.3=12.9. That is a first down and you can win a lot of games with your running back gaining 4.3 yards per carry. 4.3 sets up second and six or five which allows the team to either run OR pass. Second and seven or more forces the team into passing on second down. The Zips had to abandon the run after the first half because they were far enough behind that they had to play catch up. The second half is a bit of a blur because of the sun stroke/hangover and all, but I don't remember Biggs even being in the game much after mid way through the third quarter. I have every confidence that when we are playing MAC competition, we will be able to utilize our running backs more. If you go onto www.gozips.com they have statistics from the game that make you wonder who is tracking that stuff.
I think if Getsy could run as fast as Frye used to run, we could get more yards running. Getsy scrambles forward into the pocket and attempts to find a receiver. The problem with scrambling forward and not running is that the pocket closes too fast. Frye could scramble to the sides and give himself morre time to find a receiver and more room to run if he needed to.
60 yards rushing is not that bad for a team on the losing end of a lopsided score. I think Biggs averaged around 85 yards per game last year, and we won when he played a lot. Given what he did Saturday with limited touches, 85 yards would not have been out of reach. I don't know how many people were at the game Saturday, but Purdue's overall team size was impressive (I was most impressed with the size of their two running backs). If our line looked decent against them, they will look even better against MAC teams.
Another issue I would like to mention is the solid production from the TE position. The coaches seem to be able to place the TE in positions that will make him a successful receiver, especially near the goal line. When given the chance, he did a good job of catching the ball and getting extra yards.

(Only you could find a way to belittle Frye......in a game he didn't play in....the only thing that came to an end when Frye graduated was his eligibility, not the world....)
I do it because he is an easy target. You also missed the slap at the Owens years later in the post.

I can't believe this message board after the game yesterday. I think the Zips played very well and we should all be looking forward to the remainder of the season. The rude Purdue fans did not have much to say to us leaving the stadium yesterday. I think we put a scare in them. Stop being so dull.
Let's start with the offense. After a rusty start, Getsy played very well. He had over 280 yards passing and no turnovers. Looking at the math, that would average to over 3,000 yards this season passing which would be more than 400 more than last season. All of you hand wringers who though the world was going to come to an end when Frye graduated can all calm down now. Getsy looks like and carries himself like a player who played at a big time program. The thing I like most about him is he is not scared to throw the ball down field. It makes for exciting plays. Still ten games to go though and if Getsy passes for over 3,000 yards, it means we are playing from behind a lot and that will not be good. The coach for Purdue said something along the lines of "their QB will win a lot of games for them this season". That will be nice for a change if it comes true.
As far as the offensive line, the guys played real well. There were some sacks, but most of those were coverage sacks. When Purdue would blitz, they were picked up. We also had a good day rushing the ball with plenty of room for the RBs to work. A couple of them went down with a couple of dings and their replacements did a good job when given the chance. Again, the OL hand wringers can stop that as well. I might even go out on a cliff here and say that the OL is better than last season.
Biggs played well and ran hard...not much a receiver though. He seems out of sorts when he is not handed the ball. I notice they use Kennedy on passing downs...probably not a bad idea.
The receivers did a good job of catching hard to catch passes when Getsy was shaking off the rust early on and more than any other group really sparked yesterday's good performance.
Moving to defense. The DL played very well yesterday. Early in the game they stopped Purdue on third and short to force a key punt. Kiki is a real bear and could start at a lot of Big Ten schools.
The DBs played well against some really tall and good Purdue players. 87 for Purdue had to be at least 6' 6" tall. Most importantly, the DBs were tackling much better than they did last season against big schools.
I like how hard we were hitting yesterday from both the offense and defense. I think we are seeing the personality of the coaching staff coming through the players. I have not seen a more physical or tough group of kids as these kids are at UA in a long time. If they play this physical throughout the season, UA is going to force a lot of turnovers which will help lead to wins. We also no longer see player who are hurt laying down on the ground waiting for the trainers. Most get up on one knee at least and try to get up on their own. That is sign of the toughness I am talking about. I doubt we would see coaches and players crying in the locker room or during post game interviews as we have seen in years past. These players are acting like men and I love every second of it.
As far as coaching, I don't know what else the staff could have done to make us more competitive yesterday. They came in with a game plan to win the game and the players did the best they could to execute it. The coaches also have the players well conditioned which will help us this week in the heat of Tennessee.
We played well against a very good team yesterday. I do not think Purdue is overrated...I think the Zips came to play and put on a good show. Purdue will win 9-10 games this season, if that is an overrated team, then I hope we can be overrated as well.
After seeing the MAC results from yesterday, I am even more convinced we are going to have a good season. Players come and go and we never know how the next generation of players are going to play, but it seems as if this group we have now is ready to play.
Not quite done yet. Last and certainly least are the guys who are almost football players. The punter punted well for us, but he needs to pick up the pace a little. The PK kicked well and I expect good things from him this season. That's enough of them.
-
The Zips just need to run their offense. If it leads to a 50-0 loss, then it does. If they win, then even better. There are 11 games to be played and the reality of college football is that for most teams, the first couple of games are warm up games for conference play. Only about 6 or 7 teams really have a shot at a national championship and after that people are playing for conference championships.
We need to make sure our offense is ready for that first game against NIU in a couple of weeks and then CMU after that. Losing to Purdue, Army or MTSU does not hurt your chances of playing in Detroit in December.
-
It's difficult to get to unless you live in the western part of Michigan. If you are coming from the Detroit area, take the Indiana turnpike until you get around South Bend and then look for roads to WLaf. Don't go to Gary and then head south.

Just when you thought they could not get any more stupid at the ABJ, here is a link to an article about Biggs. They list several MAC players as potential award winners and there is a running back from Marshall on the list. I wonder if they follow college football at the ABJ? Do they know Marshall is no longer in the MAC?

The gift for the Grid Iron Club is tax-deductable. Just as any gift donation to the University.
Are you sure? For a gift to be tax ded.., nothing can be received for the gift. In this case, the donor receives tickets, sideline passes, etc.
-
The Grid Iron Club is not new, but if I am going to give 2G to the school, I am going to give to the Foundation and designate it to football so I could get the tax deduction.

It's a ton more fun when you beliitle Charlie.
Hey guys! Writing from Utah today.
Not for me, it actually breaks my heart to say that we had our second best offensibe player in history, second to Mike Clark, and we didn't win anything.

Good point Rifle. This is typical of the press Akron gets around ne Ohio. They love to write about the Zips when things are going poorly because they can focus on some loser on the team and do a human interest story about some "local" kid playing at Akron. That's all crap. The worse thing that will happen to the media in ne Ohio is if the Zips are winning on a consistent basis. If that happens, the media will have to do actual reporting on the program and interviews with the other teams' coaches.
My guess is that Shaw has not walked on campus at UA for over ten years and has no idea about MAC football. I would be curious as to where he went to college.
That @$$hole Plute wrote almost the same article Shaw did Saturday. Interesting how things work......
There is one person who could really change the way the media covers Akron in the future. This person would have the ability to take a guy like Shaw aside and say, "Look Mr. Shaw, Akron is not a lost cause. You should go to some of the games and see how good MAC football is and what Akron is willing to do to turn things around". His name is Charlie Frye. Frye now has a good chance to be a champion of the school, conference and football program. From what I have seen, he has taken a good step forward doing the UA ad that has been running during Browns games. I hope he continues. I also hope he would take the time to get some of his former teammates involved in things like the Varsity A. We all know he is very busy, but a person like him could really help grow support from former players of all ages. The school desparately needs the former players, especially the players from the D1 years, to support the program more than they do.
If you are a former player reading this, you need to be in the Varsity A. It's only $60 for a three year membership and it helps supporth the school. You have an obligation to do this.

Also, fyi I saw that Butchie is the new QB coach at Ashland replacing Tom Stacey. Good luck to Butchie.
Great for Butchie!
The most exciting years of the Owens era were when Butchie was playing. They had a much better offensive line and receiver group. Not to mention the defense was much better then also. My favorite part of Butchie's game was his ability to throw long passes. He was the best long passer I have seen at Akron.
Former Zips coaching seems to be somewhat of a trend. Mike Johnson is still coaching Ron Mexico in Atlanta. Most of you probably will not remember Mike, but he was a very good qb and was the MVP of the World League (now NFL Europe) in San Antonio when they still had teams in the United States.

UAM,
Please bring back the car magnet with the kangaroo head. That is one of the best give away items ever. Buy 500 and sell them at 200% mark up. I bet you sell all of them.

Biggs adjustment and play last year - Best coaching move but did it take too long ? I remember a lot of people on the board on the Biggs bandwagon in early August.......ala Ferguson ? My point earlier -- Big difference, Ringer was not JD's guy.
I don't know if it took too long to replace Ringer because his faults were not fully realized until after the MTSU game. I think what really did Ringer in were the fumbles against MTSU. Turnovers will lose a game faster than anything and especally when you fumble near the other team's end zone. Not only that, Biggs completely out performed Ringer when he had the chance to play. I think he won MAC Offensive Player of the Week two or three times last year. That my friends is a difference maker.
I know there is a lot of paranoia everytime I mention Frye's name, so let me clarify my comments above. I think Frye had a VERY good season last year (though he had a much better one his junior year). As good as he played, the team still needed some spark to get them winning. That spark was Biggs. Biggs provided consistency (runs hard every play) and dependability (doesn't fumble) to the running attack. JD wants to run the ball, and when we ran more and passed less the team won games. I love to win!
-
There are way too many good comments to quote, so I'll just jump in again.
I don't know what the seniors did or did not do last year after a bad start, but if they provided leadership to the remainder of the team, that is what seniors are supposed to do. My only question would be, what took so long? Maybe they were sick of years of losing and pouting about a new staff. I really don't know. I would guess that getting passed Virginia, NIU and PSU helped the outlook of the team and prospects for victory as well as leadership. Any spark to the team had to be the loss to MTSU. I can't imagine how sick they all felt after that game losing to an inferior team at the Rubber Bowl.
Maybe beating Marshall was lucky. The bottom line is that the Zips were presented with opportunities to take advantage of and they did. That's the sign of a good team. The sign of a bad team is one that allows those opportunities to happen and we all see the condition of the Marshall program now. They are a mid level MAC program now going into a conference where those schools are going to want to kick their ass every week just to make a statement.
I would say something bad about Owens here, but I've said enough bad things about him in my life that I'm sure the good Lord will need me to answer a few questions about them before he makes his decision. With my luck, God will look like Terry Pluto. No wonder Pluto thinks he is God.
If Getsy is a gamer, the only way to find out is during a real game. Within a month we will all know. My biggest concern is his not playing in a game for a few years now. I'm not willing to make any changes right now though. If we are getting our asses kicked at Purdue at halftime in a couple of weeks, I would let Ferguson play some in the second half regardless of how Getsy plays. I think that would be a prudent thing to do.
Thanks for everyone for elevating this board today.
-
BUT, what if Ferguson is actually better, what if thru spring and camp drills he actually outperforms Getsy ? How long does JD stick with his chosen one ?
I know I'm rattling some homer cages here but JD's free pass just does not work for me. He rode the shoulders of Charlie last year to COY honors and an extremely lucky win over Marshall (Watch the tape guys, they gave the game to us, talk about bungling opportunities - it's why no bowls called and Marshall was chosen as the better team). Charlie's proving to be quite a talent in the higher ranks and may have done more himself alone then we realized leading to some wins, So will JD make the tough decisions ?
This was an excellent post and I would like to just comment on a couple of things.
First, I think JD has the personality to pull the plug on any player who is not performing. Most college coaches know the importance winning and playing the best players. I am sure JD understands this as he not only has coached in college for eight years, but in the NFL for two. When it comes right down to it, these coaches are a bunch of pricks who will do anything to save their @$$e$.
I don't think JD has had a free pass at all. I remember last year on this site after the first two or three games people were calling for his head. Also, the Beacon Journal has done nothing since he received the job but mention Saint Lee Owens in every article they write about him and how it was Owens' players who are carrying the load for him. He certainly has not had a free pass.
Let's all take a trip back to last year again. What made the team turn their season around last year was the benching of Ringer and the starting of Biggs after a horrible start to the season. It had nothing to do with the QB play. Just to satisfy Zips Win! I will say this, Frye obviously played very good last year. Saying that though his play was not the key to turning around the season. The point being, it was the guts JD had to bench an underperforming player and take a chance with one of his own guys. Maybe he is taking a chance with one of "his guys" this year, but the first chance he took with one worked out very well. If I see Ringer on anything this season other than kickoff team, I will
.
Guys, Z-Pouch has written the type of post that we should all be posting. There is nothing wrong with a little smack on this board...either serious or kidding. It is the stuff that make boards fun and popular.

In addition to downtown, you could stay in west Akron near Summit Mall. There is a Winking Lizard (sports bar) there that can get just about any game you want.
