  1. There is an post on GoZips.com today about a Varsity A reverse raffle. If there are any former varsity players reading this, go on to the web site and register for the Varsity "A" Association. A three year membership costs $60 and a one year $25.

For more reasons than I want to get into on this post, not many former varsity athletes associate with the school in the same way as other Division I schools. This has to change if the Zips are to become a big time program. Register for the reverse raffle and go to it. You can't be all that busy on a Monday night in May. Then go to the golf outings in the summer for your individual sports. I am confident you will have a good time and see some old friends.

I put this post on the football page because this seems to be the one that gets the most hits. If the administrators of this board think the post should be in another area or multiple areas, please feel free to move it.

  2. Unlike some of you, I was very impressed with the play of John Ferguson. I think you have to give him a chance in this QB battle. He's clearly a better QB than Arthur and Getsy was better but not all that much better.

I agree ITZ. Ferg did look good. However, he was playing against the third team defense with some of the starting OL being forced to play with the third team. The question is whether he can do it or not with the first team. As you know, things get much faster when playing with the starters.

  3. WOW, I thought the 5 excuse making machine would wait to get running until at least after draft day. I don't know if maybe it is never to late to get started or it just never ended.

Since I like this board and the people on it so much, I am currently developing a 5 excuse making cheat sheet that will greatly reduce the amount of time typing on this board. It will be numerically based with an excuse tied to each number so you can just type in the number instead of the whole phrase. I am attempting to gather all of the excuses used over the past two years to include so I am sure you all understand it is taking a lot of time. When completed, it will greatly reduce the amount of time each of you spend making excuses. Potentially, it could be the greatest post ever on this page.

Please, there is no need to thank me. I feel I have an obligation to help my fellow Zips fans.

    Keep posted.....

  4. • Charlie Frye (Akron)

    Vital statistics: 6-foot-3 7/8, 225 pounds, 4.76 in the 40.

Numbers game: Started in all but two of his 46 career appearances. Completed 913 of 1,436 passes for 11,049 yards, with 64 touchdown passes and 32 interceptions. Had 375 rushes for 429 yards and 19 touchdowns. Holds every school passing record and threw for 2,000-plus yards in all four seasons. Was All-Mid-America Conference twice, three times was his team's offensive player of the year, and twice was a captain.

Upside: Good size and stature, good enough arm strength, and has been productive every season as a four-year starter. Admirable work habits, a student of the game, knows what everyone's role on the field is supposed to be. A leader in the huddle. Nice accuracy and touch. Excellent vision, sees the field well, and usually makes good decisions. Pretty good delivery. Tough guy, durable, will play hurt.

Downside: Doesn't get many RPMs on the ball, even in the 15- to 18-yard range and will need to somehow upgrade his fastball. Doesn't handle the quick, inside pressure well and will hurry passes, and throw into a crowd, in those situations. Delivery is a bit sluggish. His 40-yard time, better than expected, doesn't translate into elusiveness. There are some scouts who question his leadership.

The dish: A lot of positive buzz a month or so ago, but some of that has quieted, maybe because teams have put him under the microscope more. There is a perception that he is the next standout quarterback from the MAC, but he doesn't appear to be in the same class as Chad Pennington, Byron Leftwich or Ben Roethlisberger. Study him on tape and he sure looks pretty ordinary. He could go as high as the second round, given what some teams are still saying about him, but we obviously think that's way too high.

I would like to thank ESPN for copying ideas out of my posts about 5 for the past nine months. The one thing they all are missing is the lack of winning.

I have a brother who coached college for many years and coached at Maryland for a few. His comment to me at the OU game last year was that 5 was "average". While I think he is a little better than average, you all know I was never a true believer, I believe this ESPN analysis is exactly correct with the exception that I think 5 appeared to be much faster than his 40 time showed.

  5. To me Jabari looks like the QB that would give us the best chance to win.

Jabari was a disaster. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. The easiest pass to throw is the bubble screen because the receiver isn't far away and the blocker makes it almost impossible to intercept the ball. Each time, the receivers had to catch the ball around their knees.

Getsy needs to work on his timing, but that will come. His accuracy was good enough to make him starting QB. Remember the four most important traits of a QB:

    1. Decision Making

    2. Accuracy

    3. Accuracy

    4. Accuracy

  6. Akron could not beat MTSU at home with Charlie, it ain't happening on the road.

AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! Thanks to Zip Watcher, I'm back at it again and I have a lot to say. Thanks ZW.

Just a quick point of fact. We didn't win many games at all with Charlie (19 to be exact).

    Onward and upward.

  7. You beat me to the punch Zipsrifle. I think they stand to draw a good crowd that day as a lot of people take the day off of work and will be looking for something to do. If it appears as if the Tuesday game against OU will have a disasterous crowd, they could move it back to Saturday.

I can see the Zips being 4-2, if not 5-1 if we play well against NIU, after six games. The following week they play Miami and I'm not convinced this Betts kid is all that good and maybe an upset could be in order. I like our chances against OU, Can't and Army. I think Ball State will be looking to kick our ass after what we did to them last year and we could have trouble there.

I've been saying this for months, the Zips are going to win seven games next year. Write it down. If they are in the race next year at the end of the season, the long layoffs between games at the end of the year will benefit the team.

A lot of this will also depend on the quality of the MAC next year. I see no evidence that the league will be better next year, which is encouraging because the Zips will play better.

Oh, by the way, I just heard on television that silicone breast implants may be coming back. No debate on this one, that is a good thing. :D

  8. Ran into a member of the coaching staff today at lunch and asked him about the possibilty of Romeo being a 2 sport player. His answer was that RT was there for a short while on one day messing around with his buds. Asked about the likelyhood of RT securing a release from the BB head coach, he laughed and said it would be zero. He said he probably would make a good DE. :screwks:

In Division I sports, things don't just happen. He didn't sneak into the equipment room and get just the right size equipment for football practice. They don't have players in uniform and on the practice field just for fun. Spring practice is a very serious part of the year, and too serious part of the year to have a guy out there just having fun. There are also legal issues such as injury, insurance policies and scholarships that have to be dealt with as well.

My guess is that there was a tryout for the kid and after practice(s) the discussion with the football coaches lead told him he could not start on the football team next year. At that point, RT decided to stick with basketball. The coaches reply to the question was probably just a nice way of saying "We can't use him and we don't need him".

If I am correct, this is good sign. It says that the Zips have good enough talent on the team that they don't need to get kids from outside of the football program to help them. If a basketball player is your answer to the football teams defensive problems, then we really have problems.

That sigh of relief you heard was KD.

  9. However, ATTENTION TICKET OFFICE:

Please, for the love of attendance, whenever you mail out a communication about ticket sales, include a form to send back with check and/or credit card information. Don't leave any doubt about what you want the recipient of the letter to do. As it stands, your letter tells me where my seats will be located and how much they will cost. You then tell me to call if I have any questions or would like to change seats or buy more seats. Now you have me guessing - do they want me to call to renew my seats? - do they want me to send a check in with the letter as my invoice?

Every year I see questions about why there isn't more fan support and I think that along with winning, it is the dozen or more small things like this that add up to poor attendance. I have personally witnessed several 20 year season ticket holders quit coming to games because of interaction with the Ticket Office.

I'm done with my semi-rant, but I'll leave it with this thought. Which ticket department made out better on this mailing, the Zips or the Aeros?

    LOL

I thought the same exact thing. My wife asked, "Where are we supposed to send the money". I said, "Don't ask.....".

  10. Can't argue with that.....

    I can.

I disagree. We've won NOTHING. Where are the MAC championship banners? Nowhere? Where are the Bowl trophies? Nowhere. Where are the big OOC victories in football and basketball? Nowhere. Where are the 9+ win football and 22+ win basketball seasons? Nowhere. We haven't won squat in comparison to just about anyone in the MAC since we've entered the conference.

We beat Marshall during the football regular season. Six of the 12 teams Marshall played this year beat them. We beat Miami during the basketball regular season. So did woeful Marshall. Big fat hairy deal.

"We went on a tear at the end of the basketball season"? confused.gif We choked-away the MAC title at season's end losing two of our last three. One of those losses was to our rival, and local hoops measuring stick, Can't (for the second time, I might add). Some "tear." rolleyes.gif Then we bowed-out in the MAC quarterfinals...woo hoo.

I was in Can't 7 years ago when we beat them in hoops for the first time in 31 years (in Can't). Us Akron fans sat in the Can't student section behind a hoop. There were plenty of empty seats. That game drew about 3,000 fans. 2,000 were Akron fans...it was like a home game. It was that year that Can't began their "run", winning 20 games for the first of what's now 7 consecutive years. Now Can't gets 5,000 of their OWN fans at most home games. And they've done that for about 6 straight years. How did Can't go from 1,500 fans to 5,000 fans? It wasn't by winning a few regular season games. It was by winning 20+, by consistently winning in the MAC tourney, by winning in the NIT, then winning in the NCAA's. THAT'S what draws fans to games. That combination of a winning tradition and a fan base is what gets you an NIT bid.

If you really think that fans should be flocking in to see the Zips because they are simply competitive...you're nuts. I'll be at games...the rest of the guys on this board will be at games...but you aren't going to pack the house in football or basketball until you win championships.

Personally, I feel we have the coaching staffs in-place to win championships, but almost two decades of football and basketball futility...essentially a generation...cannot be overcome with 6 or 7-win football and 19-win basketball seasons.

    Can't argue with that either......

  11. I PRAY Charlie is NOT drafted by the Browns! All through his college years he had to deal with a weak OL. I want him to go where he WILL have a strong OL.

Who cares about the Browns anyways. When you look back at the last 10 years, not including when the Browns didn't exist, it was all smoke and mirrows. 50% winners!

As a Steelers fan, I hope the Browns do draft Frye.

As a Zips fan, I just hope he gets drafted and makes a lot of money for himself and sends some back to the school.

  12. There is one reason why football AND basketball got snubbed. THE FANS! PERIOD! :puke:

Both team overachieved, played well and won big games. Remember Akron vs. Marshall this year. That was one of the best games of the year. Unfortunately only 30% of the fans that went to the game were there for the end (that leaves about 5K people). It is embarrassing and reflects poorly on our ability to draw fans. THAT IS WHAT IT IS ABOUT! Basketball, we went on a tear at the end of the season, won a big game against Miami.

The University, athletic dept, coaches and players are doing their part. Heck, they are practically giving tickets away and nobody will go.

Until people stop whatever they are doing, go to the Bowl or JAR we will not see any big schools come to Akron or postseason play.

    Can't argue with that.....

  13. The only difference between Ben and Charlie are about 4 wins per season. :D

The key word in your message is "wins". One of those two QBs is a winner and the other is a guy who has to have one excuse after another made for his lack of winning.

Four wins in football is a huge deal. It is frequently the difference between making the playoffs or not. For example, 12-4 gets you into the playoffs and probably one home game. 8-8 gets you nothing.

  14. NIT give a home game to San Francisco. A school that finished 16-13 with a losing record in their conference 6-8. What got them in you ask -- 2 big wins one against Gonzaga and one against Pacific. The same thing that got San Fran in kept us out -- games against Mount Union instead of someone who would look good on our record. We had this conversation earlier -- the OOC schedule this year was terrible. I hope it's better next year.

    WOW! Excellent point!

  15. I'm sorry, but I just don't agree with any of this. The kid is an average to below average player for a kid his size and in the conference he is playing in. The Zips have enough outside shooters. We needed him most on the boards this year and he didn't produce.

If I remember correctly, he is going into his senior year next year. I believe that at this point, a kid either has what it takes to be successful or not. He isn't going to get much bigger between now and next year, so the development is over. In this case, the kid will never be a go to guy and will just be an average player off of the bench. With Wood coming back next year, I really don't see much use for the guy.

Why isn't anyone screaming today about why a senior misses a foul shot to take the lead with seconds remaining in the game, or for that matter, 1 for 4 foul shooting for the game? All of the pressure would have been on WMU.

Throughout the season, the Zips proved they were a good team and did not show that in the tournament yesterday by losing to a team they beat on the road earlier in the season. Did they overachieve......I don't know, but I think their record shows that they maybe had a good team going into the season and just showed themselves during the year. I would choose to call them performers because the performed well. I expected at least a semi-final game from them after the season they had and they disappointed. Sorry to rain on the usual post losing a big game lover fest.

  16. Class and Bob Pruett, now that's funny.

This guy was a cheater who won MAC titles while breaking rules. He may be a nice cheater, but he was still a

rule-breakin' title thief, especially back in 2000 when they stole one from the Zips.

Nice work. I apprreciate any writer who is as mean spirited as I am. Hats off for pointing out the reality of the Marshall football program. Good luck to them in ConferenceDOA.
