Why no big guys?

Recommended Posts

It seems to me that the poster does not know or does not understand Coach Dambrot's game philosophy. So, here is an update for his benefit.

Coach Dambrot prefers to employ quick, athletic players. Few big men are quick enough to work well in defenses that rely on pressure tactics. The height limit has long been around six foot eight. Dambrot is not the first coach to recognize this. Lew Henson some years ago routinely put the University of Illinois into the Sweet Sixteen and higher while not having a single player taller than six foot six.

While I agree that having a couple of tall players that can rebound and dominate close in are an asset that I personally would love to have, they are not a necessity when your front line consists of players such as Jeremiah Wood, Romeo Travis and Rick McFadden. These players all approximately six foot six or seven are athletic and leap well. They are agile enough to compete with the bigger men.

Two of the three incoming players match this standard. The third, six foot five shooting guard Jimmy Conyers is an exceptional athlete with great leaping ability. Better still, he is a bonafide shooter BIGTIME.

Coach Dambrot has a long history of recruiting well. His first recruiting class headed to Akron next year are three (and possibly four as Terry Eargle is still possibility) excellent recruits that any other MAC school would love to have.

Do not forget that an excellent point guard, Nick Dials, is sitting out his transfer year. Make no mistake, Dials would be the starter on the point for the Suckeyes if he were still at Columbus State.

I was long in the category of Hooper, wondering why no good big guys in some recent classes. Then a fellow MAC fan friend of mine asked me 2 simple questions:

"How many NBA caliber centers have you seen pass through the MAC since Akron joined the conference? How many bonafide dominant low post players over 6' 8" have you seen?"

It made me think for awhile, and I could only come up with Kaman as a MAC player who went on to play / get drafted by the NBA as a center. As for dominant low post players, I can think of a few: Anthony Stacey, Gary Trent, Brandon Hunter, Antonio Gates .. I'm sure I'm missing a few ... but these were all great players in the MAC, and none were any taller than Romeo. Beefier .. perhaps, but height wasn't such a big part of their success. If you stood next to Stacey, he was actually about 6-3 .. and he used to DESTROY us inside, when we had a 7' center.

Ultimately, we have to consider the conference in recruiting, and having a stable of athletic 6-7 to 6-9 guys is going to help bring success in the league. I'm off the issue of having a true center.

Edwards was a stiff, no matter who's writing his paycheck these days.

Stop it with the condecending opening statements, GoZips. It is becoming a pattern, and it will stop.

If you want to "talk down" to other Zips fans, you can take it to a different board.

i agree. it would be nice to get a qualtiy big guy,but the reality is there are very few of them period in college ball. if they have any kind of skill they go pro right away, or go to a acc/pac 10 ten school. even then usually stay in school only one,or two years at the most. there are a few guys that can develope over time like a kaman ,and edwards. they have to be deveopled, and how many of those guys ever really become good nba players.as the other poster said how many guys over 6'8 came out of the mac ,and was a decent pro player. not many. the theory is great, but the reality is far different.
