bobbyake
I'm tired of seeing Akron suck. I'm tired of seeing Akron do so well in the recruiting rankings only to see all the good recruits not play because they were high risk recruits no one else wanted to take a gamble on. I'm tired of seeing this 3-3-5 defense do nothing against the run. I'm tired of seeing JD ruin everything Lee Owens did for the Zips. The only time JD ever did anything good was when he was working with Lee Owens recruits. With the new stadium next year, I hope Akron goes out and gets a coach worthy of the ZIPS. zippyrifle32
Unless he leaves on his own or is somehow killed in a freak accident, this isn't going to be his last year. There's also plenty of season left to redeem himself.
Blue & Gold
I know, I'm disappointed too. I'm beyond sick of losing too. I'm actually glad I couldn't get any of my friends to come to the game with me today (weather.) But I'm not giving up on JD yet. I don't know what to think about the 3-3-5. In my mind, I just consider it a version of the 3-4. But I do know that the D-Line has been decimated and that if we had Bain and Lively in there it may be a different story. Looking at the youth on the roster I also think our D-Line is poised to be good for years. Ditto for RB, OL, QB, DBs & WRs. I think we're in good shape but have played the most difficult part of this season's schedule under-manned.

bobbyake
We talk about JD having a great recruiting class every year, right??? And then all those great recruits never make it to field, right??? Akron was picked to be 1-11 by some and just as bad by many.I'd rather see this organization move forward, not backwards. I’ve seen no forward progress with JD. With the new stadium, I’d like to see a coach that can make adjustments at half-time, recruit solid players, create a winning tradition. Maybe you guys need Can't to beat us first to get upset with JD, last years season was reason enough for me.
GoZips
Maybe it was because I hung with Jamie Reader (now coaching HS FB in PA) and Russell Holmes at today's game that I am moderately calm. At least the Zips showed some life and put up a fight.Like the rest of you I loathe the 3-3-5 undefense. It is like being in a permanent prevent. You all knowwhat that prevents. Is JD out of touch with his fan base? Why do we (Zips fans) have to be the eternal guinea pigs of college football? Isn't it high time for a solid, fundamental coaching staff?I just have to believe that our kids can match up to nearly any other program. If, they are given areal chance. It is time to play fundamentally sound, conservative, hard nose football. As long as we beat the teams we should beat and pull off one or two real upsets (Syra-excuse was no upset), I will be satisfied. I think MRasor laid out a doable game plan. Let us see if we can accomplishit and get to a bowl. Not time to be ranting about JD's head. Well, not this early in the season. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
This is going to be a very good offense this year. Syracuse was no fluke. If anything, today was the fluke. How many tip drills did our receivers set up their DBs on today? That's about a year's worth of bonehead bad-hands plays in one afternoon. This team still scored 24 points on a TERRIBLE day people. I do agree that the D is frightening and we'll have to see whether Bain and Co. can get on the field. Anyone who was at the game should agree that the Zips were not crushed, nor were they outclassed by the Chirpers. They simply blew good chances, good drives, made too many idiot mistakes. This is not going to be a terrible season though, unless the D absolutely falls apart.GO ZIPS!SeeTeeMaybe it was because I hung with Jamie Reader (now coaching HS FB in PA) and Russell Holmes at today's game that I am moderately calm. RACER
seetee did you watch the same game?we gave up 500 yards on defense today.the defense has been horrible the whole year.i agree we have some injuries on the d-line that is hurting us,but ball state beat the crap out of us today.cuse is probably the worst team in d-1 right now.hopefully the zips can win at army, but we are not a very good football team right now.maybe thing will change if we get healthy, but right now the zips are not very good.we are 1-2 right now not 3-0.zips need to win next week and will be our best chance to win on the road the rest of the season. And I'll ask you, RACER, what game were YOU watching???? If we execute and eliminate even 1/2 of the mistakes the game is a toss-up.
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
The D was frightening, no doubt, although didn't we gain 400+ total yards on offense as well? Had we not played tip drill all afternoon I strongly believe that it would have been, at worst, a tight game. High scoring yes, but tight with a chance for the Zippers to win. I think (or at least I hope!) that the offense will compensate for the awful D in many of the remaining games this year. And before we give too much credit to the Chirpers, this horrible Zips performance still netted 24 points, and should have scored many more. Bain, brother man, it's time to suit up and get out there. Before I forget, there was a Zips male cheerleader on the sideline today who was as big as many of the players. If I'm JD, and the D can't stop Army next week, I'm looking to suit that dude up.SeeTeeseetee did you watch the same game?we gave up 500 yards on defense today.the defense has been horrible the whole year.i agree we have some injuries on the d-line that is hurting us,but ball state beat the crap out of us today.cuse is probably the worst team in d-1 right now.hopefully the zips can win at army, but we are not a very good football team right now.maybe thing will change if we get healthy, but right now the zips are not very good.we are 1-2 right now not 3-0.zips need to win next week and will be our best chance to win on the road the rest of the season. skip-zip
Ok...let's please clear up a few things....especially regarding the former coach...1) Didn't Owens have an overall record somewhere around 25 games under 500?? JD is going to really have to fall apart over the next few years to even remotely meet that level of futility for his career at Akron. 2) JD's early success had a lot to do with bringing in Getsy and Biggs, and moving Hixon to WR. So, the argument that we won a MAC title only because he had another coaches players is really a hard argument to make.3) If you think the former coach's recruits were so much better, how come he couldn't win with them?Ok..now on to the Ball State game....As I predicted in a pre-game thread, we weren't going to be able to hang with these guys if it stopped raining. And actually, we didn't do too bad. Keep in mind that they got one touchdown by picking a fumble off of the ground and running it in. That always kills you. For the most part, we matched them moving the ball (the total yardage was close to even), but the mistakes KILLED us. Ball State is going to pile up a lot of yards, and a lot of points against plenty of other schools in the MAC this year as well. I think at least 1 or 2 of the interceptions we threw were the result of tipped balls. We're still having tackling problems on defense. No doubt. The one that frustrated me the most was how they were running out the clock late in the game, and were still able to run for first downs. When you know they are going to run, and you can't stop them, that's a problem. I'd like to see some of those guys go to Tackling 101 school. I'm not going to criticize the defensive set. As we all know, the guys on the field have to make plays. We're only a week removed from a great win for our program...on the road against a BCS school. Yes, Syracuse is no big conquest right now, but it still helps our program. We all knew Ball State was a good team, and they showed it. Let's just move on to week 4 and see what happens. GP1
I'm tired of seeing Akron suck.Actually, NE Ohio sports fans never get tired of seeing their teams suck. They seem to love the endless five year cycles of firing coaches and rebuilding. NE Ohio sports fans are so comfortable with losing that they enjoy this cycle more than winning. I truely believe it is a sickness. At some point, the players need to be held accountable for five turnovers.
bobbyake
I think we all are worried about an ugly season this year. I'm becoming more vocal now because I'd like to see some changes made to prevent the ugly season from happening. Like a new defense for example. 4-3? 3-4? 4-4? anything different from the 3-3-5 defense please.Injuries are one thing, but this team should be deep enough to have underclassmen step in to stop a team from running all over us.The main reason I'm getting on JD's case, there is no excuse for back-to-back losing seasons. This program should have higher expectations than that. You're not going to sell out Info Stadium with a losing program. You wont have a chance to make it to the Big East. You're never going to win over the market from OSWho in the Northeast Ohio area. For JD to have 2 losing seasons in a row, I think the program will need a new direction.I know it's still early in the season, but I'm honestly worried about how it's going to turn out.
