Captain Kangaroo Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Just curious if anyone here has any "voodoo" to help the Zips get off the snide and win a home football game? Was it enough to simply quit doing to "Separated at Birth/Look-alike" threads? Or is more required for a home win? Lucky underwear? Rabbit's foot? The picture below is reportedly (unconfirmed) from the early 90's, in the Townhouse Bar basement, where GP1 took one for the team and ended one of Coach Faust's legendary slumps. Would you take one for the team? Quote
Zip N' Dots Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 I would do just about anything for a win in the Rubber Bowl this year even streak down GW onto the field! Quote
GP1 Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Skipping the tailgating in the grass for tailgating at the Platinum Horse is a good as a slump busting activity as you can do. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Perhaps we need to "pass the hat" and bid for a "Mr. Irrelevant" trophy on eBay in honor of UA's very own Mr. Irrelevant XVIII, Daron Alcorn, whose 56 yard FG was the difference the last time UA defeated UT. Quote
skip-zip Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 johnnyzip....I'm so happy that there are fellow old timers on this site like you who remember that 1992 game against Toledo. I was about 30 years old at the time, which did not prevent me from running out onto the field with the students when Alcorn kicked that field goal. It was an Acme Zip game, our first game as a MAC member, and a totally electric atmosphere at the bowl that night. I still rank that as my #1 Rubber Bowl moment of all time. If I recall, the Mr. Irrelevant award was because Alcorn was picked in the final pick of the draft, before players start to go to teams as free agents....correct? Which actually reminds me to inform the younger folks of another interesting fact. Victor Green, who had a long and successful NFL career, never got drafted. The Jets picked him up that same year, and I think by about his 2nd year, he was the starting safety. I think it's just amazing to relive the fact that one of Akron's best players ever in the NFL was not even drafted!!!Anyway...anything that reminds me of that night would be great. But I don't think this is a slump at all. We knew going into this year that those early games against BSU, BG, and Cincinnati were going to be tough games for us to win. I'm just happy we are in the position we are in right now. And can you imagine people talkign about JD for coach of the year? We were picked to finish LAST....I'm really enjoying this. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 skip, it's true that Alcorn was THE LAST pick in the '92 draft and that's why he was so "honored". That year's team was talented as I recall, but just couldn't do anything in a crucial home loss to BUGS, dooming any real shot of 1st year MAC glory. Ahhh the good old days....well you know the truth about them and it's why we can appreciate this year's team all the more. I just hope they come to play tomorrow night. Quote
