The University of Akron @ VCU

thought the zips showed alot of heart battling back the way they did. they were down heavily and didnt give up. made a game of it late but couldnt quite close the distance. the difference in the game was the early turnovers in the face of the Ram's full court press. Akron turned it over 6 or 7 times early alot of them for layups that gave VCU a nice cushion to work with the rest of the game. After a while the Zips backcourt got the hang of it and started getting the ball up easily but often they were so late in the shot clock starting their offense that they didnt get off a good shot. I thought the McKnights played well, especially Chris, which was encouraging. I'd like to see Brett take better shots when he gets the ball down low instead of the 15 foot fadeaway. The first half wasnt pretty at all but i think that there is alot the Zips can take away from this game as positives for the future. Although like someone said there are no moral victories. Zips need a big winning streak and some good shooting. Roberts play has got to improve as well. Random sidenote i know haha :)

RootForRoo....we indeed saw an old Jimmy C. stat line in that game last night. Does this mean those good couple of games were a mirage? I sure hope not. He could be the pleasant surprise that helps this team overachieve this year.
Personally i just think it was a bad game, but it's still worrying. I did not see if Conyers started, did he? That seems to be a problem when he doesn't lately.

tried to post this topic but not sure if it will get approved by your moderator ...but if you want to see some video highlights from last nights game check out www.VCURamNation.com ...we try and show the games how they really went (so Akron Highlights and VCU lowlights included). We are just a bunch of VCU fans who put this site together so we don't have a Chris Berman calling the dunks and stuff, but hopefully it will do...

thanks for the linki didnt notice it until now but it sure looked like they were putting alot of pressure on McNees and he made some pretty nice passes to set up open looks. Not something you see much from him so that's a good thing.

It's disappointing whenever you let one get away against a good team. I think VCU is a lot like Akron, and perhaps it would have turned out differently on our homecourt. But when you lose one like this, the best you can hope for is that lessons learned will help win some later in the season. If there's any kind of pattern to be seen in this, it may be that the Zips are not quick enough in their adjustments. This is not purely a player problem, but also involves the coaching staff. The Zips started strong, VCU adjusted and came back in the first half to take a big lead. The Zips adjusted pretty well at halftime and won the seoncd half. But what if they had adjusted before the end of the first half and kept it close?I don't like to second-guess too much, because I am not a basketball genius. I just try to make the most of what I understand about the game. Ultimately, the answer may be that there was good reason why all the "experts" thought the Zips wouldn't be that good this year. Perhaps they are playing reasonably close games against better teams because they are over-achieving. If so, both the coaching staff and the players deserve credit for making games closer than expected. What does that mean for the rest of the year? I just don't know. I think the Zips will always perform at least a little better than a cold analysis of each player's individual talent might indicate because KD is an above-average coach. If everything goes really well, I think they have a chance to win the MAC Tournament and get to the big dance, regardless of their pre-conference record. The odds are probably against it, but it's not so hopeless that we should all give up.

Just happened upon a broadcast of the VCU-Oklahoma game from Oklahoma City, and was surprised to see VCU leading #4 Oklahoma with a couple of minutes left in the first half. Oklahoma has since scored a few, and will take the lead into halftime. But VCU is playing really well against a top team.

You did a nice job and by the way if you haven't fixed it already, Akron is part of the Mid American Conference not the Mid Atlantic Conference (not even sure there is one of those).

VCU is one of the most dangerous and underrated teams in the country. Last year, they upset Duke in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the second round. They will likely compete for the CAA crown again this year against strong teams like George Mason, Old Dominion, and Hofstra. Loosing to VCU by 4 is not something to be down about.
