Captain Kangaroo
Phil "Tonganator" Tonga has committed to the Zips, as has Dave Anderson - an LB from Cincinnati Purcell Marion. Jonathan Root, a TE from Erie Cathedral Latin will Grayshirt. We are still in the hunt for QB Knicely's services. Jermaine Robinson de-verbaled again, and went back to Toledo. Two scholarships remain - Likely to go to a QB and a DB.There is also one super-duper, top-secret, hush hush existing commitment that I am not privy to. ZachTheZip
Do you think we'll see any recruits or current players leave to follow coach Moorhead that could open up some extra scholarships?
Captain Kangaroo
Do you think we'll see any recruits or current players leave to follow coach Moorhead that could open up some extra scholarships? No. There are two remaining, and no one else is expected to back out (Jermaine was always iffy).Vidovec and Knicely were the two Moorhead recruits - Vidovec is solid. Knicely still leans towards the Zips. Nothing has changed.

Oh, but this is not meant to be a backhanded compliment and I wish him and Toledo all the best.

Oh, but this is not meant to be a backhanded compliment and I wish him and Toledo all the best. You're right about academics. In fact, he fits what Toledo and Akron has done in recent years very well. That's why both Toledo and Akron recruited him while some others did not. That's not a backhanded comment by you or me, just fact. I am a Toledo fan and I admit that. Maybe you should as an Akron fan too. However, saying in terms of athletic ability that he is way above Toledo's type of recruit is just wrong. I will only give a couple of examples. What about UT safety Barry Church? He chose Toledo over several BCS offers and was a freshman all-america as a true freshman and has been All-MAC all three years of his career. Running back DaJuane Collins had over 50 DI-A offers with several BCS including Penn State, West Virginia, Purdue, and Boston College. Running back Morgan Williams just set a single game school record for rushing yards in a game this past season as a freshman and he was very highly recruited before the big schools gave up on him because of his academics. To Morgan's credit, he paid his way through school in 2007-08 and got his grades up and was eligible in 2008 and is still doing well in the classroom.Let's face it, both Toledo and Akron have open enrollment and we are more likely to take chances on kids with a lot of talent but poor academics.Toledo's new coach is forcing all players to sit in the first two rows of all classes, and he is going around and checking to make sure they are in class and in the first two rows. He also is hiring a couple of academic liaisons for the football program to help kids beyond what the athletic department does with tutoring. He's working to change the past academic issues at Toledo. If Jermaine Robinson still decided to come to Toledo, he knows what is expected of him. Will he ever see the field? Who knows?! Captain Kangaroo
There is also one super-duper, top-secret, hush hush existing commitment that I am not privy to.One can only hope he's as top flight as this guy. ;)Thanks for the updates!Go Zips!Several years ago I got fed up with the Beacon’s shoddy recruiting coverage and figured “If they won’t cover it, I’ll do it myself.” That’s why I do it today. I’ve explained how that one transpired to a few, but for those whom I haven’t, here’s the story –Back in January 2006 I spoke to someone within the UA Athletic Department regarding Zips football recruiting. The conversation went something like this:Mr. X: “We’ve got a 4-star recruit who just committed to the Zips!”Me: “Can you give me a name?”Mr. X: “No. But I can say the following – he’s a Rival’s 4-star recruit from Pennsylvania. He’s rated in their Top 20 nationally at his position. He plays on the offensive side of the ball and although Akron is not listed as one of the schools recruiting him, he’s coming to UA. That’s all I can say.”Ok. So I go on to Rivals and look at the WR’s, RB’s, OL’s…I scan everyone. And the only Top 20 offensive player shown as uncommitted was LeSean McCoy. So I go back to Mr. X and ask: “If I were to post that LeSean McCoy is coming to Akron, would that be ok?”Mr. X replied: “Go ahead.”Why did Mr. X do this? To be honest, I don’t know. But back in 2006 I didn’t have nearly the relationships within UA that I presently have. I think, at the time, Mr. X just thought I wanted to play a joke and that I was only wondering if the joke might hurt the program at all. It wouldn’t, so he told me “Go ahead.” I don’t think such a communication gaffe would occur in 2009, but 2006 was a different time. So…how wasn’t this recruit LeSean McCoy, if every possible sign pointed to him?Mr. X neglected to tell me his Rivals information was from 2005, not 2006. The recruit was actually David Harvey, who attended a prep school from ’05 – ‘06. So I got some egg on my face for that one. What can you do… I think my track record since then has been pretty good? I take a lot of pride in getting recruiting information correct, and on ZipsNation before you see it anywhere else. I know a lot of the ‘Nation enjoys it, and it is fun to assemble. And, to be honest, it is fun to beat the Beacon. So that’s the way it transpired. Believe it…or not.Funny story to close this out:At the football Golf Outing two years ago I spoke to a Coach about this story. He said “Yeah…once that LeSean info was put on the Internet I started getting phone calls. Coaches from all over the place were calling wondering “How’d you get that kid?” We all told them “The new practice facility”

And now he's declared early for the NFL draft. Now I'm really mad we didn't get him.
johnnyzip84
I just realized that losing Jermaine Robinson back to the Rockettes means we'll probably be shut out on the Post Gazette Fabulous 22 this year
