App. State wasn't supposed to win its opener either.Just as a thinker, here are some "upsets" to consider. :rock:http://themacdaily.com/index.php?news&nid=62
That's a good list, but don't ask me how one leaves off Miami's 21-12 defeat of LSU in Baton Rouge during the 1986 season. The Bengal Tigers would go on to finish 9-3 as SEC champs that same year.Link
I believe his list consisted of season openers. It would be nice to be on the list. B)

Week 1 — beat Penn State. Week 2 — Open a sweet stadium. It's a good time to be a Zip.

39 days until kick-off!!
Only 39 days, man that doesn't make it sound so far away now, does it?
39 days = 5.5 weeks. That sounds pretty short, too!Zen, Kenana looking good! You know, guys, fans of rival teams used to come in and try to mess with the Nittany Lion statue. Syracuse painted it orange one year -- it had to be sand-blasted off. Some punks even broke one of its ears -- if you look closely at the right one, I think it is, you can see the fault line.PLEASE don't go crazy, but if a Zip fan were to knit a sweater or something (obviously in Akron colors) and drape it over the statue, it would definitely raise the stakes. Do this late Friday night, so the folks walking around campus early Saturday can see it. Tie it on real well so it's hard to get off. Of course, the assault team can get pics of their dirty deed, cuz it won't be on there for long. Don't spend a lot of bucks -- again, your emblem probably won't last.Be aware that PSU students might guard the statue, so use your discretion. You don't want to spend the game in Centre County Jail -- they don't broadcast the games in there. (No personal experience -- honest!)I wouldn't let every team's fans know this tradition -- wouldn't trust them. You guys are pretty cool (except for Kid -- he's a wild 'un. J/k!!!), so I'm trusting you to do something fun but not destructive. Good luck!! Post pics here, pls.Go to Wiki and look for "Nittany Lion". Here's most of the article on the statue. The Lion Shrine The Lion ShrineDuring the 1940s, seeking a place to hold pep rallies and victory celebrations, students launched a campaign for a lion shrine. As its gift to the university, the Class of 1940 voted to give the sum of $5,430 to pay for the construction of such a shrine, which was to be constructed between the Recreation Building and Beaver Stadium, with the lion framed against a natural setting of trees, grass, and shrubs. The sculptor Heinz Warnecke was retained to carve the lion at the site from a thirteen-ton block of limestone. The sculpture was formally unveiled on October 24, 1942. The shrine has come to be one of the most visited and photographed sites, not just on campus, but also in the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.[edit] Guarding the ShrineThis is a Homecoming weekend tradition at Penn State, started in 1966 when Sue Paterno (wife of football coach Joe Paterno) and a friend covered the lion in orange latex-based paint as a way of stoking interest in that year's game against PSU rival Syracuse. While that paint washed off easily, a later dousing by actual Syracuse fans with oil-based paint proved much harder to remove, requiring sand blasting. The shrine is guarded for the duration of Homecoming weekend by Penn State's ROTC detachment, Blue Band, alumni, current students, faculty, and by the Lion Ambassadors. The latter group brings food, music, games, and (starting in 2004) an event called "Last Guard Standing", attracting students from all over campus. Originally, the guard was manned by freshmen

Guarding the Shirne...Now that sounds like a very cool tradition. If we had anything like that at our school it's been lost to history I'm afraid.

Ahhh my mistake. Thanks UADavid! I'm sure a simple list of MAC "giant killings" would be considerably longer.

I'm pumped. It's 3 1/2 months away, but I'm ready for football season to start.Rasor's Penn State previewI think we'll have a better chance to beat them than we've ever had before. We have a mostly veteran team who won't be scared or in awe of their crowd. Walt Harris knows how to beat Penn State at their place, and you can bet that he's doing all he can to get us ready to beat his old rival. Our strengths will be up against their weaknesses. A win there would give us the confidence to beat any other team on the schedule. They're our only truly difficult match up. ARE YOU READING THIS, ZIPS FOOTBALL PLAYERS AND COACHES? I want a win. There's no reason why you won't go out there and shock the entire state of Pennsylvania. I've heard that some of you don't think you can win. If that's true, the get the hell off the team and never come back. You are here to play Division I football against the highest level of competition. If you can't handle that, we'll find someone who will. This is what you signed up for. Anything less than 100% effort is a disgrace. You can win. You have all the ability you need to win.As for the fans, talk it up. Get under their fans' skins. Show that you have confidence in your team. Don't let them put you down as a weak opponent when we're clearly the best opponent on their non-conference schedule. Nothing can put doubt into their minds faster than a confident opposing fan base.Pennlive forumScout forumRivals forumESPN game discussionThey still haven't has any serious discussion us. Now's the perfect time to catch them off guard. It's go time! PSUcks! The Nittany Housecats are going down. Get angry! :gun: :gun:
where do you people come up with your weird concepts.......always love a good laugh...thanks

Freshman CB Darrell Givens is ineligible to play this year at Penn State. He is looking to play at a prep school so he doesn't have to sit out a year. He was rated the #6 CB in the nation on Scout and was being counted upon to bolster a relatively weak secondary.Bombs away, Jacq.

http://www.gopsf.com/video/watch/157/All%20InPromotional video for Akron vs. PSU.
We've played you before and not one clip of Akron vs. PSU? Sure its easy to make you look good against all of those other easy teams you play, couldn't you even find one good play against us? OK, so it seemed more like a season promotional video than an Akron one.

For those of us who can't make the game and has cable, is there anyway to make sure the cable company plays the Akron Penn St. game on the big ten network. Here is what JoePa said at the Big Ten Media Day:And Penn State’s Joe Paterno, doing his best Lou Holtz impression in discussing his team’s season opener: “We'll have our troubles with Akron. Akron is a well-coached football team.” But we’ll win by three touchdowns.

I talked to athletics today and they are working on a watch party at the Barley House for the Penn State Game.
I hope they can get some drink and appetizer specials going similar to OBC, it made for a great gameday party. Either way, I'll be there again every game with the family in tow.

Joe you can quote me, "Get Real". Your Lions are going DOWN - BIG TIME on 9/5/09. I won't be suprised if the Zips WIN by three touchdowns.Granted Penn may be a good team, not just of the same caliber as the Zips. The new Penn State Battle Cry, "And the Cowardly Lion, all he wanted was some Courage" (Dorothy from the Wizard Of Oz). Fight on you cowardly Nittney Lions! The ZIPS are comin' to play!!

I agree that Penn is not of the caliber of the Zips. However you are not playing the Quakers.
Of course we are not playing the Quakers. We are playing the Mighty & Fearless Penn State Nittany Lions. Everyone is afraid of you . You are invincible. We know what we’re up against. We know of your historical accomplishments. We know you think of us as a “cupcake” opponent. We know of your highly touted QB. But we do not fear you. As a matter of fact You Had Better FEAR THE ROO.This game will be analogous to the Real biblical story of David and Goliath (you being Goliath, and us ZIPS being David). The common misconception of the face-off between the giant Goliath and the young boy David, was that, David (armed only with a slingshot a pouch full of stones) reached into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath's head. Finding a hole in Goliath’s armor, the stone sank into the giant’s forehead and he fell face down on the ground. David then took Goliath's sword, killed him and then cut off his head. But that’s the fairy tale biblical story for children. But back to the Real biblical story of David and Goliath. (you being Goliath, and us ZIPS being David). What really happened… David fearlessly stood his ground, his strong legs and sandaled feet planted firmly in the dirt. When the giant criticized, insulted and threatened, David didn't stop or even waver. He stared straight into the Giant Goliath’s eyes. And then…., David reached down and removed one of his sandals, and then…, David leapt mightily into the air, hovering momentarily right smack in front of Goliath’s face, and then, and then…, he took his sandal and BITCH-SLAPPED that Giant because we all know that PSU is still our Bit..h, and always will be. We know who we’re playing. Do you?, You little bi…. Slapped losers. :) ZIPS RULE. AKRON 28PSU 6
