Somebody who can see the incredible potential here, and can devise a plan to make that a reality as quickly as possible.Something I have seen when watching other AD searches is that people always want a guy with strong ties to their university, somebody who already bleeds the school colors. More often than not, those candidates end up as disappointments when you're not yet established. Akron is going through a major transition, and we need somebody who can continue that. An outside way of thinking with a good general skill set for working at a state school, somebody who can raise lots of money until he gets the athletic department to a self-sustaining level. I'd also take anyone else who's worked for or trained under Thomas - is there anyone else good on his staff at Cincinnati? I was most pleased with things during his time here and anyone who operates in like mind would be great. I'd also ask Dambrot for his suggestions. He loves this university and while it might be unorthodox to suggest names to become your boss, I trust he'd have the university's best interests at heart - even for football. He has had a couple shots at a big chair, including here at Akron, and has not landed the deal.If we need a guy to bring in money, we at least need someone who can close a deal. Zips fan Posted June 12, 2009 Report Share Posted June 12, 2009 I like JD, but he gave up his business job to pursue a football coaching career. I can't imagine that he gets to a DI-A head coaching position and then changes directions back to business/AD. The thing I remember about Waddell was his incredible work ethic. This guy was in the office before 6AM many days and was willing to do whatever it took to get the job done. I liked the combination of Mike Thomas, who was more polished-well spoken-front guy, and Mike Waddell-hard working, high expectations from himself and his staff. Since we won't be able to bring Thomas back, I think Waddell is a great choice. He knows the school, many boosters, the president, and many of the challenges our programs face.
