There marketing department, I helped you out.Now try another cutesy thing likeWhose House? Roo's House!
How about The House of Roo?
I think someone mentioned this in the nickname for the Info thing but...The House Roo BuiltWhich technically it kind of did, the Fear the Roo campaign was probably one of the biggest things the athletic department ever did.(Sorry oldies, Acme Zip game was nice for a game but I never saw too much Zips paraphanalia during the year or even at the game, I see Fear the Roo everywhere I go)

Our mascot is a kangaroo, but we're not and our athletes are not either. We-- and they-- are Zips.To the age-old, dismissive, insulting question of, "What the hell's a Zip?," my answer from now on is, "You're worst fricking nightmare, pal. Your worst fricking nightmare."

That just gave me a great idea. We should play up the "What's a Zip?" thing. It can be a viral thing. Post billboards and flyers all over town with only those words on them in blue and gold. Or maybe do it nationally in random conspicous places. Offer no explanation, no link to GoZips.com, nothing. Be mysterious and let people find out for themselves. Get buzz started all over the country. Sometimes it seems like you can't start anything cool from within Ohio; it has to come in from outside the state.Maybe hold a youtube contest where people try to explain what they think a Zip is.The athletic department can take full credit for this. Take it. It's yours. Just do something, something big.

Dude, genius. Absolute genius. I especially like the idea of posting these ads in other states. When I was in junior high, my friends and I always picked the Zips in NCAA football '05 because of the overall obscurity of the name. Our original reason for picking Akron was because my friend had a zips hat. He said some guy walked up to him and handed him the hat. My friend says, "what's this?" He says "it's a zip." Me and my friend always laughed. Wtf? Why is a kangaroo called a zip? It was that obscurity and frankly, the humor, that drove us to use Akron in EVERYTHING from then on. The ironic part is that I eventually ended up here as a student. I never thought that would happen. And while we're on the topic of marketing...why isn't the whole' FEAR THE ROO' Logo combined with akron football more often. There's only shirts that say 'Akron football' or other Fear the Roo shirts. All the sports should have their own version of Fear the roo apparel!

Could lead into a whole "I'm a Zip" thing? Or is that just way too much copying?

I like all this but I think "What's a zip" seems a little too odd in a bad way.Let's get a obscure even yet a little more.... I might have suggested "Got Zip?" if that dairy campaign never existed. So how about being even more mysterious and obscure and just run huge signs that say Zip?It's psychology. If you direct the inquiry at someone "What's a zip?"Their mind responds emotionally "Who cares..."But if you make it more obscure "Zip?"Then it becomes a mystery and their mind responds with "huh? What new thing am I not hip to here?"zip2.jpgof course, it helps if you then go out and shock a ranked opponent and then people are like "Ohhhh!"

So does it matter that when I do a google search for "zip" I see nothing Akron related in the first 15 pages?
That's kind of the point.
So you want to market "zip?" and when people google it and don't come up with The Akron Zips, and that's the point?I like our current marketing plan compared to that one.

Sure, but if you do a search for "zips" you get Rasor's blog as the 11th result. Gozips.com is the 14th result, but it;s on the second page.If you had a bunch of people googling for zips and then clicking on UA related sites we would move up the page. Just another benefit of the "What's a Zip?" idea.
