ZachTheZip
Here's the map of campus parking lots, with parking decks outlined in green. The one on Exchange outside of Shrank is under construction. Looking at this, all the close parking is for VIPs. Lots 12, 14, 20, 30, 34, and 38 are the best for tailgating that aren't decks. I doubt that you'll be allowed to tailgate in city-owned decks, so getting in the university lots is important. The one in between the Chapel and Route 8 is handicap parking only, unfortunately. GP1
I addition to all of this, I am sure there will be many, many Greek houses parking cars on their lots/yards to make some extra cash. Also, there will probably be quite a few off campus houses parking cars for beer money as well.

This week i met with the UA chief of police. He said absolutely no cooking or use of anything flammable in the parking decks. He said there were no defined areas for tailgating as of now and that they were looking to see what they could accomodate. My impression was that tailgating is a new situation for the campus (Duh) and they don't really know how to accomodate all with the limited space they have. I think they should set up one lot as a tailgate city and charge for permits to get in. It would compensate for the loss of car parking spaces that will not need to set up tents, etc. and need more square feet. I would think the athletic administration would welcome the atmosphere created by tailgaters. They should bend over backwards to make that happen and to grow the excitement tailgaters bring. akronad
I am beginning to see that this going to get a bit ugly. I spoke with the Asst. AD for faciltiies & operations 18 months ago and mentioned this to him, and all he did was roll his eyes. I am finding it very difficult for the U of A to not have thought about or given consideration to the tailgaters. It is an american way of life when it comes to football games. It looks as though they might have dropped the ball on this situation.

Shouldn't the handicapped parking be nearest the stadium?
tbozeglav
Lot 34 is where I think ill tailgate. It's paved in the driving lanes, but all the parking spots are gravel. If you get a perimeter spot, you also have grass you can set some stuff up on. Its a bit of a walk to the stadium, but you get to walk right through the heart of campus. ZachTheZip
is handicap parking only, unfortunately.Speaking as one of those "handicap" parkers. may I just say, "FU!"No offense, but shouldn't handicapped parking be a bit closer to the stadium? I'm not against having a handicapped lot, but that was one of the lots where tailgating seemed like it would work well. Judging from the reaction from the administration, things like that will be at a premium.
skip-zip
Right now, I'm not overly concerned about the total crowd being accomodated. It won't be as easy as parking everyone in a big grass field adjacent to the stadium, like we had before. And for some people who get there closer to game time, there's going to be increased traffic, longer walks, and possibly a shuttle involved. I just hope it doesn't turn off some potential new fans. Now back to the tailgating...I guess the only thing that concerns me is that, with the limitations with the parking decks, and the number of outdoor lots that are completely paved.....how many areas are even available that have grassy areas where you can even set up a tent? Someone mentioned lot 34. Is that it? And could it accomodate everyone that sets up tents and/or cooks food?I'm hoping that people with a good knowledge of the physical characteristics of the different parking lots on campus will start reporting their findings on here, and we can all start to determine where the best areas will be for our set-ups long before the first game. ZachTheZip
I'll go through the parking lots one-by-one. Here are my notes;Lot 1: Prepay parking. Parking deck on Spicer Street by the chapel. Most of you know this as the parking deck used for events at the JAR. Access to the large grassy area on corner of Buchtel and Spicer.Lot 2: Priority parking. The parking lot right outside the JAR. A nice spot if you can get it, with a small grass area seperating it and the JAR. Access to the large grassy area on corner of Buchtel and Spicer.Lot 3: GA parking. Alumni center parking. Only 8 spots here.Lot 4: Prioroty parking. Small gravel lot located between Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and Delta Gamma sorority east of the JAR. If you're a priority parking pass holder and like partying with people half your age, this lot is for you. Access to the large grassy area on corner of Buchtel and Spicer.Lot 7: Priority parking. Small gravel lot on corner of Goodkirk and Orchard. Full of holes and trash. You'll need a jeep to get around this one.Lot 8: Priority parking behind Ocasek natatorium. No green space for tailgating here.Lot 9: Prioroty parking. This lot is temporary, soon to be replaced by dorms on Exchange. The best lot if you value a short walk, located right behind the scoreboard.Lot 10: Priority parking behind the fieldhouse. This is the closest lot to the stadium, located on Spicer.Lot 12: GA parking. On corner of Union and Forge. It's a pretty big lot, but it's shared with the Greek Orthodox church. I don't know how kindly they would take to tailgating on the pavement there. Maybe they'll be cool and have a church tailgate party or something.Lot 13: Priority parking. Gravel lot between the JAR and Spicer. Located next to Phi Delta Theta university. Access to the large grassy area on corner of Buchtel and Spicer.Lot 14: GA parking. Paved drive but gravel parking. Located on Buchtel across the street from Olin. This is the closest GA parking spot north of the stadium. No room to tailgate in the actual lot, but there is a large grass area across the street next to Olin.Lot 15: Priority parking. This is the Olin parking lot. Lots of grass to the South and the Northwest. The best priority lot if you're looking to tailgate, period.Lot 18: Student Union parking. Not for gameday parking. Meters only.Lot 19: GA parking. Small paved lot across the street from the Martin University Center. No room for tailgating.Lot 20: GA parking. Very large paved lot on College Street across from the old administration building. Shared with First United Methodist Church. Tailgating on the pavement is a possibility if not too many cars are there.Lot 21: GA parking. Parking for the old Roadway building. There are like 5 spots here, and no room for anything.Lot 22: GA parking. This is the north quad parking lot, behind the Honors dorm. There's some good tailgating spots, but you won't find a place to park your car because of students.Lot 25: GA parking. This is the visitors parking deck underneath Rob's café. No tailgating, and i don't know if you'll be charged to park there.Lot 26: GA parking. North Campus parking deck on Buchtel next to Simmons Hall. Easy access to the North Quad via a skywalk, but that's about it.Lot 27: Residential Parking. This is a gravel lot across from EJ Thomas. You're not parking here without getting a ticket.Lot 28: GA parking. EJ Thomas parking deck. This thing is a maze if you don't park there regularly. There is a nice, fairly large strip of grass between the deck and the railroad tracks, but it's tough to get to if you don't like jumping or climbing concrete walls.Lot 29: GA parking. This lot is paved, and located behind the Polymer Engineering Building in the middle of the groundskeeping area. You probably wouldn't want to tailgate here even if you managed to figure out how to get there.Lot 30: GA parking. New lot located on Market Street where Mr. Hero used to be. Right now it's a dirt hole, so I don't know if it will be ready in time. If it is, you could tailgate here, but it's really far away from the stadium.Lot 32: GA parking. Gravel lot on Fir Hill between Market and Forge. That's about it. You might be able to tailgate here.Lot 34: GA parking. Gravel lot located east of engineering complex. This lot is a good tailgating lot, if you get there early enough to grab a spot.Lot 35: GA parking. Paved lot on Union near lot 32. If there aren't too many cars, tailgating could be possible.Lot 37: GA parking. This is the Schrank parking deck. Nice and close to the stadium, but you can't tailgate.Lot 38: GA parking. Parking lot outside Schrank across the street from McDonalds. This one will fill up the quickest, given it's proximity to the stadium and easy access to Exchange. it may or may not be assimilated into the new parking deck eventually.Lot 39: GA parking. This is the Exchange parking deck. No tailgating areas around it.Lot 41: GA parking. This is the new parking deck on Exchange. Still under construction.Lot 42: GA parking. Located on Wheeler street by Wolf Ledges. This lot is behind Folk Hall, if you're coming from Exchange. Quiet and out of the way if you can commandeer for yourself and a group of friends for a small tailgate.Lot 43: GA parking. Parking lot on wolf ledges by the Turbine building (with the stealth fighter on the side) and by the tracks. No real grass to speak of unless you like tailgating on a 45-degree incline.Lot 44: Residential parking for the townhouses and Grant residence hall.Lot 45: GA parking. Located on Lincoln street across from the Wonder Bread factory. Paved, but not very good for tailgating. I don't even know if you can access it due to construction.Lot 46: Residential parking for Galucci and Exchange dorms.Lot 47: GA parking. This is the Folk Hall parking lot. Fairly large, and you might be able to hold a decent tailgate around the back of the building.Lot 49: GA parking. This is the Polsky parking deck. No tailgating here. Located downtown if you plan on hitting the OBC or Barley House.Lot 50: Non-gameday parking for the Fir Hill Plaza building.Lot 52: Non-gameday parking for the Martin University Center.Lot 54: Handicapped parking. Located between the Chapel and Route 8.Lot 56: GA parking. Very small parking area at entrance to the Buckingham Building across Wolf Ledges from the law building.Lot 57: Non-gameday parking meters outside the JAR.Lot 59: Residential parking for Garson Hall.Lot 60: GA parking. Small parking lot for the Polymer Training Center on Mill and College streets.Lot 61: GA parking. Tiny paved lot by the CBA.Lot 62: GA parking. Gravel lot on Broadway opposite Polsky deck. Somehow I doubt that Old Stone School would allow you to tailgate on their lawn.Lot 66: GA parking. Located on corner of High and Buchtel downtown. Closest spot to the bars, but no tailgating here.Lot 70: GA parking. Quaker Square parking lot on both sides of Mill Street bridge. Very large, probably little amount of cars, seems possible for tailgating to be held on the pavement.Lot 71: GA parking. This is the parking lot for the administrative building. So, here are the parking lots where I think tailgating is possible: lots 14 (across the street by Olin), 12 (if the church lets us use it), 20, 30 (if it gets completed), 32, 34, 35, 42, 47, and 70. There's also the grass square on the corner of Spicer and Buchtel if you're willing to carry your stuff there and back. Please go around and find your own prefered spots, though. These are just my opinions.

ZachTheZip
Dude, that was insane. Nice work! Thanks. I figured that something like that needed to be done to avoid confusion for the first game. We need to remember that we're not the only fans that will use the stadium, either. There will be visiting fans from other teams, as well as high school games and the like. Now if anybody asks, we have something to point them too. I just hope that the university or the Beacon does something similar, and soon.

freddiecoffey
Doesn't the old Central Hower High School have a big parking lot? Does the University own that building yet. I would think that lot could be a prime location for a "tailgate city," and it's a straight shot south through campus to the stadium ... Quickzips
FYI for those of you looking at tailgating in Lot 34. Just last week the entire lot was paved over (much needed, as a law student who parks there regularly I was getting scared that I was going to lose my car in one of the potholes). The entire thing is blacktop now. Parking spaces and drive area. No more gravel parking spaces with paved (if you could even call it that before) drive. You get 30% of gate and concessions for the schools playing that night. You provide your own security during the game.
akronad
Not exactly. U of A keeps all concession monies and when games were played at RB, they kept all parking monies as well. APS keeps gate, but pays will pay in excess of $25,000 for 6 games at Infocision.
