ZachTheZip
No surprises on offense.Andre Jones not doing any kickoff/punt returns surprises me. It's hard to imagine that we have at least four guys who can return better than he did last year.I assume that Bain is being listed as second string NT because of his injury, and that if he can heal he'll take over the starting role. The D-line overall is very deep and very young but experienced. Should be a major strength, barring more injuries.
Buckzip
from goizps.com click meinteresting so see what frosh are cracking the depth chart so far........thoughts? surprises? Some interesting stuff. No Tonga on the depth chart. I thought he would be one of the top 9 dl.No Martin or Torrence. Tuzze is ahead of them.A little surprised that Waller beat out Weaver.Looks like the true freshman o-line will all get to redshirt.Still a little concerned with the safety position. IMHO, we should have left Andre Jones there...A lot of youth in the 2 deep. Makes the future look good as long as the talent comes through. johnnyzip84
There are no HUGE surprises, but a few things stand out to me.1) The 3-3-5 lives, at least for early depth chart purposes. If you'll note, though, Fobbs is slated as the starting Rover. He's quite a bit bigger than those who have played the position for the Zips in the past. This makes me think we're really going to see a 3-4 or at least portions of it.2) With the Tonganator apparently not ready to go, I really like James Harvey at 6'4", 290 LB starting at DE. If he plays as well as he did last year with the extra 15-20 LB of muscle, then he could be really special playing opposite Mondo.3) I'm a little surprised that of all the true FR who are pushing for PT, WR Meriwether and CB Lartey are the ones who are apparently ahead of the pack (no Greenwood?).4) I like having a skill position guy like Sandilands as the holder. Granted Hildreth saved our butts at EMU last year, but Sandilands provides more options.5) The RB slot has Tuzze backing up AA, but I'm sure this is reflecting those few formations that require a FB. Surely Martin and Devoe will see more carries?6) Shane Shead being listed ahead of Joe Rash was not expected in my eyes. I hope this means that Shane has made significant strides to match his relatively high status as a recruit.7) Dan Marcoux must get tremendous leverage to be where he is at 270 LB.8) I'm NOT surprised that JD is still waiting to name a PK between Branko and Igor. I think this will go down to just before the Penn State game. He may even choose to go with the "hot hand" throughout the year. Or he might choose one for long FG's and one for short FG's.Those are my 1 1/2 cents.
Captain Kangaroo
I don't care what the depth chart says...look out for Torrence and LaFrance. They're both looking great.
Zipmeister
I don't care what the depth chart says...look out for Torrence and LaFrance. They're both looking great. So what about the Tonganator. As I recall he was the second best guy named Tonga available at the time we offered. More hype than substance? skip-zip
Observations/Surprises1) What ever happened to that giant transfer OL from Minnesota? I stood next to that guy once, and I was scared. 2) A freshman TE. 3) Andre Jones won't be a return man...with his speed. I'll never forget listening to that WMU game a couple of years ago on the radio. One of French's best calls ever (besides the Alcorn field goal in '92).4) Bain not being a starter. Although...I think that's been addressed here.5) A FR (Wagner) starting at Grant's old spot at LB. Although, I've heard a lot of good things about him.6) Carter might be sharing time in the secondary with Cobham? I think Jalil is maybe our best DB (close race with Graham).7) I thought Lemon was going to get the start at Rover....I guess that's not the case. UADavid
1) Jason Sekinger -He played special teams last year on the kick protect team. At 6'9" they should put him in the middle of the kick block team too if he wasn't there already. Good guy. A bit slow.
gozips19
surprised yet happy to see all of the youth on the two deep on the o line. what happened to estrada?the battles at lb are interesting as some names that haven't been talked about are now on the two deep.i don't discount your statement about devo and lafrance but i was hoping lafrance would get a red shirt. the team is really deep at wr. now, if he will get miller's snaps or if jones is still having knee issues then it makes more sense. lartey will be the man in a year! little nervous about the safety pos. seems like they can't get a grasp for roles back there. I have high hopes for our FR long snapper. And we'll need to make our PAT's to eke out the win against PSU
tim123
I just heard that Matt Barkley a true freshmen is going to start for USC, I just wonder maybe we need to look at our underclasmen at QB, it's not like we've been blinded by brillance. RACER
i think the key to the penn state game is our defensive line.we have to be able to stop the run.im sure penn state will pound the ball between the tackles at the start of the game, and then throw some play action at akron.we seem to have on paper some good size on the d-line.hopefully bain cann give us some snaps also.if our defense cannot stop the run then we have very little chance of winning the game.if we can stop the run then we force pen state to throw the ball alott.i don't think this early in the year penn state wants to throw alott;especailly against a non big ten team.if we can get the ballback without letting them control our offense should be able to score some points on them.they have a brand new secondary which we should be able to take advantage of. Dr Z
I just heard that Matt Barkley a true freshmen is going to start for USC, I just wonder maybe we need to look at our underclasmen at QB, it's not like we've been blinded by brillance.Your comparing the USC QB position to ours. Talk about apples and oranges. A USC QB has to just not lose the game, an Akron QB has to go out and win the game. A USC QB has multiple #1 nfl draft picks on his defense, we run the 3-3-5 because we can't recruit enough DLs to come to Akron. IMO we need experience on the field. ZachTheZip
You would think that the LA Harbor people would be better about that. I understand when some small-town high school guidance councilor screws up the process, but this is inexcusable.

johnnyzip84
Well of course Bowser came from LA Harbor also, so you'd think this is just a speed bump along the Tonganator Way.
