Time to find a true QB

I just watched BYU knock off #3 Oklahoma. Max Hall had an unbelievable drive, 70+ yards and it lead to a touchdown. BYU has had some great QB's in the past couple years: Max Hall, John Beck, etc.... Nearly EVERY year they are competing and knocking off BCS schools. Same thing with all these great teams having great QB's: Florida- Tim Tebow, OU- Sam Bradford, Texas- Colt McCoy, and others. All of these QB's have smarts. The smarts allow them to use their arm, or their speed, or their accuracy correctly. No, this is not a JD or Jacquemain bashing thread. I respect and appreciate all they do. I just think it's time to get a true QB. Football is becoming more about speed again, even though size helps. OSUcks has Pryor, Penn State has Clark, and Florida has Tebow. Speed isn't everything and Bradford and McCoy are showing that also. Jacquemain doesn't have the smarts these guys have, he doesn't have the speed or arm they have. I know we aren't recruiting on the same level as these schools, but I think we can do better than what we have.Now I would like to see what Jacquemain can do this year, because I do think he has improved, but for the future, it would be nice to know who our QB is for 4 years. Now let's go ZIPS! Fix everything that needs to be fixed and take care of Morgan State.

I've seen several who have said that Jacq has improved, but I don't see how we can judge that to be the case so far. I know they were eaten up as a team yesterday, but is there anyone here who can say that they were impressed by anything he did on the field yesterday? When he had time and open receivers he overthrew, underthrew, held the ball too long, did all of the things that a senior 3 year starter shouldn't be doing anymore. Those were on top of his staggering lack of foot speed. Like I said in an earlier post, this level of play is completely out of synch with where UA sees the program going, and with the level of investment that has been made in the team. I agree with you about QB play. The local fans, not the ZNation fans who will show regardless, the others who UA needs to fill this beautiful new stadium so that they can meet their financial obligations for it, those fans will simply not show up if this is the kind of Zips team, and QB, that plays on that gorgeous turf. No way, no how. Jacq may even prove to be a competent starter in MAC play, we may even earn the pathetic 7 wins likely needed for JD to keep his job, but it's still not good enough. Until local fans start to see D-1 football product that begins to approximate what we've come to expect from the BYUs, the Utahs, the Pitts, the MAC-era Marshalls, they simply will not buy tickets and show up. And Lilroodude you're right, a good-looking QB with some flush and dazzle must be a big part of that.

Gonna have to respectfully disagree with some things and add my own perspective in little blurts:Penn State had a starting lineup loaded with new players looking to make an impact. They did.

Walt Harris has coached against PSU 4 other times (if I remember pregame from Frenchy and Stams correctly). He beat them while at Pitt. If it was felt that we needed to be able to run against them, then we needed to try to run. I don't disagree with those who said the play calling was unimaginative but you gotta run to keep pressure off the OLine and the QB. Our inability to block the run had an effect on CJ's performance.

Also gotta say that the Zips crowd at the Barley House was far below what I expected. There were empty seats and I don't call 30 to 40 Zips fans a major accomplishment.

Given the chance to regroup at half, I think the Zips acquitted themselves well in the second half. Came within an eyelash of beating a top ten team 14-0 in the second half.

There is no way to duplicate the speed and talent of an opponent like PSU in a training camp situation.

Disappointed not to see Bain, Tonga, Torrence or Henderson in action. It would have helped, IMO.

We are a MAC team and when that season arrives, I think CJ has more than enough to help us, given improved running game.My thoughts. Feel free to disagree.

How about if I agree? The league is terrible. CJ is enough to win seven games the remainder of the season.

Although the PSU quarterback threw for a lot of yards, I was not all that impressed with his play either. Lots of under and overthrown balls. There was one play in the second quarter where he had a guy wide open near the goal line. He put so much air under the ball, that it allowed Miguel Graham (I believe) to catch up to it an make a play on it. If Jacquamain had Bowser that wide open, It would have been six points for sure. If our OL plays up to its expectations the rest of the way, we should not have anything to worry about. The Zips will not face another defensive front seven even close to that the rest of the season.

I never said anything about CJ not being able to get the job done this year, all I meant to do was say that I think we need to find a better QB for the years to come. The Zips had their moments yesterday, they looked pretty decent against a top 10 team.

There are a lot of other big BSC schools that will get beat by a good scrambling quarterback. PSU however, is not one of them.I keep hearing how good Nicely is too, but I have no idea as I have never seem him play. Maybe rumors are true, or maybe it's because everybody always loves the QB on the bench more than the starter.

Rodgers didn't seem to want to pull it down too early yesterday IMO. He has the mobility advantage, and CJ11 appears to have the accuracy advantage. I don't think we're going to find our "True QB" this year so we'll have to make the best of it.

Rodgers will get plenty of playing time on Saturday. I think we'll have decided on who gets the majority of snaps by week 4. I would like to see Nicely redshirt if possible.

Agreed, and a whole buch of those passing yards were a result of those lateral to slightly backward passes at the line of scrimmage they kept using. The fact that often times the receiver then broke a couple of tackles to rack up yardage after the catch really boosted the passing yards for the QB. In that way his big numbers were a little misleading.

Nobody on the offensive side of the ball showed up in the 1st half. Anderson2 was HORRIBLE (3 penalties and a "get the QB killed" missed block). If Shuford and Tuzze are our RBs..yikes. Allen needs to get healthy and we better hope that Torrence or Martin do something. Jacq is not going to be anything more than solid-to-good...he needs help.

My neighbor has been telling me about D'orazio from Cuyahoga Heights and I'm really intrigued to watch him play. Apparently they run the veer and he can throw when he needs to. He could be the dual threat QB of the future you are suggesting we need.

If Nicely needs time in the weight room, it ain't much. He physically looks like a college QB right NOW. I have yet to see him throw a pass in practice, but I watched him closely during warm ups Saturday. He has an over the top release and it looks strong and quick to me. I am anxious to see him play next year. I am only basing this on ten minutes of warm ups and the "eye ball" test, but I'm excited to see what he can do.I'm not ready to get that excited on evaluating the QB's after one game in Happy Valley. If you had images of those defensive lineman in your head like Rodgers and CJ did, I would be willing to bet your performance would suffer also.

You can go to you tube and search Patrick Nicely footbal records and the head coach refers to his work ethic in the weight room so it seems to be he's a gym rat. I googled his name and it's pretty impressive stuff we should be pumped up to get a player of his caliber. I'm pumped about this coming weekend at the Info. Where,s the tailgating taking place?

I'd love to come tailgate, but it will be later in the year. Indiana I hope...if not, Can't State.When I say CJ is enough to win, it isn't a glowing endorsement....
