After watching highlights of this year....

After watching highlights from each game this year, i see a group of guys (aside of 2 or 3 of them) that have pretty much given up on the season. Since when do you have a division 1 defensive back flying to make a tackle with his head down. Who the hell are you going to tackle with your head looking at the ground. Another thing i see and it makes me very sick to the stomach is all of the arm tackles that are being attempted. Whatever happened to college players playing good sound football, and using technique. You dont try to arm grab him and pull him down, You hit him and wrap him up. The final thing i seen in this video is a group of offensive lineman who were the best in the MAC last year, but this year they just dont have it. In this video you see Nicely and Rodgers getting pressure on every play. If there are any players from the team who see this post............... we as fans challenge you to step it up. Lineman, put a helmet on somebody and block until the dang whissle please. Defensive players, Hit and wrap. You dont have to make the highlight hit every game... make the sure tackle. You guys are better then you have been playing, so starting this week against syracuse, prove that you arent the laughing stock of not only the mac, but of the nation! If you agree with the things that i have said, make sure to post your opinions here, and if any of the players read this hopefully they will take it to heart and go out an kick some syracuse ass!

If I was a player I would not come here unless I was allowed to post. Seeing all the uninformed opinions (not saying people here are stupid, in anyway, just that they can't possibly know the inside deal) and not being able to respond to them would kill me.I could be wrong, but I highly doubt your thread is going to be read by a player who will take it to heart, and suddenly be motivated to give more than they already would have.

are they not aloud to go to an respond to sites like this? If so, i havent heard of that before. You never know...sometimes it takes someone "smacking it into you" before you realize you need to do somthing bout it. I just hope that they can turn this year around.

I sincerely hope that any player regardless of team would ignore pretty much everything on these kinds of boards. If they want to have a screener let them know when something nice has been said about them, great, but I hope they personally avoid these kinds of boards like the plague. Very little good would come from it. These are fan boards and we're allowed to be fanaticists on here like we should be but for a kid who's giving everything he has and still coming up short doesn't need to see the kind of treatment they'd get on here. I don't think there is a ban on athletes looking at these kinds of sites but I'd hope common sense would tell them to stay away (until they graduate and then we welcome them to be fanatics like the rest of us :)).

im not bashing them at all. I personally have friends on the team. Im just in shock by how they have been playing. The worst part if like i said, the offensive line and the DB's (tackling) i think that this team if they were to use technique, and get back to the basics, they would be alot better off and their record would reflect it.

Timmy.... You have either been drinking the Akron Kood-Aid or watched a different O-line last year. Our O-line was at times pathetic. In several games (Buffalo, Temple, Cinci) they could neither run nor pass block. They were never the best line in the MAC. That was just wishful thinking. But I will grant you this, whatever they were last year, they are many times worse this year. Fundamentally they are bad and an embarrassment to the many past athletes who were proud to call themselves Zip linemen.

I'm sooooooooooooooooooo glad and pulllllleeeeezed I gave up my season FB tix & got Soccer season tix! I ignore FB and pay attention to SOCCER! I'm not happy that the FB Zips are doing so poorly, it's just that the season is even worse than I thoughr it would be. SO SAD, but when you continue to hold on to a <.500 coach things happen. We are getting physically beat up/

i totally disagree about the team.i am not a big jd fan.the last two games the team did play hard.i don't know how you could say the guys quit playing hard.if they were not playing hard akron would have been beaten 70-0.these last two games at least we had a chance to win both of them.we have problems with special teams, and play calling that are the difference between winning, and losing games.i have never seen a team like akron give up so many, 3rd and long plays, and the red offense is terrible.that does not mean that the guys are not playing hard.i still think there is talent on this team to win some mac games.i am not saying we will win the next six.the younger guys are getting pt now,and this will help the next coach whoever that may be.i think if we can get the right coach akron can turn the program around quickly.also they need to stop scheduling any teams that won't give us a home/home.right now we have no business playing any bcs teams.

Someone posted video on another thread from the ohio game. If you wach that video you will see an offensive line letting their QB get eatten alive. You will see a defensive backfield who is attempting to make arms tackles, with their heads down. Like i said, there are 2 or 3 on each side of the ball that look like they are still giving it their all, the rest seem to be flat an not caring. I do remember a DB getting a few INT's in the ohio game, and he is one of the players i was talking about not giving up. along with wagner and sewell. The rest of the Defense didnt look like they were giving much effort at all. like i said, i hope that they can turn it around this week and get a W. and also 72 roo. i was refering to the minimal amount of sacks that they gave up.... and they also blocked for a back that rushed for over 1000 yards. During one stretch of the season he aveaged more yards rushing then any back in the ncaa.

I dont think there is anyone giving up on this team, they may not make the best decisions, and may be frustrated, but they played two decent football teams the last few weeks and played them both pretty well and both could have turned out the other way pretty easily. We also had a kid play half a game with multiple fractures in his arm, that's not giving up, I'm sorry.Even in the awful Indiana game our guys fought back after a terrible start, the d forced a field goal that kept the game close (10-0) and did their part to give us a lead late in the first half before our bad pass protection and Rodgers shaky decisions led to implosion.

all that has been said in this topic, everyone needs to realize that we are out 13 scholarship players this season due to injury or other reasons. take any other team in the country, take away their top two qbs, start a true freshman in their place and take away 11 other scholarship players, which are most likely starters and see if they contend. Not many could. I agree this seaso sucks, but can you really be that surprised by all the missing parts that we have. its not completely JDs fault.

If you watch that video you will realize it was the 20 good plays that Ohio had, in a 19-7 victory that should very well have been a loss if not for Turnover Machine # 5. It was put together by Ohio, to make Ohio look good. It wasn't a game highlight video, it was an Ohio highlight video. If you are going to say you watched "highlights" of the season and "came to a conclusion" make sure you actually watch the films that show every play that Akron had, not just the ones that Ohio wants it's recruits to see.Talk about an uninformed opinion.:rolleyes:

I agree zippy, the Ohio game was within reach if not for the turnovers and special teams kicking us in the ass. The Buffalo game was another turnoverfest but could have been pulled out despite having some crucial referee calls that changed the game. I don't see the team giving up at all. They need to take it personally now. Go Zips!!

As far as arm tackling is concerned, players are now coached to attempt arm tackles to try and strip the ball from the opponent. Although I have seen it accomplished, I have also seen it more often than not become a bust. And I have vieewed this in high school, college and pro games. I am of the persuasion that I would rather see a runner wrapped up for a 2-3 yd. gain rather than get 6-8 yds. because a defender was trying to strip the ball. But that is my opinion, and I am not a coach. Just a fan.

I've been noticing in the games so far that many of the "missed" tackles appeared to be the result of the first Zips defensive player to reach the ball carrier trying to strip the ball. I have to believe this is a Zips defensive strategy from the coaches and not exclusively a case of many Zips defensive players making decisions on their own.Like everything else these days, statistics are analyzed to the point that the overall value of trying to strip the ball vs. wrapping up the legs in a tackle must be generally known. Hypothetically, for example, if going for the ball strip results in an average of 2.7 extra yards of gain for each missed strip vs. fumble recoveries on 9.8 percent of the plays, then it's up to the coaching staff to decide which strategy may benefit the team more in the final score. When a team is winning consistently, things like this don't come under close scrutiny by the fans, who are too busy celebrating victories. But when a team is losing consistently, every strategy comes under a microscope by disgruntled fans.

I agree, you cannot rely on a highlight video to make your assumption on how much effort the team put into that game. Sometimes good players make others look stupid and their players did that a few times to us(all caught on video).Btw i do disagree on one thing, #5 is not a turnover machine....he is a turnover FACTORY.

Yes, i did mention that game specifically. But when i say i have seen highlights of the season i mean i have watched more then one game. I have been to all of the home games, and have watched others on television. Im not by any means basing my OPINION on just the Ohio game. I seen the same arm tackling in the indiana game, and also the central michigan game. Why not have the first man to make contact with the offensive player stand him up, while the other defensive players are going for the strip. The way they are playing it now they have the first guy going for the strip and he is missing the player, and their getting 5,6,7 extra yards. If they would have the first man to make contact hit an wrap him up, they stop him with the minimal gain, and then have the other defenders come after the ball.

the turnover by torrence was total b.s. there was no way the ref could have seen when the ball came out.even the buffalo announcers said they could not see when the ball came out.they showed different angles, and you could not see any prts of the ball.that was one a few terrible call agianst us.especially the offensive interference call.

BTW---we get your point about Rodgers as you continue to bring it up at any and every opportunity. It's done and he is done for the season. Please find something new to squack about. We get that you like Nicely as do I. But continuing to slam Rodgers doesn't make Nicely any more or less than he is. BTW--- Did you happen to notice the many offensive adjustments the coaches made right down to who was calling the plays as soon as Nicely began to play. Would have been nice if they had done that sooner. At least we came close to Buffalo which Im not sure what that says.
