UAZipster0305
from the front page of ESPN.com...http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4748408ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Charlie Frye waited more than a year for another opportunity to start in the NFL. JaMarcus Russell may find himself in a similar boat.Frye was picked to start at quarterback over former top overall draft pick Russell when the Oakland Raiders visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday.Coach Tom Cable said Wednesday that Russell will be his No. 2 quarterback, with the newly signed J.P. Losman third."As the coach I want to do what I think is best for this team, and that's Charlie Frye," Cable said. "It gives us the best opportunity to win. You watch Charlie every day and his preparation, he just certainly deserves the opportunity."Frye has not played this year and worked strictly with Oakland's scout team. His last start was for Seattle on Oct. 12, 2008, against the Green Bay Packers when he threw for 84 yards and two touchdowns.Since then, Frye has been trying to revive his career, signing with the Raiders in the offseason and serving as the team's emergency quarterback through the first 13 games."It will be good to get back out there with the offense and run some plays that aren't on cards," Frye joked. "I've got a lot of fire in me. I've been that crutch and that supportive guy all season, so now it's my turn to be the fiery leader."The move raises serious questions about Russell, who started the first nine games of the season before being benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski before Oakland's Nov. 22 home game against the Cincinnati Bengals.Gradkowski led the Raiders to a pair of stirring fourth quarter comebacks against the Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers but tore the MCL in both of his knees last week against the Washington Redskins. After replacing Gradkowski in the second half against the Redskins, Russell passed for just 74 yards and failed to move the offense consistently while being booed by the crowd at the Oakland Coliseum."I think that's the whole point here, his struggles are out there," Cable said. "It's on film and in the game and those sort of things. Everybody is working to try and help him get better all the time. He's certainly giving back to that, as best he can, and at some point you hope to, as I always say, have a breakthrough and move forward."Russell was unavailable for comment but said before the game against the Redskins that he still feels he is the Raiders quarterback of the future. But after getting skipped over in favor of Frye, there's increasing speculation Oakland may be looking to sever its ties with Russell, who signed a six-year contract in 2006 that included more than $30 million in guarantees."It's too early for all that," Cable said. "Right now we want to find a way to win these last three games. At this point, this is what we feel, that I feel, is the best thing for us."Frye impressed Oakland's coaches with attention to detail in meetings and practice. Cable said Frye is comparable to Gradkowski in terms of mobility and style."They have great command, they study all the time, they work, they're ultra-prepared," Cable said. "He was here all day yesterday, even before we talked about what we were going to do. That's typical of him. In Charlie Frye's world there is no off day."Oakland chose not to put Gradkowski on injured reserve and is hopeful he can return to the starting lineup soon."It's basically day to day, week to week, but I'm definitely trying to get back for the Cleveland game [on Dec. 27]," Gradkowski said. "That's in my mind, and we'll work hard this week and try to get well."The Raiders signed free agent Losman, who is a former first-round pick of the Buffalo Bills and most recently led the Las Vegas Locomotives to the first United Football League championship. My wife makes fun of me periodically for still having it.So, you're saying the CF attitude is spouse-enhanced? I don't know about enhanced, but reinforced is a better word. Her opinions of the MAC are similar to mine. She went to Miami for her undergrad and UofA for MBA so she has seen the MAC from two different views. She has always worked and has held very good job so she looks at things from a pure business standpoint. I own my own business, but she is a better business person than I am. I'd never tell her, but she is much smarter. When I first started to have doubts about Frye, I didn't say a word to anyone. Shortly after that, my wife would make comments like, "If this guy is so good, how come he hasn't won many games in the MAC?" or "This league is terrible. He should have more wins against it." or "Any QB that is worth anything in the MAC wins a championship regardless of what is around him."If anyone remembers, my wife is the one who said after the UofA vs. Miami weeknight game a couple years ago that ended in a final score of something like 3-0, "Being commissioner of the MAC would be like being VP of Marketing for Dollar General. You could convince someone to come to your store once, but once they saw the crap you were selling they wouldn't come back." It's the perfect analogy for how hard the MAC is to sell and why people don't go to MAC games. It doesn't take a football expert to see the MAC is selling crap. I wish I was smart enough to come up with the Dollar General comment.

GP1
Damn! I got to start my own business, so I can spend all day sending zingers to the assorted hangers-on at ZipsNation.org. Then the rest of the day, I'll debate the letters to the editor at Ohio.com! Isn't it awesome owning your own business? I had always worked for large companies and did very well. The Koch Industries purchase of Georgia Pacific alone made the time at Georgia Pacific worth it because of not only my stock options, but more importantly the business philosophy at Koch. Charles Koch is brilliant and everyone should read his book The Science of Success. Later I went to work for a Berkshire Hathaway company and I knew it was time to leave when I would sit in my home office with the phone on mute and laugh out loud at the people in the corporate HQ durning conference calls. The people at the corporate HQ were hiding behind the company logo and disguising their incompetence behind a Six Sigma certification. They were absolute fools. They would spend six months putting cause & effect tables together about decisions a sane person could make in five minutes. If anyone out there wants to start their own business, grab your balls and do it!!! I've worked harder than I ever have before and I don't feel like it is work. I can't wait for tomorrow. I even know I'm going to wake up with a hangover, and I can't wait until tomorrow. It's nothing that a little Advil can't take care of and honestly, I'm done for 2009.In a year when most people are worrying about losing their job, I don't worry for a second about paying the bills or what would happen if I lost my job. Tough economic times are when you can break the bank if you are smart about it. Go out and break the bank! History is on your side. A lot of you have received a great education from a great school. Go out there and do something with it. Be different and do something different.Go The University of Akron!

Dave in Green
Self-confidence is especially important for those in sales or who own their own business. Standing in front of a mirror, looking yourself in the eye and telling yourself you're the greatest is not a bad strategy for building one's self-esteem. Taking it public, on the other hand, can produce more mixed results. While a few may side with the reflection in the mirror, most will be either amused, bored or annoyed by the exaggerated posturing. But even if met with substantial public ridicule, disdain or indifference, one can always go back to the ever reliable mirror for a positive-reinforcement session. RatherBeAZIP
So where is this thread going? GP1 are you saying that you're business is going to be able to afford to hire Charlie after his football career is over?
jaycevs
So Charlie Frye should buy his own NFL team then, and avoid working for incompetent franchises like Cleveland and Oakland.Seriously though, what line of work are you all self employed in? I think a forum for contacts and business/etc discussion could be beneficial, especially to us recent grads. I just finished at UA in May, but am older after going to Akron part time for most of my career as a student and working full time. I was there shortly before Landscape for Learning, so I saw the changes this University made, and also the changes in education from blackboards and researching textbooks to internet resources and powerpoint for almost every class. Being able to experience that I think is somewhat unique. Anyway, I am an Accountant, and as of today I finally have an Accounting job in this rough economy, only took 7 months.Go Zips! GoZips
Over the years I have started at least five businesses. One still exists and is owned by othersbecause we split our partnership up and sold out. Others died a quick death or languished. Hardwork, long hours, determination, great product or service are no guarantee. Its exhilarating, exasperating, nerve wracking and a thrill.Biggest piece of advice I can give is be sure to over capitalize. Falling short on workingcapital is probably the biggest business killer.I "retired" for the fourth or fifth time back in September. Spurred by GP1's comments Iobtained a vendor's license today so I can pursue an new interest. I have decided to turn ahobby (of sorts) into a business. Fortunately I am well capitalized. My pursuit requires a heavyoutlay of capital. This is no spur of the moment decision. I have been teetering on making this move for a coupleof months. Not having a vendor's license caused me to miss out on profitable opportunities. Now I have to have the nerve (balls) to take the risks of capital outlay.
