What will you tell Tom Wistrcill?

UA Fan

I think it's a great idea .. and I think it's nice the way that Tom continues to make an effort to keep the Nation up to date and communicate. Failure to do this was a common critique of past administrations, IIRC.Keep up the good work Tom & I second CK's recommendation:Go find us a winner!Go Zips! B) B) B)

I like it that he sent out the video. I tried to respond but received an error that my message was too long! I should have bottom-lined it by saying that UA needs to pay a serious and respectable football coach a serious and respectable salary to expect serious and respectable results.

would it be worth it for the smart people of ZNO to collaborate and come up with a few good recommendations to send on behalf of ZNO? I just see this as a good opportunity to get the zipsnation name out there to someone high up.
We are making a youtube video and sending it to him.

But I imagine the Great GP-1 has already completed his. Do we need to redunditate our leader? :P

I too like the fact that he reaches out to the fans with Youtube. It does make you feel like your opinion matters, though in the end it isn't really a factor. Personally, I hope he isn't listening to the fans as most of us dedicate the vast majority of our efforts into things other than building a D1 program. Leave those decisions to the people who have the background, time, and resources to do the job correctly.

When it comes to selecting a head coach, I think the fan input should be minimal. The AD needs to make the call. Where a fan's input would help TW is by providing an objective look at the team's history. AD's come and go. Coaches come and go. But fans are here for decades. And most fans are objective...not University "shills/lifers." If you want to know about Paul Winters' offense, I can tell you. Other fans can too. Those in the existing UA Athletic's Dept? They have very little clue who Winters is.When it comes to the "fan experience" (tailgating, amenities, etc) the fan input should ABSOLUTELY be considered. Too many admisistrators with fabulous advanced college degrees have absolutely no clue what it takes to make Joe Akron excited about UA sports. They think they do...but they don't.It is a bit scary that TW is a first time AD. Looking at Mike Thomas...as great an AD as he is...he took a flier on a relatively unknown position coach with his first hire, and the results were marginal at best. For football hire #2 he went the route of a finding guy with successful head coaching experience (Kelly). That was a home run. Thomas cut his teeth with hires at UA, and learned from it. I hope TW can skip the teeth-cutting. Taking a gamble on a guy short on experience, but with killer interview skills, could be devastating. We need a winner.

I like the points you make here regarding relative experience, Cap'n. But it's funny (to me) how many different opinions we get on ZN when evaluating the EFFECTIVENESS of Winters' offense at UA, objective or not. We all have different perspectives I guess.I asked Tom if Chuck Martin is under consideration :lol: I figured, why not ask a direct question related to the coaching search and see if I even get a response.

I sent Mr. Wistrcill an email a couple of days ago describing the kind of guy that I would like to see come in. Tonight, at midnight no less, I received a very nice response from Tom. Not just a rubber stamp thanks, yada, yada, yada, but a personal response to the genuine questions and concerns that I have about the situation. While I am quite aware that my imput is minimal at best, I can't even begin to say how impressed I am that he has taken the time to really read our emails and address the concerns of Zip fans. I have faith that he will make the right call and we just might get this thing turned around sooner than some may think.Well done Mr. Wistrcill !

+1! I received a response to my question about Chuck Martin and Tom simply said that he was among those "under consideration".

yeah, I'm pretty sure he knew he was getting rid of JD a while ago and began the search after he made up his mind.

I really don't care if he made his mind up or not already (which I think he might). I think it is pretty cool that he (or somebody) is personally answering everybody's email. It makes you feel like you are part of the process. I think it was Rasor who had a poll on his blog that asked what you would like to see out of the new AD. I believe "more marketing" was the answer. PS If he does have his mind already made up, his (or whomever) answer to my email indicates that I will be happy with his hire.Rump, why do all of your posts read so angry. Relax, watch a soccer game. B)

Exactly my thoughts Dr Z and I think that you can be assured that TW is answering these himself. In my response there was a fact stated of a personal nature that only TW would know.It is not about the choice itself. NO we are not going to make the choice for TW. It is the fact that Mr. Wistrcill has made an effort to reach out to all Zip fans that is impressive, and using Youtube was a great way to do it. This gentleman is probably immersed in his job like never before yet finds the time to do this and answer fan emails at midnight.I really couldn't give a damn of what some of the negative guys here think or even it Tom indeed already has his choice selected. It's all about making the fans feel involved in the process and finding a method to make as personal contact with us that is possible. This is the stuff that builds bonds between a new AD and his fan base, especially important coming off of a season like that. I give TW much credit for going the extra mile at a time when it was needed the most.At least for now I will choose to give the benifit of the doubt to an AD that puts his face out there over a guy that sits behind a keyboard calling himself rumplesomething. If I am wrong, so be it.Carry on people, I'm a basketball guy anyway.

I've got to agree. He's reaching out to the fans, which is good PR and I'm glad he recognizes that. The youtube postings are part of that, and its great that he's responding to messages. But, realistically, they are going to hire who they are going to hire. Maybe I'm being too cyncial, but I would say that fan input is going to play about 0% in their decision.

Rumplebreathmintz is so angry about the whole JDB changeout that my new theory is that Rumplebreathmintz is either:1) JDB himself2) Family of JDB3) JDB's lover4) JDB's Golden Retriever (who has learned to speak English kinda AND can type)5) Player/coach/somehow connected to JDB on such a personal level that it didn't bother him that JDB couldn't win games to save his life

I'm not sure anyone here really believes TW is accepting their input to help make his decision. Like others have said, I'm simply pleased that he asked.
