Of course they're denying. Cinci and Louisville denied to the very day the announcement happened.

Read the Missouri response. They say they haven't received an invitation, but they have discussed expansion "internally". It means there has been contact, but nothing official that can be announced.

Things are looking up for Akron then. They haven't received an invitation, but they have discussed expansion "internally".

  • 4 weeks later...

Bump.

It is sounding more and more like the big landscape shift is right around the corner. With the Big 12 reportedly issuing ultimatums to Nebraska and Mizzou, and the PAC-10 getting into the picture, the next two weeks could be very interesting indeed. Administrators at Kansas, K-State, Baylor and Iowa State have to be pretty nervous right now.

Those four schools have released press statements, all basically saying that their fate is in others' hands but that they remain committed to the Big 12. If they're the only ones left, they have to immediately add at least 5 teams who have played together in the same conference for the past several years to meet the NCAA definitions of a conference. Otherwise they lose auto-bids to any NCAA tournaments in any sport, like what happened to the MAC in soccer last year.

From the article:

"I am comfortable," Beebe said as meetings wrapped up. "There's still a process we're going through but based on the conversations we had I think we're in a very good position."

He would not discuss how the process will keep the Big 12 intact.

"The process that has been set is firm. But I'm not going to engage in what that is," he said.

He has got nothing but a firm process. Whatadouche.

My thoughts

1) Kansas - will be fine.... NIx Baylor and they go to the Pac16.... they could also fit in the Bigger10, SEC... and the new MWC which is set to replace the defunct Big12!

2) Given that i see an interesting game of dominoes lining up! Starting in the East the Bigger10 gets the ball rolling and teams/conferences begin to fall.... it quickly heads west where the Pac16 makes its' move!... Heading back the MWC does it's thing, filling the vaccum leaving a few disjointed teams from the Big12 and WAC waving in the breeze. Limitations force them to make thier move along with the Big East who in addition to the b10 will probably get raided by the SEC and/or ACC (this is if things progress neatly and they won't, but everyone will pretend to be happy, just as they say they feel secure now) Result, C-USA is tore apart much like the Big 12 (mainly western teams) and the Eastern remnants move quickly to form a new conference. At this point what the Bigger10 does now filters down to the MAC..... The Zips could win in this game or lose big! With recent investments and improvements i think we are as prepared as possible! But know this the MAC will be affected IMHO!

Akron will lose big in this bargain. Akron is one of the sorta kinda haves/nots and is about to become one of the major HAVE-NOTS in college football. Teams like most in the MAC are about to become way, way outside the mega conferences that will start to form in the coming weeks and months. There is already marginal interest paid to mid-major sports, but imagine how yawn-worthy the MAC will be once the B10, PAC-10 and others go mega. I just cannot see any way that any of this nonsense will be good in any way for this program. Years from now we'll be lamenting the fact that UA built the Info and had no idea what a gigantic waste of time and money it will have been.

Please, please let me be WAY off base, but MAC (and UA) football is about to become puny and irrelevant. Get ready to vomit very soon when our OSWho buddies are chattering about the awesome teams that their most awesome conference added to become one of the megas.

I think you are spot on. It's hard to believe the MAC could be any more irrelevant than it already is, but just when you think things can't get any worse, they do. The only way to salvage any dignity for the MAC is for it to drop to I-AA and have a team competing for a championship every year. The Zips could be that team. Instead, we are happy to get our asses kicked by BCS schools three times a year and play in a crappy conference.

If realignment does not happen AND the NCAA does not accept the Great GP1's proposal of separating D-1A, the top 30 teams should leave the NCAA and start their own league. There is already an NAIA, why not another type of league? This could be a good thing for college sports as the destruction of the NCAA would be a good thing and this would destroy the NCAA.

I'd give my left leg to see the MAC drop its bottom feeders and pick up a few good schools that will be left in the dust. Realign the conference, and actually make a serious run at become a good conference.

But that would take a commissioner with half a brain and university presidents with half a pair.

Yep this is nothing but bad for us, with conferences going mega, out of conference games will practically be unnecessary, and if a school does decide to play an OCC you can guarantee that they will be looking for cupcakes.

*insert the beating of a dead horse* And as far as which conference is better Conference USA or the MAC, this will be answered shortly, lets see which schools will get plucked from their affliations...Toledo or Memphis, BGSU or Southern Miss, Akron or SMU, East Carolina or Central Michigan, Houston or Buffalo, Central Florida or Can't, Marshall or Miami of Ohio, Tulsa or Eastern Michigan.....you get my drift.

I agree with your first point. If we had any hope of being a power one day wayyyy down the road, this puts the skids to that.

I disagree with your second point though. IMO a winning exciting team properly marketed would sell BIG TIME in this area. It doesn't matter who we play. Reference the Akron Aeros. Plus, the Zips play football and we know what football means in this area.

If the Aeros can play Altoona and New Brittain and rank among the top minor league clubs in attendance, a well run football program could do it too.

But when you have UA marketing, and the results and sideshows we had last year, fuggetaboutit.

I was at the Aeros game last night. Hudson Little League brought about 300 people. The Norton Band brought about 200 people. And there were probably about 150 random people milling about.

If you took away the freebie tickets, the Aeros would have drawn about 150 people on a beautiful June night.

I can't look at one game, on a week night, middle of a 6 game home stand, 71 home games, and say this region will not support a quality football program.

Summit County had the only profitable indoor soccer franchise, there were SRO nights. The Aeros draw extremely well. NEOhio broke Arena Football attendance records. We had 400+ straight sell-outs at the Jake. You put a good product on the field, sell it right, people will come. Lots of them.

If these people will pay to see the Wichita Wings, New Brittain Rock Cats, or Grand Rapids Rampage, you don't need BCS opponents to draw in fans to see a quality team. In the Rubber Bowl, that would have been a tough sell. In the Info? It's just what we needed for a venue. Which is the jist of the message I was answering in the first place...

Those who truly appreciate irony must be hoping that the Colorado move to the PAC and the anticipated Nebraska move to the Big 10 end the conference affiliation shifting for the year. If it did, the Big 10 would have 12 teams and the Big 12 would have 10 teams.

Personally, I'm perplexed. For most of my adult life I have been a BIG Nebraska fan and for most of my life I have hated the Big 10. Someone should have consulted me about this whole situation.
