Z.I.P.
Yes!!! This takes a WHOLE lot of the sting away from Sunday! Go Zips!!!I read the Beacon article. Now I'm wondering...He was given a new 5-year deal, but did anyone actually HEAR him say he was staying put -- is there a statement from our coach? You see, I have little faith in anything I read in the paper, especially when it comes to supposed good news for Akron area sports teams. Please let it be true. It will bring great holiday tidings. meatwad
This just made my night. I was so freaking nervous that he was leaving. It would have been quite a disappointment if he had been introduced as DCU's next head coach. I can go to sleep much happier.

Even if he leaves its going to be very expensive to buy him out. Or,Wistrcill is a fool (not likely).

you am i
This is great news. Thank you Tom W. and Dr. Proenza for stepping up.
Hilltopper
This is great news. I hope that Porter is here for the full 5 years. Hopefully there is a huge "poison pill" in there that makes it very expensive for another team(Pro or collegiate) to lure him away.
Dave in Green
Top college coaches in any sport are most often lured away by one of two things -- the promise of making more money and/or a better opportunity to win a national championship.Others may be able to offer more money than UA. But Coach Porter has already proved that he can come within a single kick of winning a national championship at UA, and doesn't need to relocate to have a better chance than he has right here in Akron, Ohio.Producing a soccer dynasty at UA would be a more impressive coaching achievement than doing so at one of the "big name" schools that are expected to produce sports dynasties. ZachTheZip
What are we trying to become? The UCSB of the east? Or are they trying to become the "Akron of the west"?

But, don't forget, it is Caleb's own commitment to the university, town and program that keeps him in Akron. UA cannot come close to paying what Major League Soccer can. We can "compete with", but not top what the best NCAA programs could pay him. I think Caleb Porter has not yet finished what he came to town to do, and I'm confident he will fulfill that dream before very long. At that time, the program will be on a footing that some other well-prepared coach can step in and continue the trip near the same level. NEAR the same level -- if we're lucky. Nothing stands in the way of our man moving up in his career. But he will always be regarded as the man who made Akron an elite men's soccer program. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Well I am just tickled pink, and guess what Tom W? I just decided to buy season tix for the UA futbol season in 2010. I've never been a big soccer guy but damn it I'm in now. Caleb is a winner and just a solid coach. This team REPRESENTED at the tournament baby. Tom W, You came here to build and so far you're making moves that I'm very happy with. Revenue streams are going to GROW! Go Zips. Go Caleb. ZachTheZip
http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/79464252.htmlUA Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill said Porter will make a base salary of $170,000 per season, a $70,000 annual raise. Porter, 34, is signed through the 2014 season. In addition to the new contract for Porter, the university has plans to upgrade the soccer facilities, including adding lights and seating at Lee Jackson Field. He pointed to happiness and stability as factors in his decision to stay at UA.''I enjoy what I do as a college coach and mentoring student-athletes on and off the field as soccer players, students and people,'' Porter said. ''For me, happiness and stability are more important. My family's happiness is key and especially when I have one of the best situations in college soccer. They are a priority over money and prestige, and yet in college soccer, there is enough of a buzz on our program that I get the best of both worlds. I am in a good spot right now. I am in a situation that I have worked hard to build. I am very blessed to have what I have. There is no reason to leave the situation I am in.''Wistrcill said Porter's contract includes a $50,000 buyout should he decide to leave after one season; the figure decreases each additional year. meatwad
This is unreal. I remember when Ken left there was a lot of thinking that we would be fading into oblivion in the next few years. Turns out it was the best thing that could happen to this program. We hit the jackpot with literally the best coach in the college ranks and a guy that is loyal and wants to stay at Akron. This sort of stuff just doesn't usually happen to NEO sports teams. It's stuff like this that merits showering the athletic department with donations to help get this field done!
GoZips
Call me puzzled. All over the news this morning was a story that the University is in the black for 2009.A three million dollar "profit" or as they say "unspent expenses".That money would easily fund the soccer stadium improvements.Bless their souls they gave the money away to the non-union employees as a two percent bonuses. A two per cent kicker for Christmas. Nice. Of course, now the union employeeswill strike for their two per cent. Wisdom.
Zipsrifle
In reading Caleb's comments, this guy is freaking too good to be true! I'm asking myself, what did Akron do to deserve this guy?? Honestly, right now, he tops Proenza for my favorite person in Akron. It's damn hard to top Dr. P.Now, how are we paying for this new soccer stadium, and if it involves issuing more bonds, should I be pissed at Dr. P or Caleb? Hmmmmm.....
