Captain Kangaroo
UAM...........will either you, or a designated lackie of your chosing PLEASE clean Frenchies glasses before he starts broadcasting the games! "Nice catch by Dominic Hixson" "Wait...Joe Dunn is telling me that was Jabari Arthur." "Great catch by Jason Montgomery." "Wait, Joe Dunn is telling me it was Johnny Long." etc. etc. etc. It went on all day long. I thought Stams did a nice job with the color commentary. He describes the sets and stratagies well. I saw him doing a game on ESPNU the other night. He may not be in the Zips booth for long?
Z-P
Hey! CK...............you're going to M/Boro this week, right? Hey UAM............. How about a guest "assistant" in the booth to sort of "help" Frenchie a little? What the hey.............do we have a bigger long term fan than "The Cap"? M could keep his glasses clean, spot for him, and slip him notes of listener interest. Here's a game plan to pull this off..................have Tommy "pull a name out of the hat" on Thursday nights show, picking "the winner" of the contest (what contest?) to sit in the booth for the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know THE CONTEST. I luv this idea!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone's a winner! Steve gets things right, we'll have some extra enlightened comment (nobody could ever be as good as you however ) and who knows...........it may spawn a new career and a free radio guy for the uni. Dr Z
First off, I don't think I can do a better job than Steve. The thing that gets me, is his tone. When Hixon fumbled the kick, from Steve's tone, I thought he lost the ball and Purdue was dancing in the endzone before Steve could tell us that Hixon recovered it. He has that "here we go again" sound in his voice everytime something goes bad. Maybe it's from announcing so many bad Zips football games. Whatever it is, it's annoying. Although, I have heard a lot worse. Still, might be time for a change. I wish I could insert a wav file here and imitate him, but you know what I mean. PS I agree that Stams does a good job. PSS The funniest thing I have ever heard Steve say, was on his Monday talk show. Before Tressel got his job at Columbus U, a YSU fan calls up and says "I think Jim Tressel should be the next coach at Columbus U." Steve says "Tressel, Tressel, my BIG TOE has a better chance of coaching at Columbus U than Jim Tressel"

If so, I’m in!

Althought I do like his level of excitement when we do something good, either that "here we go again" tone needs to go away or he does. Long Live Frenchie -- There's a lot worse out there. Anyone ever heard the Can't State broadcasts ? or the guy that has sub'd for French ? Yes, French can get a little down but he makes some great calls when things are going well and the Zips are making plays. All the college announcers are tough on their teams to some degree - I've heard it at ND and OSU - after all, they are all big fans of their programs. I know he's made a lot of blowouts fairly entertaining and close games really exciting with his calls to me. For basketball, I don't think we can possibly do better. I hope French has the job as long as he wants it. Just another opinion - Hate seeing a good guy and announcer hung out to dry. It would be a really bad move by the UA. Z-P
Please don't mis-understand me..............I really like Steve also, I just wish he'd clean those specs...............I'm totally serious here! He could use a good flask toting spotter..............hey, maybe after a hit or two from Cap's jug, he's slow down just a smidgen and get more calls right
Buckzip
French sometimes sounds like he is on TV. He doesn't explain what is going on. He sounds like he knows you are watching.

If you don't...like Pouch said...try sitting through Can't's Bill Needle for more than 5 minutes. Frenchie does screw up names all the time. Does WNIR's health plan not pay for glasses? InTheZone
I personally love Steve French and think that as a mid-major school we are lucky to have an announcer as dedicated to Zips athletics as he is. Keep up the good work Frenchie!
flipthezip
I totally agree with the board as Steve does have a "here we go again" voice as well as an over excited call at times. But isn't that what makes him "The voice of the Zips". He is a true fan and calls the games from and with his heart. He emotes the same emotions we are feeling. Also, it was game 1 of the season. Give him a little break on the numbers and players.
JP Morgan
Seriously, I have read this exact thread like 50 times over the past 10 years. Someone paste this thread to the opening page for all to read so it doesn't get posted again. As much as I hate to say it, frenchie isn't going anywhere soon.
