zff Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Here is the most telling stat from saturdays game: Starting with the drive that made the score 42-28 NIU ran up 288 yards of offense and 21 points. That is when the Zips went into the prevent defense. I have never liked that defense and I hope the Zips coaching staff burned in the locker room after the game. So if my above stat is correct that means that NIU managed just a little over 200 yards before the change in defense. This Zips defense is the best I have ever seen!!!!! Quote
grice Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Ahead 28 -14 with a little over two minutes left in the first half, Akron transfered to their prevent defense. It took nine plays, but the Huskies went down the field to make it 28-21 at the half. The Zips did seem more successful in their regular game defense where they were putting pressure on Horvath. InTheZone Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 The Zips were never in a prevent defense. They were in their base defense the entire fourth quarter, but when a team goes hurry up it is next to impossible for Jim Flemming to call in blitzes and coverages. Our 3-3-5 depends on blitz packages and coverage variations to work, and when you can't get those in, it makes it very hard to stop anything. Quote
Zipsrifle Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 As long as we're complaining, those ref's sucked! Though we eventually got a TD, there was VERY noticable pass interference early in the game right in front of the ref that he overlooked. Did anyone else pick up on the Zips running play in the 4th that took no time of the clock? Also late in the game, and NIU receiver was tackled in bounds and then slid out of bounds, and of course, the clock was stopped. Quote
GP1 Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 The prevent defense did not hurt Akron on Saturday. They would have been fine had they not allowed NIU to march down the field in a little over a minute at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter. The purpose of the prevent defense (which ITZ is correct, Akron was not in) is to prevent quick touchdowns. NIU would have run the clock out on themselves if the Zips could have forced them into a three or four minute drive at this critical time of the game. Quote
RACER Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 not to be negative because at this point of the season im thrilled we are 2-1. i don't care what defense we were in we still could not stop the passing attack. we knew they were going to throw the ball every play in the fourth qtr ,and will still could not stop them. purdue almost scored 50 on us. to call this the best defense ever ????? most of the mac teams don't play defense. i watched bg defense get beat up to ;so our defefense is no worse than any ther mac teams though. i think jd needs one or two more years to get all the players he needs for us to have a decent defense. go akron!!! Kangaroo Craig Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Our defense got very tired in the fourth quarter. Much of this had to do with the fact that our offense was scoring on big plays and that forced our defense back onto the field with very little rest. There is little depth on defense, especially at the linebacker position. As a result, there are not enough players to come in and give our guys a breather every now and then. Am am very pleased with our quick strike ability on offense, but I would also like to see a more balanced attack that takes time off the clock while still putting points up on the board. Don't get me wrong, the running game was good Saturday, but we scored fast. Had we been able to grind it out, I think our defense would have been able to shut them down in the fourth just as they did in the first three. Quote
zipboy Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Good points. The weird thing is, the offense had long drives and ball control in the 1st 2 games. I think they took what NIU gave us last week. Quote
Buckzip Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Our defense will get better in the next couple years. JT just needs to keep building the depth, so he can rotate more freely. The defense looked strong in each game until the 4thQ Even against Purdue, the defense held up until they were dead on their feet. Quote
RACER Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 that's true. we did seem to wear down in the 4th qtr in both games.i think if we had more depth at lb,and dl you can keep people fresh.especially against the pass .it does wear a team out chasing the qb all day,and the dbs are running with the wr. im sure the d will get better, but this is not the best d we have had. as much as i hate to admit it faust had a few good lbs when he was here. keys, clark ,dunn, hilk, ect. wasn't jt a faust recruit to?go akron. Quote
Buckzip Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 D-line is the ones that need rotated the most. They are getting beat on by 300lb guys every play. Next year we should have more depth on defense. Faust did have some good defenses. But he had no offenses. Clark, and Hilk were absolute stud LB's. Clark would probably have been in the NFL if he didn't screw up. Quote
GP1 Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 JT just needs to keep building the depth, so he can rotate more freely. Did we get a new coach? Quote

I wonder if, not that it is obvious we're in the hunt for a championship, we get a few Fr.'s in the mix to spell Stokes, Rohr and Grant. Those guys played almost the entire game last week. Quote
RACER Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 it would have been nice to d.earl back this year. we juts lost to many lb's this year to replace them; plus add some depth. Quote
