Dr Z
As I'm sure most of you on this board do, I love to watch sports on TV. HD has made that experience even greater. Unintelligent announcers detract from the experience. I hate listening to talking heads that announce sports and have nothing to offer. I could go on and on with a list of terrible people that announce now-a-days. Instead, I'll give you a good one. I don't know how many of you got to witness the US play Canada last night. Why would you? They hid the game on CNBC in standard definition for some bizarre reason. If you couldn't find it, you missed out. Unbelievable game. But the point of my post is the announcing was awesome. I had to look up the announcer this morning and realized he is a MAC guy. Mike Emrick. Great job Mike. Dr Z
That game was on MSNBC in HD. And Emrick did a good job, much better than what I'm used to from TV sportscasters. I figured it was in HD somewhere because I turned over to NBC and the elf was showing highlights in HD. I have direct tv I watched it on CNBC (channel 356), CNBC (channel 355) was showing curling in HD. I simply hit the "olympic icon" on the guide and that's where it took me. zipseuph
I do have to give the "big time sports announcers" some sympathy because they are expected to know everything about every team in every sport. thats not easy to do

They have time to prepare and study. It's going to happen in any decent paying job. Happens at mine.
zen
My biggest problem with most sports announcers on television is one that I know is not going to change. It's the CONSTANT talking. It wont change because the networks all operate under premise that there is a portion of the audience who will not retain attention if someone isn't talking to them, the even though you can see what is happening. That said, I don't mind the play by play, because even though I can see what is happening, it's pretty inane and harmless to hear someone call it out.I also don't mind so much when announcers give some color commentary in the following ways, such as the state of the players and teams, why some people are playing and some aren't, background and history, tid-bits right out of the team media guide, or even accounts and information from player interviews....but what I can't stand is the (subjective) game analysis, commentary, and opinionation! Okay, I understand that you might just know more about the game than me, or perhaps your powers of observation and deduction could even be better than mine, since after all you are getting paid to do this, but don't care to have you harp continuously on the fact that the game was lost in the trenches, or that one team spend 56% of the time in the other teams backfield and 9 times out of 10 they are going to lose because of it.I know that there isn't always something going on down on the field or court to call, and I know these guys are never going to shut up. I just wish they could check their ego at the booth door and stop trying to impress people with their analysis.[/rant]thanx for the topic
Valpo Zip
On the other side, if you watched the CAVS play the magic on ABC, you probably experienced the worst ever announcing of a game. The only ones that were worse than the announcers were the officials. This is a conversation between Marc Jackson and the other announcer (not sure of his name)Announcer: Varejao is on the floor asking for a foul.Jackson: Well Varejao is a flopper, officials know that so he won't get that call.Announcer: let's see it on replay.Jackson: Yep, like i said, he's a flopper, give the guy an oscar (me: )Announcer: I am not sure that was a flop, i mean Howard elbowed him in the throat.Jackson: yeah, he was elbowed in the throat but that doesn't matter... he's a flopper. So note to every team playing the Cavs: whoever sees AV on the floor, feel free to punch him in the face and kick him in the nuts. You won't be called for anything, because he's a flopper. And Jackson gets paid to say that crap on national TV.

And Emrick did a good job, much better than what I'm used to from TV sportscasters.Conspiracy TheroryThe move does have some conspiracy theorists licking their chops though. Might NBC Universal have deliberately moved the game to MSNBC because Comcast — who is awaiting regulatory approval to take a controlling stake in NBC Universal — has MSNBC in HD, and one of its competitors, DirecTV doesn’t? ZachTheZip
The worst seems to be when they cover MAC games but never actually talk about the game in front of them. 75% of the time they're blabbering on about BCS conference standings or what's on next because they can't wait for what's on now to be over with. There's plenty of drama to be had in the MAC standings. It's a complete crapshoot, which provides intrigue because every game matters for every team. it's not like the BCS conferences where you know it's down to 2 or 3 teams before the season even gets started. zip37
Ignorance of anything other than BCS sports also is in play: Example Wright St. beats Mich St @ Dayton-- talking heads on ESPN state that the victory by WSU had to be the biggest in history. Ignorant of the fact that WSU won back to back National Championships. I quit watching that netorn for anything other than actual games. I turn off the sound and listen to internet radio [old time radio].

They did have better luck in the Division II men's basketball championship game in 1983 than the Zips did in either 1964 or 1972.In his first game at the Nutter Center I openly questioned how in the world Ralph got V to to sign with Wright State; it was REAL obvious that he was WAY TOO good to be playing with the Raiders, and I was correct. Hence, the departure after 2 seasons as a 1st round NBA selection.
