UA Fan Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Those who were at the game... How many times did they use it? Was it at appropriate rally-the-crowd moments? Did the crowd respond (positively?) Quote
Quickzips Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 They did it on every kickoff. It got annoying after about the 3rd or 4th time. Wasn't really an appropriate rally point and the crowd seemed more confused than anything. Quote
Zipsrifle Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Yea, it wasn't really a rallying point at the game. They just sounded it during kickoffs. I don't understand how that is supposed to get people fired up. There were pleanty of times in the 4th Quarter that they should have used it IMO, but they didn't. How is it that the athletics department creates this new whistle, tells the fans it will signal a rallying point and will only be used when necessary, and then blows it at totally inappropriate times? It seems like a pretty simple concept to me. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 The whistle wasn't abused, as so many other similar sound bites are at college football games. I had no problems with it. Will it catch on? Tough to tell after 1 game. Quote
Zippy989 Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 What do you guys think of the cannon? Startles me everytime and scares my little girl as well as everyone else... Quote

GP1 Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 I hear the cannon is probably on the way out. Why? We need something to wake people up. Good football doesn't seem to be enough. As far as the whistle, I hardly noticed it. Quote
KingZip Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 I wish they would bring back the pregame fireworks. The more noise the better, cannons, people cheering, who cares - noise is football. If the cannon bothers your little girl you could let her know after every touchdown to exepct a boom. That is your fallback as a parent. Quote
InTheZone Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 The cannon's one of my favorite things at the game. Most major schools have something like that, it adds to the atmosphere. I'd be very disappointed if they did away with this. They should also consider firing fireworks everytime the Zips score a touchdown. Quote
zipper Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 All for the cannon, and love the fireworks to start the game. Quote

Apparently there was a mishap with a similar cannon at a west coast football game last week. The mishap may shut down all collegiate cannons in the future. Forgive me for not having more details. Maybe someone else can help me here? Quote
zip37 Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 LOVE THE CANNON, LOVE THE FIREWORKS, NOISE NEVER HURT ANYONE. WITH WADDING, POWDER, TAMP AND LOAD. Quote
GP1 Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 I really need to weigh in on this fireworks nonsense. I'm about to reading the comments to bring them back. At big time college football games, fireworks are not set off while the team runs onto the field, after a win or after a score. To do so makes a program silly at best. When a team scores, the school fight song should play unobstructed by the sound of fireworks as we had to agonize through in the past. When the team runs onto the field, the school fight song should play unobstructed by the sound of fireworks as we had to agonize through in the past. At the end of a game in which we win, the school fight song should play unobstructed by the sound of fireworks as we had to in the past. I can't think of another school where fireworks are set off during or after any of these events. Fireworks are for minor league baseball games and make the program look "bush league all the way". They should take whatever money they would waste on fireworks and put it towards a new stadium. Quote

And see its for minor league baseball, the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have all done fireworks recently at games I've been at. It just adds to the excitement and is something good for the kids who might otherwise be bored with a game they don't really understand. Quote
UAM Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Cannon is safe at the Rubber Bowl... West Coast mishap was with a midified howitzer, not the spcial cannon we have which only fires 10 gauge blanks. Fireworks are postgame only, and only on the 22nd vs. Army. Also have fireworks at on-campus events such as soccer, it brings families to the games. Thanks for your support! Quote
zipper Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 UAM, why no more fireworks pregame? Quote
zip37 Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 ITZ== if you go to pit to see a game, you must be doing it to see the stadium, because the team is not worth walking across the street to watch, and i am a former partial season ticket holder. having that team playing in that stadium is like putting whipped cream on a dog turd! Ryno aka Menace Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 Well I am from Massillon and the tigers shoot off a cannon after every touchdown! So I am used to hearing a cannon after every score I think it should stay so all the neighboring people that didn't come to support the zips hear them doing well and maybe inclined to come to the next home game, and I especially agree that it "wakes people up" which is also a good thing! I think the fireworks makes it more festive and exciting, kids love seeing fireworks and it presents the atmosphere of "putting on a show" and around northeast ohio we need all the extra's to make it exciting and entertaining, because like someone else mentioned good football ain't enough!! Quote
GP1 Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 I'm going to say it again. Fireworks at college football games are bush league and low class. Have you ever noticed all the nose pickers and filthy people who show up to fireworks nights at Aeros games and downtown on July 4? I doubt anyone has ever left a game at the Rubber Bowl saying to themselves, "Self, I'm going back next week to see those fireworks that you can't see because the sun is still up when they go off. Man, that was great". The gun is a good thing though because it gets the ROTC involved in games. Quote

Now, if we can get the crowd to actually clap and sing the words! Anybody seen 111,000 people singing "Hail to the Victors!".....AWESOME! As pathetic as this sounds, they need to put the words to the fight song up on the board. Quote
