If I was coach, I would just go out and offer every five-star prospect in the country. Promise them they will start immediately. Tell them they have a chance to put up numbers unheard of in the NCAA, numbers that will help the stand out on draft day.

Isn't that what all coaches say? :D

Seriously, I think you have a point. About the ONLY positive recruiting angle to take from a season like this is the legitimate argument that a prospect could indeed come in and play immediately. Of course it's up to iCoach to convince them that playing right away for HIM can be seen as an "opportunity".

I remember Ianello saying in several interviews that he never promises playing time to recruits under any circumstances. I think it's time to change that policy now that he's not working at a BCS school with great depth.

In other news, OT Ray Ball verballs to Wisconsin.

Cole Stoudt (the HS senior, not the JUCO) to...

WYOMING?!?!!?

http://www.scoutingohio.com/index.php/view...p;name=Cole1818

Well, guess we need to go after his brother with everything we got. According to Rivals, we finally offered him.

Interestingly, it seems that both Zack and Cole visited Wyoming at the same time but only Cole verbaled.

In all honesty...this is a college kid that might very well know his place in college football (lower FBS or FCS) and wants to go somewhere far from home and a place that is different from where he grew up/might very well live the rest of his life.

I actually prefer him going to Wyoming over a MAC school NOT named Akron for various reasons.

A little off topic but has anyone else noticed that there have been ZERO visits listed for the Zips on Scouts?

Are these normally reported by the athlete or the school?

Only the athlete or the high school coach can report those. The university cannot comment on a recruit or even acknowledge that they are recruiting them until they have signed an LOI.

Welcome aboard, Cody.

I'll update the list on the first page. He's listed as a FB by the recruiting services. If he becomes starting tailback, I imagine he would be the bruiser in a tandem with H-back Nick Rossi.

I liked this quote: “I basically noticed that there are not many Akron kids on the Akron roster, and I want to help change that. I want to contribute to Akron.” Could he be something like Travis and Joyce were for basketball?

Cody Grice - RB - Akron Firestone gives verbal to Zips...

Strong words on how Akron compares to other visits.

Very excited to hear this! We've got to start keeping our best players home & this is a good start. Cody's a big, strong, fast back. I'm planning on going to the Info Friday night to watch the Firestone-Buchtel City Series championship game. It'll probably be the only exciting game I see @ the Info all year!

[edit]... Another great quote:

“I have been to some Big East schools and Akron’s facilities are better than there’s. I have been living in Akron all my life. I have seen the school evolve from just being mediocre to a high class school.”

Welcome aboard, Cody! Glad you're a Zip!

Great get, iCoach!

That is a GREAT quote!!! A true homeboy ready to represent! THAT'S THE ATTITUDE OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS!

What caught my eye in the list of 2011 fullback prospects is that Grice is graded only 1 point lower (72 vs. 73) than Hunter Joyer, who was recruited by Urban Meyer at Florida. If Ianello can recruit more players of this caliber and get them to perform up to their potential, the Zips might actually start winning some games.

I feel if we can at least recruit the best O-line, FB/ H-back, and at least a reasonable RB, we can win at least 4 MAC games through ball control. A solid ground game would make it easier to pass, one thing leads to another.. all of a sudden we're winning. The defense would be better if they don't spend so much time on the field.

“The big thing with Cody is his leadership,” Flossie said. “He and Tommy Brown have both been good leaders and captains.”

This is my favorite quote from the article. If this thing can be turned around, it's going to take a lot of perseverance and resolve. I look forward to seeing Cody on the field.

More quotes from Cody, this time from the Plain Dealer.

"The previous coach [J.D. Brookhart] never recruited in-town kids before and I wanted some Akron talent to stay in Akron".

"I want to help turn it around," he said. "Right now Akron's on a down slope because the coach hasn't had a recruiting class. I think they're going to excel more."

We'll see about that second one in time. But the first one is troubling. I always assumed we offered the standouts in the City Series but they always chose to leave home. For the coach to not have established relationships with the city coaches or recruit any players after six years in unacceptable. He sure didn't have trouble getting kids from the suburbs, though.
