ZachTheZip Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 I judge that the defense will be hard to improve. Sometimes you just can't guard a player. I judge that we missed too many layups in close games, settled for too many jump shots with time on the clock, and ran too poor an offense for the defense to mean anything. Teach your players to finish around the rim and to follow their shots and you're dancing, Coach. You don't lose to Eastern Michigan or to Austin Peay or to OU or even to Rhode Island. Your players are so scared that they'll get benched if they don't sprint back to the half court defense after putting up a poorly timed shot that they're not there to get their rebounds and get another chance. They're so focused on not letting the other team score that they look like a CYO team when they have the ball. This isn't fotball. You're team can't get an interception or a fumble and score on defense. It does not win games, it just makes it easier for the offense but if you don't care about offense then it does absolutely no good. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 I am not playing anybody who doesn't guard. Maybe Brett McKnight won't even get the chance to take such a high percentage of his team's shots next year. Quote

And sometimes they just looked out of gas even with the rotation, so maybe conditioning is a problem. But worst of all, if you watched the second 1/2 warmups in that last game, nothing would go into the basket in practice! I knew we were screwed right then, how can you win a game when you can't hit in practice?????? Quote
ZippyFanatic Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 defense matters. it matters a lot especially in the mac. there are no prolific offensive players in this conference. basset, kool, medlock, sigletipsy, and even eastern's duo are great players in their own right but they are not impossible to guard. there are guys in college ball like that...john wall...derrick rose...but there are not any in the mac. wally might have been the last one. we just don't get the recruits. so in dambrots defense in a league like the mac great defense can and will win championships. if you want evidence look at the cavs and the nuggets. both are roughly the same offensively with the nuggets probably being a little bit better. but the cavs defense make them a better team and they have won 7 or 8 more games because of it. i know defensive basketball is not what anyone wants to watch, me included, but its what we need to win. Lee Adams Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 dambrot is pretty tight about the way he recruits and coaches...unless he broadens his horizons what you have seen is what you will get... Quote

Just last year Akron won the MAC behind their defensive effort...so I'm not sure why some here are saying you can't win with defense. That theory was proven wrong just last year... Quote
Dave in Green Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 You never win with just defense or just offense. You win when your combined offense/defense is better than the other team's combined offense/defense. Statistically speaking, the Zips offense was a little better this season than last, and the defense was a little worse. The past two seasons were actually pretty similar, except the Zips performed a little better in the MAC regular season and a little worse in the MAC tournament championship game. Quote

I have no doubt that Keith is driven to win championships. I have no doubt he wants to win every game the Zips play in. I have no doubt his style of play is designed to win against a lot of bad teams and falls short in big games and against good teams. Quote

I'm still trying to figure out what possible expletive could have fit in there. Maybe he actually said "I am not here to sit with 24 wins". Quote

Dave in Green Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 Ask Georgetown how bad Ohio is, a team the Zips beat twice this season. Quote
infofan Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 I dont know what the explative stated was, nor do I really care, but Im glad hes not happy. Im tired of the Brookharts of the world saying we tried hard, the effort was there, but the ball didnt go in. No better motivation than anger......frustration. His anger isnt just over a bad game in CBI. remember his contract.............................. From The Plain Dealer......................Failing to win the MAC tournament title cost Keith Dambrot a bonus of a half-month of his salary. The Zips (24-10) faced Green Bay on Wednesday in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational. • The contract: Pays a base salary of $200,000 ... stipulates that the coach get a year extension if his team wins at least two-thirds of its regular-season games or makes the NCAA or NIT tournament and achieves certain academic standards. • Among bonuses earned this season: $5,000 for 20-win season. • Among bonuses he could have earned: One-half month of base salary for MAC regular-season title, one-third month of base for making NIT, $2,500 per NIT win and $15,000 for NIT championship ... Also one-half month of base for making NCAA Tournament, and $5,000 per win plus $40,000 to reach Final Four and $100,000 for NCAA National Championship. By the way- did anyone go see Josh Egner at the JAR on thursday night?? Awesome shot of him dunking in the BJ today. Quote
Dave in Green Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 ..... • Among bonuses he could have earned: One-half month of base salary for MAC regular-season title, one-third month of base for making NIT..... Hmmm, since the MAC regular-season title results in an automatic invitation to the NIT, I assume that the one-third month of base for making NIT is only applicable in an instance of an NIT invite without winning the MAC regular-season title. By the way- did anyone go see Josh Egner at the JAR on thursday night?? Awesome shot of him dunking in the BJ today. Yes, already under discussion in ZN.O's Basketball Recruiting forum. Quote
