There's more discussion regarding the personnel transfers. It's VERY curious how a JR walk-on from Twinsburg (Doug Richardson) can take over for Carter at safety.

With new coaching staffs comes new opportunities. Guys that weren't even given looks and written off as scout team fodder under the old regime are evaluated the same as everyone else and sometimes those guys show that they deserve a look. That's the thing with new coaching staffs... guys looking for a chance love them, and guys who feel like they already proven themselves and are entitled to something hate them. That seems to be the feeling coming out of some of our "insiders" on this board about some of last year's "leaders" feeling like they're being disrespected.

I read this article as a positive. We should not expect the new coach to say much nice about the progress in the media.

The biggest positive I see from the article is the problems are more mental than physical. If a guy doesn't have the physical ability, it is a huge problem. Our guys have the physical ability. If a guy is a little slow on the uptake of information, that can be corrected with reps and study time. Guys are adjusting mentally from how the story reads, just not at the rate the coach would like. I sort of expected to read a story like this.

It's critical during the summer that the leadership of the team focuses on getting the small mental things right. Be on the field when your formation is called. Line up in the right place. Know the basic terminology. Know the 10-20 most basic plays inside and out.

Our problem with JD was not there was not talent. It wasn't that the kids couldn't learn. It wasn't effort. It was the coaches not putting the kids in the best position to win. If Coach I just puts the kids in a position where they have a shot at winning, it should be worth two more wins next year.

This is not a bad thing.

A few wins early in the season will make everything all right. I think the best players will be on the field. It is what iCoach is paid to do.

Too bad our early season schedule is set up for failure.

If playing Syracuse and Indiana means that we are setup for failure then we might as well give up and implode the new stadium. Those are two teams that are lower-mid level D1 programs. Kentucky is a stretch for us at this point in the programs current status, but we should be able to compete with the Kentucky's of the world.

I 100% agree with you, but GP1 in 3...2...1...

The football schedule is set up for 6-7 win season and failure. The basketball schedule is set up for a 20 win season and the illusion of greatness. The basketball team has it right. It isn't about tearing down the stadium if the Zips can't beat Syracuse or Indiana. We needed the new stadium anyhow.

The Great GP1 is too brilliant to look at the world in such a narrow frame. The problems the Zips have competing against BCS schools are not isolated to just UofA. There is a growing disparity between the upper level of FBS and the lower level of FBS. Neither group is either good or bad. They just exist as they are. The solution isn't "growing" D-IA from 130 to 150 teams. It is about making it smaller....much smaller.

We probably have the best facilities and stadium in all of FCS (I-AA to you old timers....I'm trying to make the adjustment but I'm finding it difficult). UofA would be a powerhouse I-AA team and the MAC would be a powerhouse I-AA conference. Instead, we are bottom feeders, which is exactly the way the NCAA wants it to be. There is an old saying, "You can't fight city hall". We can't beat the NCAA because the rules are stacked against us as a I-A team/league.

Regardless I still think that AD at Syracuse is gonna be eatin' his words about how "We Should Beat Akron". I say screw him and the boat he rode in on. I, along with many of the players expect to win the MAC, go to a bowl game and.....

We'll beat Syracuse on our way to a stellar season. No brag, just fact. :champs::gun:

In listening to some of the Zips Live show last night on 1350 am, I heard DC Mallory talk about some of the defensive players that are playing well in spring. He mentioned Sewell and Marcoux on the inside of the line. He mentioned Wagner at inside LB and Thomas at outside LB. He said Richmond had been the best DB so far. I believe he said Waller and Weaver have been getting the most 1st team reps at corner. It's interesting to think of Sewell playing DT. His quickness has got to be a big concern for most MAC OC's, since he's also strong enough that you can't just run over him either. I'm getting the impression that, while the overall size of the Zip D will increase because of the change to the 4-3, there is still an emphasis of speed and skill over size. I guess we'll get a little better indication of this on Saturday.

I dont know where this illusion of greatness is because nobody goes to the games. If people thought the team was great the games would have better attendance. If the basketball team beat good opponents and played schools besides Malone and Mount Union at home they may have a following.

As for football....this seasons schedule is PERFECT. We have a home opener with a beatable BCS school in Syracuse. We play the 1-AA dummy to get our feel good win. We play a crap Big Ten team and we play a bottom to low level SEC school. How could it be better? I would rather have this then playing OSU, Penn State and Georgia as our 3 BCS teams. I would also rather have this schedule as opposed to North Texas, Middle Tennessee State and FIU. Nobdy gives 2 craps about those teams.

I think it is getting closer to "perfect". I would trade Kentucky for Marshall, Army, Tulane, Connecticut or Navy to give us an even more favorable potential non-conference season. Yes, I know UConn and Navy are good. but Kentucky is still a mid-level SEC team. Coming off 3-9, that is a tall task.

I'll take Syracuse at home and I'll take whatever 1-AA team we play next year. I don't think we will beat Syracuse, but the 1-AA scrap should be a gimme.

We lost to Indiana at home last year and I don't see us winning there next season. Kentucky on the road will be brutal. Most SEC teams could beat a MAC team with their back-ups.

The Zips play back to back road games three times next year....that's terrible scheduling.

Your scenario of NTSU, MTSU and FIU is exactly the schedule the Zips should be playing....throw in a 1-AA team and replace one with a BCS ATM game. All of those games would be a potential win. I'm not sure why we have to guarantee three loses a year so we can hope to win one of those BCS games every 10 years....wait, I do know. The football program is the cash cow that funds the rest of the "growing" Athletic Department.

I've watched this program flounder (I had some fried flounder at Hymans in Charleston last week, must still be on my mind) for 20+ years now playing brutal schedules and I'm sick of the losing. I'm sick of starting out seasons 1-3 with an uphill climb to some sort of respectability. I 'm sick of the wet blanket a 1-3 start throws on a season and fan interest. You can't continue to put players who have lost over and over again in a situation where they fail early in a season and the losing becomes just another part of the ongoing routine. Scheduling is a huge part of the problem as to why the Zips can't seem to get moving in a positive direction. Just like JD didn't put the Zips players in positions to be successful, the AD can't put the coach into a position where he can't be successful. Scheduling is a huge part of what an AD can do to help a coach be successful. I hope that our new AD, when he is not suspending innocent assistant coaches, hiring his friends and giving away free tickets can find time to plan a better schedule for the football program.

I'll excuse the AD for this schedule once, but no more. He had to play with the cards he was dealt. If three BCS teams are on the schedule the year after next and into the foreseeable future, it is proof that the football program is nothing more than a cash cow for the Athletic Department. We need to shift some of the financial burden off of the football and onto other programs that have scheduled weakly in recent years (hint: MBB).

Jeese, you guys just cannot let the schedule (good or bad) go! Hasnt that topic been :horse:

This thread is about the new regime and new style of play for the team.

So back to our regularily scheduled program: This team is going to look entirely different if I'm reading the ABJ stories right. And if so, then Im back on board full tilt.

Zips will run a Pro-style Offense. We'll see RB AND FB at the same time along with TE'S AND WR'S. This concept seems so strange to our team. I cannot wait to see normal snaps without our QB staring at the sidelines for 10 sec after already coming to a set position. Also, there may be a QB battle once/if Rodgers is healthy.

Defense will be a 4-3 style. As Coach I said they will "stuff the box" Hoping to see other teams have problems running against the Zips. Maybe we'll see RB's swallowed up by our Pouch Defense. :)

5-6 wins would be a good start in the right direction.

Lots of MAC teams are moving to the Pistol offense.

I noticed that too. NIU is one of them. I believe Ault started the pistol at Nevada and Indiana picked up some of it last year.

Indiana is now almost exclusively running out of the Pistol. So we'll get to see pretty early how the new defense holds up against it. Can't is also moving towards it.

It's a little more widespread than I first realised (Wiki Link).
