2011 MLS Draft Projection

Recommended Posts

I put together my own MLS mock draft and i have Nagbe, Valentin, and Kofi leaving as underclassmen. Originally I had Kofi staying for his senior year because he is so into his academics. But the Portland Timbers are showing a lot of interest in Kofi. Also D.C. United needs a right back badly so if the Timbers were to pass on Kofi for Omar Salgado he would go to them. And if Kofi sings with Gereation Adidas, they give you a scholarship to finish up your school. Zarek I believe will go bc if D.C. United doesn't go with Kofi they could go with Zarek, bc he plays right back, if I'm not mistaken, for the US U20 team. Then with Darlington, everyone seems to be saying he will go number 1 so I don't know why he wouldn't leave.

1. Vancouver Whitecaps – Darlington Nagbe, Jr. F, Akron

2. Portland Timbers – Kofi Sarkodie, Jr. D, Akron

3. D.C. United – Omar Salgado, F, Generation adidas

4. Chivas USA – Zac MacMath, Jr. GK, Maryland

5. Philadelphia Union – Zarek Valentin, So. D, Akron

6. New England Revolution – Will Bruin, Jr. F, Indiana

7. Houston Dynamo – A. J. Soares, Sr. D, California

8. Vancouver Whitecaps (via Toronto) – Anthony Ampaipitakwong, Sr. M, Akron

9. Chicago Fire – Michael Farfan, Sr. M, UNC

10. Sporting Kansas City - Matt Kassel, Jr. M, Maryland

11. Seattle Sounders - David Bingham, Jr. GK, California

12. Columbus Crew - Ethan White, Jr. D, Maryland

13. NY Red Bull - Casey Townsend, Jr. F, Maryland

14. Real Salt Lake - Corey Hertzog, Sr. F, Penn State

15. San Jose Earthquakes – Justin Meram, Sr. F, Michigan

16. LA Galaxy - Jalil Anibaba, Sr. D, UNC

17. FC Dallas - Brain Ownby, Jr. F, Virginia

18. Colorado Rapids - Jason Herrick, Sr. F, Maryland

Here is the Portland Timbers big board.

I'm not really that knowledgeable about the MLS, but according to Soccer by Ives, Chivas signed some young keeper who they envision will be their future at that position. If that's true then Chivas could easily end up with another Zip. They'd then have three former Akron players.

Very true, also what I didn't realize was Philly Union signed Defender Ethan White as a homegrown player so I doubt Zarek will go there. He could very well go to Chivas USA. Also for the 12 spot replacing Ethan White, I see Corey Hertzog going there and then Nano possibly going NY Red Bull

I feel like we are going to have WAY too many MLS teams to root for. We'll have Zips playing all over the freaking country. Just hopefully none in Columbus.

Give Akron a freaking MLS team and rig the draft so every Zip goes to that team. Then we can build an MLS dynasty too! LOL

You're joking, right? They're geographically the closest professional soccer team to us and as of next year there will be at least four players on the UA roster who the Crew have right of first refusal to sign. Also, the Crew has N-O-T-H-I-N-G to do with Ohio State (and neither do we for the 1,782,954th time). You'd think you'd want the entire team to be drafted by the Crew so that you could watch them in person more often.

Whatever, let the ankle-biting continue...

I'm with you, w00t. I want an Akron player in Columbus so that I can drive less than 2 hours to see him play professionally numerous times throughout the year, or I can watch on ONN numerous times throughout the season from the comfort of my living room.

The obsession on this board over OSWho (and Can't) astounds me. Don't we get enough in the newspaper and on tv. Why even bring them up? folks say they hate them, but then they give them accolades by even mentioning them.

Memo to Columbus Crew: It is exceedingly difficult for fans of Fall sports in Ohio to get down with Black & Gold. Who did the initial market research anyway?

We appreciate you resisting the obvious Scarlett & Gray, but B & G elicits an involuntary gag reflex.

Feel free to mix in some Orange or something. Change your colors a bit and I will run to order your gear on Eurosport.

Until then I will be sporting a Seattle Sounders #11. It is quite nice.

I love the Crew, and I love the Black & Gold. It doesn't matter what color they are if you're a big soccer fan as myself. As of last season, we've been getting larger and larger groups from the Cleveland and Akron areas carpooling down to Columbus and standing up in the Nordecke for 90 minutes. Growing the game of soccer and support is the #1 goal. If you choose to support the Sounders, so be it, but make sure you travel down to Columbus to represent when they come to town. Stop in the HSH Club for a beer on me.

Hey, I'd love to see my Crew draft an Akron Zip player, but I doubt it. The top players will not fall to them. But if they happen to draft one, so be it, I'll be supporting him to make the squad.

Here is the first of three MLS draft projections that will be done by Soccer by Ives. What do you guys think? As oppose to some of you, I would love to have one of our guys go to Columbus.

I don't know enough about the MLS to be able to critique it. The thing that got me excited was Ampai to Seattle. I really have enjoyed watching Zakuani with Seattle. If he could team up with Ampai that would be awesome!

I watched the draft last year, and Chivas picked Gavin one pick before Seattle...later on in the draft, Sigi Schmid came out and admitted that if Gavin was still there when they were picking, they would of taken Blair Gavin...

I would like to see three things in the draft. It basically a given that Darlington, maybe even Perry will go #1 to Vancouver, so I would love to see a Zip go to Vancouver at #8 to have two players playing for them. Also someone going to Columbus, and last a Zip going to Seattle.

I want one of our guys on every team. Fans of BCS schools don't have a favorite NFL team based on how many of their college players are on it. Only teams that produce a small amount of professional players have fans who do that.

As professional sports have become greedier, I have found that I care less and less for specific teams. It was great last season being able to cheer for Blair & Ben with Chivas, Teal with Kansas City, Steve with Seattle, and Sinisa with New York. It was actually more gratifying to cheer for our former players to do well than to root for any one team to win.

January 13, 2011 will be a great day, hearing the names of our players and "The University of Akron" called so many times as each of them are drafted. Coach Porter should streak his hair for the occasion.

MLS combine team rosters and schedule. Zarek and Perry will not be participating in the combine due to national team duties, but according to the article, Darlington will also not be participating. Although its not really important for the GA guys to play at the combine (they have already proven themselves and put themselves on the radar by being good enough to be GAs) its weird that Darlington isn't participating; I wonder why not. Also you will notice that of the four of our guys participating in the combine, none of them were placed on Lolla's team, I wonder if this was a conflict of interest thing haha.

Interesting that Nanchoff will be teammates with John Rooney....I think it's safe to say John is no Wayne if he's working out for something as low level as Major League Soccer.

According to this mock draft, 7 Akron Zips are to be taken in the first 25 picks. Wow!

Caleb Porter has managed to do more than win Akron’s first national (team) championship. He has revived the significance of collegiate soccer as a whole. The pros are watching Akron closely and the National Team will soon follow suit.

The center of amateur soccer in America is currently Akron, Ohio.

If this draft play out like most think, it's really an amazing stamp on this national championship season. I realize it's apples and oranges, but can you imagine ONE NCAA (American) football or basketball team having FOUR of the first FIVE picks and FIVE of the first SEVEN???? Absolutely incredible

In the sports illustrated mock draft they have Seattle drafting Zac MacMath, the Seattle players said they weren't going to draft a goalkeeper. They need an attacking midfielder to soon replace Evans, i believe that's who it is, and I've heard a lot of talk of Ampai going to Seattle.

I wish I could find a better source to confirm this, but According to BigSoccer, Nagbe's agent has let it be known that his client has no intention of playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Whitecaps have the first pick in the draft.

I thought he skipped the combine because he knew he was going as the top pick and so had nothing more to gain. Now things are looking fishy.

Edit: Ives said that Nagbe doesn't want to go to Vancouver because it would impact his immigration status in the United States. If he eventually wants to play with the US Men's National Team, that would make sense.

That is one of the most amazing things I have seen. Can you imagine our basketball team with 4 players in the top 5 of the draft? Football team? There would be no way they could lose? Now I see why the team was so good. Far superior talent! No wonder KD makes comments like he did at the last post game press conference. Amazing. confused0068.gif
