We're Number 6

Recommended Posts

In the vein of all publicity is good publicity, Zippy made the list of Worst College Mascots as "voted" upon by ESPN.com readers. Impressive appearance though, other than WKU every other mascot is at a BCS school. Maybe we're not as far off as we think. :)

6. Akron Zips: "Originally, Zippers after a rubber overshoe. Really? A rubber overshoe? And your mascot is a kangaroo. It's Akron, not Australia. No wonder LeBron James moved to Miami," wrote Alex of Littleton, Colo.

Yea, our mascot and our nickname don't make much sense. I've mentioned here before that those rubber overshoes were almost called "Magiks" (sp?) so we could possibly be the Akron Magiks with a wizard as our mascot....that's not too bad. Personally, I like The Akron Zeppelins. We wouldn't have to change the "Z" logo, we could have a blimp at every event and blast Led Zeppelin music. As the originator of the ridgid airship is Ferdinand Von Zeppelin (a german guy) we could drink lots of beer and boy, wouldn't it be awesome to turn a bus into a Zeppelin for tailgating???

When the Akron Aeros were having their name the team contest, I submitted the name "Zeppelins." I thought it'd be a great name, and both the Zips & the baseball team would have nicknames that started w/ "Z." How unique would that be? A-Z.

Is Zippers really any different then the Red or White Socks or the Knickerbockers? I mean honestly foot coverings have been team names for a while.

And it's far better than the over used animal nicknames and mascots. At least we're unique.

I'm with you. I love the name, largely because it has history behind it and, unless you know that history, you'll not understand. I much prefer Zips to anything like Tigers, or Wildcats, or Bulldogs, etc....

Thus, (I know I'm an absolute homer, but) I actually consider Zips to be one of the best names in college sports.

I love:

Zips, Horned Frogs, Demon Deacons, Game Cocks, Gators, Hoosiers, and, as much as I hate to say it, Buckeyes. Anything unique & with a history to a locale.

I cannot stress how much I agree with this statement. Generic names are great and all, but Id much prefer a name that has a history and a reason for being the team's name rather than a name chosen purely on "fierce and menacing" reasons.
