johnnyzip84
It's time (maybe past time) to start looking ahead. From this article, it's possible the Zips will see a couple of freshmen at RB for the Running Bulldogs. Link1 Gaffney's article in today's Beacon says GW has 19 returning starters. The 28-14 opening day win over Brevard doesn't sound too impressive though. Link2
Captain Kangaroo
Ianello said the defensive problems came primarily from a lack of consistency. Of the 431 yards of total offense by the Orange, 217 came on seven plays. On the rest, Syracuse averaged 3.3 yards. Reminds me of a Butch Davis quote from a few years back after Jamal Lewis had bludgeoned the Browns for a whopping 295 yards. Davis was quick to spin: "Hey -- on 25 of his 30 carries we held him to a 2.5 yard average."
GoZipsGoZips
I wouldn't take this game for granted... as the Zips could easily loose to GW. The MAC's worst offense can't stay on the field for more than 3 plays... and that makes it tough an average (at best) MAC defense. Watch the Soccer Gametracker on your phone... http://www.sidearmstats.com/bgsu/msoc/ Starts at 1:00 PM It might be more exciting... and less depressing... than watching what's happening on the football field. The only bright spot will be Wagner's tackle numbers. Go Zips... Go Zips Soccer... (Godz Team)
Dr Z
Watch the Soccer Gametracker on your phone. It might be more exciting.Soccer on the moon is boring. Sorry. On the phone? If anybody catches me watching soccer on my phone...just shoot me. For the rest of my life I won't be able to figure out why soccer fans feel the need to convince football fans that soccer is....(fill in the blank). Akron soccer is awesome, I'm glad. I'm happy for Akron, and their fans. It just bores me to tears. Sorry. This is a good place for your phone info. Now back to the topic at hand, Gardner Webb. What we need to see, one, an effective offense. If we can't string first downs together against GW, we are in trouble for the rest of the year. It HAS to start now. Two, the team needs to limit penalties this week, play a "clean" game. Three, continue to build off of the pressure we created on the QB at times last week. I will go out on a limb and say that we are going to score a TD on defense this week. Three, show the fans some excitement. The average ZN football fan is down on his/her team right now, if we continue to go three and out early, the crowd will get uneasy. If we go up on GW big and win big, most of ZN will be back on board. I'm going to Kentucky and I don't want to be "down" on my team when I do. I get the jist of what he means...but still, any reminder of Butchie Boy is scary!!!! Of course, being fair to Butch Davis and relating back to my Patrick Nicely/Derek Anderson college comparisons= if Ianallo ends up being as good as Butchie was in COLLEGE, all will be good! Just watch out for those suspensions!

I've been waiting for technology to catch up with The Beautiful Game. Now at last we're seeing it happen. As far as "boring" goes...well, I just want to thank ESPN for not placing that Syracuse game on the tube. K92
I am not going to be able to tailgate this weekend since I was involved in an accident while entering lot 34 last Saturday. My van is being repaired, so no go. $3600 damage. Yikes! My brother-in-law and I are planning to just hit Pints! at 10 AM when they open, get a bite to eat and a couple of beers there. Since I didn't make it to lot 9 to meet any of you last week, I hope to make up for it this week.

I find that there is plenty of boring soccer being played throughout the world, but not by our Zips Mens team nor by the top teams in the World. Enough said...I'm not trying to convert you to being a soccer fan; just curious.
Dr Z
Just one question for you Dr. Z...have you watched the Akron Mens Soccer team last year or this year?Yes, I dedicated hours of my life to watch Zips tournament soccer (vs UNC & Virginia) last year on tv and never saw the Zips score one goal. As a matter of fact, NOBODY scored a goal. I enjoy my weekends too much to suffer through that ever again. Go Zips Soccer! Win it all, if they win and score a goal this time I will watch it on youtube.

suitanim
I also would like to point out that the GWU media guide lists twelve all-Big South preseason all-conference players from GWU, and the conference itself lists 8, not 7, so the team is obviously talented at their level of play. GoZipsGoZips
Can you guys read? Did I say that I was a soccer fan trying to convert football fans? I went to The Ohio State University first... and I will always be an Ohio State Football Fan. That's real football... and a real football program... where some of the best players in Ohio... and the rest of the country commit... very similar to Akron Soccer. This area has thousands of Akron Alumni who are also grads from other schools (I have 3 degrees... went to 3 schools). Ask around in the stands... or the bars... and you will find thousands of NCAA Football Fans who are looking for an excuse to pull for Akron (one of their Alma Maters). We outnumber this forum 1000 - 1. We just get tired of waiting... for decades... for a real Football Program to surface. If you look at the HS Football pool around here... you have to wonder how Akron cannot be dominating the MAC. Ohio state lands Beenie Wells in 2006... Akron's second best back (Carter) goes to Syracuse... and Akron gets... what the Big Ten... and what the rest of the MAC passes over. If U Akron could land some decent HS football players from the Akron-Canton area (e.g., 2nd team all conference) or lure outstanding players from smaller colleges (B-W, Mt Union, etc)... we would have the second best program in the state... and be on the same level as Cincy... and maybe Pitt. But... what we have is not a football program... it's a joke. If you do not think that Akron football is a joke... keep watching... like we do. It will never change. Even the MAC Championship Team was an average MAC team (7-6 maybe?) that managed a decent game in the MAC Championship (nice catch) after beating other avergae MAC East teams on tie-breakers. If you want to see REAL FOOTBALL... WATCH BIG TEN FOOTBALL. If you want to see a real program at Akron... watch Akron Soccer. Porter sure sure doesn't have any issues landing the very best players available... anywhere. He looses 3 guys to the pros... and gets three team USA players... all with International Soccer Experience (U-18, U-19, U-20)... plus a few other players from other countries. Hell... even the Ladies Tennis team is a good program... and they came from nowhere. [if you are a UA student... you should be hitting on them... instead of reading a forum.] How many HS All-Americans did the football team land? Kapish? suitanim
The Zips will win this game convincingly for the same reason Syracuse beat them convincingly. Cuse was more physical and had better all-around team speed than the Zips, especially across their lines. The Runnin' Bulldogs are every bit as big as the Zips (in fact their biggest OL and DL are much bigger than our biggest), but the reason these kids play for a middle-of-the-road D1aa school instead of a Big Ten or even a MAC school is their ability to move. The Zips will be more than they can handle in every phase of the game, and I expect the final score to be much like the Morgan State game last year. Decent football facilities and a reasonably attractive campus are a recent phenomenon at UA. There are 7 other Ohio 1A schools competing for Ohio players, including the 800-lb gorilla, not to mention just about every other school east of the Mississippi. It's tough to move up the food chain when no one associates Akron with 'winning tradition', but the rise of Cinci gives me hope. If soccer were a major sport in the U.S., we probably couldn't be perched at the top there either.

You just end up looking like the 30 or so white conservative tea partiers "rallying" outside this coffee shop i'm in, who believe they represent a cross section of the real "America" Point is, why is everyone so angry this year, it's not like we didn't see this coming. JD did a great job with the talent he was given but doomed his tenure with a lack of recruiting skills. CJ11 skunked the 2009 season and we knew we would have to start over, like it or not. So if you're tired of waiting, just leave...... As a true Akron fan all i want to see this year is the following. - development of players at skill positions who will be with us for awhile - re-emergence of the Akron attitude, and players who play until the final gun! - beat Can't (icing) - honest debate about the progress of the above from fellow Nation posters My expectations will rise as iCoaches tenure proceedes. If not we'll move on (again) and i will still root for my school, happy or not. Look Marshall has NEVER beaten WV. WV dosn't even want to play in Huntington, and they lost a hartbreaker last night. Yet the Marshall fans come back because they love their school. To all OSU, co/OSU fans. I welcome your support for our program. We will get better if it takes us another 100 years, at which point we will beat you (again ). But if you come on hear and chant that b10 football w/ the likes of Indiana and NW constitutes "real" football, then you are not an Akron fan second, third or even period. Even if you have a degree from our fine institution. Go away and enjoy your mass marketed bs....
