National Award Winner Leaves Zips

10/18/2010 1:13:31 PM | Joe Jastrzemski, AkronNewsNow.com

A surprise announcement from University of Akron head coach Rob Ianello.

During his weekly concerence call with reporters and broadcasters from around the Mid-American Conference Monday morning, Ianello announced that running back LeVon Morefield had quit the team.

If Morefield's name sounds familiar to Zip fans, it should. Morefield was the winner of last year's Rudy Award, which honors the FBS college football player who best embodies the principles of inspirational football legend Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who played at Notre Dame.

After winning the award as a walk-on, Ianello says that he gave Morefield a scholarship for winning the national 'Rudy' award.

Ianello did not provide any more details concerning Morefield or why he left the team.

The Zips play the Western Michigan Broncs this coming Saturday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium.

A shame that this coach drove off a student/athlete like that

Do you know that ICoach drove him away or is it speculation.

LaVon has a lot on his plate. He's a dad and works three jobs on top of playing football. Could have any number of things that caused him to leave.

But I still stand by my statement that we'll see more players who will leave by the end of November.

LeVon is not a father and was not working any jobs at the time because of the Scholarship that Ianello gave him and that he earned. He was driven off of the team by Ianello and his ways. This I know from a very credible source. For a student/athlete such as LeVon Morefield to leave the program after winning a National Award for sticking it out at the program for 4 years prior, is definitely a statement of how bad the program has become. Ianello is doing something terribly wrong if Rudy himself has left the program. I am very confident that more players will leave the program under Ianello, if not during the season than most certainly right after. Mark my words, watch and see.

PD article stated LeVon quit by texting his position coach. What an age we live in...

Too bad he couldn't stick it out...I think he'd have received a decent ovation from whomever might be at the Buffalo game for Senior day.

If we beat Buffalo...do the Zips put Ianello on their shoulders and carry him off the field, like the guys did with Faust after we won the 1993 Toilet Bowl?

When are we going to honor the Toilet Bowl team anyhow. Long overdue... :john:

Thanks for posting LeVon. Good luck in your future.
