Scrimmage vs. John Carrol

Who else is ready for basketball season to start?

Our scrimmage opponent is John Carroll. I found out that they are ranked #18 in Division III and return four starters. The last meeting between the Zips and the Blue Streaks (did they get that nickname from Cedar Point?) was in 1982.

They have some good players, but are a young team with only one senior. They brought in two JUCO forwards that will likely play against us. The two players to look out for are #21 and #15 for them. Not the tallest team we'll see, but they would probably give some MAC West teams a run for their money.

There are some middle school teams that would probably give some MAC West teams a run for their money.

Seriously though, can't take these games TOO lightly. I don't want a repeat of a couple years ago when we were all on the edge of our seat against an NAIA team in the exhibition opener. Not a fun feeling.

I work for a D3 school in the Ohio Athletic Confernce (the conference in which John Caroll Competes). I get to see them at least twice every year. In the last 2 years, they have been the team to beat in the conference and they made the NCAA touramnet both years.

They have a 10 player rotation and they use their depth real well. They have 2 sets of 5 players each. One set comes in for another every 4-5 minutes of play keeping them fresh the whole game. They apply full court pressure and run like there is no tomorrow.

All that being said, they're still a D3 school and the zips should have a nice walk in the park.

So how are the Polar Bears looking this year?

They're very very young. No seniors and only 2 juniors on the team. They have a great 2nd year coach in John Rhoades who worked with Geno Ford under Tim O'Shea at OU. So we'll see.

Thanks for your interest and appologies to those who don't care about them bears

JCU is actually a great team to scrimmage. Coach Moran is a great coach and has been a part of the Greater Cleveland basketball community forever. His St. Joseph HS teams were always fun to watch well prepared and hustled from whistle to whistle. It is definitely the type of team that is not going to come into the JAR intimadated and expecting to get beat. They will hustle and probably give Akron fits in parts of their game. I fully expect a 20+ point final score, but think the ability to work against a quality opponent like JCU will be good for the team.

Did anyone else think this comment was a bit arrogant?

''It's not a great exhibition game other than the fact Mike Moran has coached a hundred years and deserves to get a game like this,'' Dambrot said.

When I first read it I took it more as "we don't really want to play them in exhibition because they are pretty good and there is some potential there for an embarrasingly tight game and/or loss." However, I could see how it can be taken as a slap at John Carroll.

Honestly, the most interesting part of the article to me was the expectation that Abreu, Diggs and Euton would get the most playing time of the newcomers. I'm anxious to see which one of these new guys we will play and who is going to redshirt. Unfortunatly I won't be able to make it to the game tonight. Hope you guys can take some decent notes for me.

I liked the part about playing "crispy." Is it KFC night?

Nah, that was the scrimmage last weekend against The Colonels

Not in the least arrogant. Most coaches know and like each other. Dambrot is paying a form of

coaching respect. Which means, secondarily, that the Zips are NOT going to deliberately

run the Blue Streaks out of the gym.

Character counts ... and, KD has great character.

Didnt seem like a KD comment, maybe it is all in how you read it.

I just took it as him putting the Zips on a pedastle in "deserving to play a school like Akron" as if a less tenured coach at a school like JC would not be worthy of playing the Zips.

I mean we almost lost to Walsh two years ago?

I think the more likely explanation is one of respect for JCU basketball. His point is that we could have scheduled a much weaker opponent than JCU. ;)

51-24 half

Positives: Zeke, Steve, Dakota, Overall team defense. Also Alex looks pretty smooth out there but having a tough time getting them to drop. Quincy had a very impressive behind the back drive to the hoop. All three of the new guys have made a favorable impression on me.

Negatives: McClankahand, Will this guy ever step up and become a respectable D1 player ? Roberts also has shot it badly. Maybe I'm a little tough on Brett but he has yet to impress me in a Zips uniform.
