The Hermann Trophy semifinalist list was announced today. I 've heard guys like Bruin and Hertzog made it but I haven't heard anything about any of our guys. Has anyone else heard anything?

I heard that too, I've found one guy from UVA nominated and another from Cal, but haven't found a complete list. It's odd that there isn't anything on the Hermann website about it. I'll keep looking.

There are 15 semi-finalists. 1 from Cal, 1 from UVA, 1 from Butler, 1 from Monmouth, 1 from Maryland, IU's Will Bruin, PSU's Cory Hertzog, and Louisville's Colin Rolfe I can confirm so far. That leaves 7 spots.

Ok well I think we can just safely assume Akron has the other seven spots, even though we only had three guys on the watch list :D

Edit: Didn't realize Teal wasn't even on the watch list last year, meaning that really it doesn't matter who we had on the watch list, it could be completely different and we could have different guys pop up on the semifinalist list, or like I joked, actually have the remaining seven spots.

That being said, this article says that these two are the only guys to repeat being on the semifinalist list. If that is true, which it may or may not be, that would mean that Ampai is not on the list this year.

Does he really deserve to be?

If I picked our team MVP at the start of the season, Ampaipitakwong would be it. At this point, he's behind Sarkodie, Mattocks, Valentin, Nanchoff, and Nagbe in that order.

Well I found the list. Congrats to Kofi and Darlington! Akron is the only school with more than one player on the list, so I'd say that is just one more reflection as to how great this program is. I really hope Kofi wins this award. Yes he hasn't matched Corey Hertzog's 20 goals but he has scored 7 goals as a defender. He consistantly manages to be a huge attacking threat while still maintaing his duties at the right back position. Hopefully it doesn't just go to the guy with most goals like it did last year...how cheap was that? ;)

Don't forget about the upperclassmen awards! Kofi, Ampai, and Nagbe all named to the first team, Zarek on the second team. No school was represented on the first team list more than once except for Maryland with two and Akron with three.

I guess we'll get to see the player of the year in action tomorrow, as AJ Soares was given the award. Also, Ken Lolla received coach of the year

Unfortunately, the winner of the Hermann Trophy isn't usually announced until the second week of January. Could be the reason we're not having a recognition ceremony for the team until around then. Wouldn't it be nice to recognize that accomplishment as well, assuming Nagbe wins?

Awesome! I'm pleasantly surprised. I thought Darlington's "moderate" numbers would work against him in this. His importance to what has likely been the most talented team in NCAA history must have been the greater consideration by the voters. Congrats, Darlington!!

Some interesting facts about the Hermann:

The Hermann Trophy and the M.A.C. Player of the Year Award merged in 2002, so the following stats take both into account:

  • The most Hermann trophy's for one school in a row is five for St. Louis from '69-'73. Though I wonder if that's a bit of home bias?
  • For women the record is four, and by UNC. Someone by the name of Mia Hamm won two of them.
  • The school that has won the most overall is Indiana who has won seven, though in 1994 Todd Yeagley won the Hermann and teammate Brian Maisonneuve won the M.A.C. POTY. So Six Hermann's and one M.A.C. POTY technically.
  • The Mid-American Conference school with the most other than Akron is Hartwick, who shares the lead with the Zips with two (1976: Glenn Myernick, 1977: Billy Gazonas).

Really should be three straight, always felt Zakuani lost out because Akron wasn't a big enough soccer "name" at the time. Ironically, that may now be completely flipped and helped Nagbe.

The award is well deserved. Darlington has been, is, and will be an excellent overall asset to any side. He was the best and most consistent player on the 2010 Zips. (A nod must also go to Perry Kitchen.)

Teal Bunbury’s winning the award last year is open to greater dispute, in my opinion.

Nagbe will play offensive MF (in the hole) in the pros, similar to Ampai’s role with on the Zips. It will be exciting to see how he fits into the national team picture.

Congrats, Dar! You will never pick-up the check in this town. :thumb:

To MDZip’s point: I cannot immediately recall who beat out Steve Zakuani for the 2008 Hermann Trophy.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that Darlington didn't deserve it. I merely had some concerns that the voters might not see it that way based solely on individual scoring statistics. I'm grateful they rewarded him based on his worth to the 2010 Zips!
