Soccer lingo

"square pass/flat pass" - A ball that is passed on the ground to another teammate, parallel with the center and end lines. Like a cross but not in scoring range.

"cross" - a ball that that is played across the mouth of the goal, parallel with the center and end lines, to set up a shot in scoring range. A type of square pass.

"howler" - particularly egregious goalkeeping error that allows a goal (see Soffner's pass out of the back to Mattocks last week or Clint Dempsey's goal on Robert Green during this past summer's World Cup).

"challenge" - tackling your opponent in an attempt to win the ball.

"the spot" - the 12-yard marker where a penalty kick is taken.

"brace" - player scores two goals in a match.
