The Trip to Cali

You guys ever see what the Gauchos fans did when they won the title a few years ago?

Yeah...

Who's with me?

Thanks RootforRoo44...that's what they were referring to on their board when they stated they would give any Akron fans directions for the best route to chuck something in the ocean! I'm with you...awesome!

Also, word is the U wont be helping students in any way to get out there so I dont expect many Rowdies.

First, I want to give you high compliments for the College Cup Guide you posted on ASN. I know how much time it takes to do that kind of research, and yours is really well done. Zips fans are really fortunate to have someone like you making the effort to do this. I wish something like this had been available when I flew out to Portland two years ago to see the Zips play in the first round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Second, I'm wondering if you had any expectations for UA helping students in any way to get to Santa Barbara. The reason I ask is because I'm not aware of any university that helps students get to a tournament so far away. It's obviously not as easy as chartering a bus for a one-day trip up to the Motor City Bowl, for example. I just wonder if you know of other universities somehow helping students in a situation similar to this, and what kind of assistance was provided. If there's a precedent somewhere, it should at least be brought to UA's attention for future consideration.

They paid for my hotel and bus to North Carolina last year. And they have been working on working something out for the last several days. Rumblings were that it was going to cost $200 which included flight and hotel but they decided not to help today.

1) Thank you, it took a little bit of time but hopefully it helps a few people have an awesome time out in Cali.

2) I dont really expect UA to help at all, and i dont know of any universities that would or have done it. The only precedent would be last year busing everyone down there, but obviously it's a bit different this year.

I was thinking today that a great thing would be to get one of those big companies in Akron (Goodyear, GoJo, Infocision) to sponsor the Rowdies and subsidize or pay for the trips (just plane flights) for at least the final. They could also have custom Rowdies shirts made and have their company name front and center on the chests of them and back. Not only would it be great publicity for the company as it would surely be picked up by a ton of media outlets, but it would also be on television each time they showed the rowdies, which would be alot. The easy thing about the whole plan is the airport is literally within walking distance (and sight) of Harder Stadium.

So there's my solution and it would cost about 300 dollars per person. 30,000 dollars to fly 100 of the top rowdies (selected by the group by who's gone to the most events), and i guarantee that would be cheaper than any television ad.

When news broke that the University wouldn't help in any way get students to the game or subsidize the costs, it was a major deal breaker to me. I could have easily done $200-$300 for this, but to be forced into shelling out twice, if not almost 3x that is almost insane and completely impossible for a student in my position. Instead Ill be watching at Tap House. Here's to hoping the College Cup is a little closer to home next year.

I just found out yesterday that I will be making the trip. Leaving Thursday night, returning Monday night. I can't wait!

I am mostly hoping that there are no Penalty Kick Shootouts. Nothing is stupider in all of sports, I don't like them. Plus, I almost had to go straight home and change my pants on Saturday after the Cal game.

I am also hoping that at least some Rowdies come out, I will be ready.

My question is: IS ZIPPY GOING?!

EDIT:

Talked to a few people i know, one of whom is someone who would know the answer to this (hint hint).

It seems that Zippy will NOT be taking her talents to Santa Barbara. Now this isn't 100% yet but the person i heard this from has good reason to tell the truth on this one and would be the first person to know if Zippy was or was not going.

Not supporting students who want to go is one thing (and like i said, i dont think the U should be expected to help pay for students), BUT the school's mascot?!

This is just ridiculous, and I hope ZN.o can create a firestorm on this matter that gets UA to do the right thing.

It's nice to hear that UA helped last year, and unfortunate to hear they couldn't swing it this year. Maybe the story will eventually come out as to why they couldn't put some kind of discount package together for students. Airline tickets to the West Coast can be a killer. The cost of flying to Portland two years ago for the Zips-Gonzaga basketball tournament game was pretty steep.

My sources say that the students trying to get funds from the university were told that the trip "wasn't academic"

Gaucho Loco here. Congrats on making the Cup (again). Of course part of me wishes we played you in Akron and knocked you off so we would have a home college cup, but we won't get into that. Congrats again and thanks for beating Berkeley. Just wanted to throw some answers and comments your way, especially for those coming.

First off, if you are truly passionate about your team, do all in your power to find the funds to go. I regret to this day not making the trip to St. Louis in 06. A couple hundred dollars was a lot to me back then especially being a poor college student, but I later realized how fast one can make that back. Keep in mind that Christmas is right around the corner ;)

I know some are upset that the Cup is in Cali, but how do you think we felt for many years when the Cup was Midwest/East??? It has been a goal since 05 to get the Cup out to SB and we are very stoked to have it. Everything comes together from the weather, the scenery, and the facility. Those that make the trip won't be disappointed and those watching from home will hate the fact that they don't see 30 degree weather, rain, or snow.

Many Locos are planning on giving their support to Akron as has been mentioned. A few factors are the fact that you knocked out Berkeley and that you're a mid-major like us. Throw in you haven't won a Championship and all that jazz and you have some fans. There has been mentioning of buying beer for the Locos and that is always welcomed. The more drunk we are, the better chance we have of being Zips for a day/weekend.

Other than all of that feel free to reach out to anyone here or on the Loco board. We will help make your trip to SB memorable that's for sure. We also decided to create a Supporters Summit so feel free to check it out and join on Facebook:

Zips and Gaucho Locos,

The Roo has landed!

I will be in touch with the Loco contingent. Hope I can make it to Anacapa tomorrow night. About to head out to discover the California Condor at the Santa Barbara Zoo, and look for a secret entrance to Bellosguardo, the palatial estate of Huguette Clark, the 104 y.o. copper heiress.

My first trip to the Cali Riviera, but certainly not my last. Plan to visit with Hawaii-born winemaker Mikael Sigouin, Chief Winemaker at Beckmen's Wine in Santa Ynez tomorrow. Love his "look Me In the Eye Red".

Zippy not being present at another opportunity for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP is a joke. One night's tip on YouBoob Tom's self-indulgent wining, dining and schmoozing tab would cover Zippy's travel costs. Penny-wise, pound-foolish Tom. Can't wait to see the door hit you on the a$$ on your way out of town someday soon. Idiot ...
