Nikola is getting flat abused by ORU's frontcourt players. Justin Greene has to be watching this and salivating. It looks like Nik is moving in quicksand out there. Zeke is doing his best to clean up Nik's mistakes, but at some point our "leader" needs to man up and at least try to stay in front of someone.

I have NEVER seen this big of a choke job down the stretch. Zips don't deserve to win this game.

Growing pains, I'm afraid. If Alex plays it smart (or KD protects him a little better), the Zips may have won this one going away. Nevertheless, they gutted it out against a team that is much better than their record. Bring on K.E.N.T, because we all know:

Even at this early venture in his career it is abundantly clear that Alex is a HUGE key for this team. I'll go so far as to say that he may be more important to the Zips success than Zeke is at this point. Zeke is still a bit of a luxury at this point. When he's on, it's big for the Zips, but if he isn't, the Zips can still win games. Alex is a necessity. When he's out on the floor, the Zips offense runs smoothly. When he's not on the floor, the Zips offense stagnates and the defensive pressure becomes almost non-existant. I know it is a lot to ask of a true freshman, but I feel like this years Zips team is going to go as far Alex can carry them.

I thought you were a longtime Zips fan. Tonight looked like many Zips games I've seen over the years. ;)

The Zips have a hard time matching up with really quick teams, and every player on the ORU team was quicker than the Zips players defending them. This really showed up on transition defense, where ORU punished the Zips badly for being late getting back on defense. I'll give the Zips credit for playing good D at the very end when getting stops was critical.

The Zips were embarassingly soft on the boards, as ORU outrebounded them about 2:1. Fortunately, ORU had about 3 times as many turnovers, which evened things out. But no one has stepped in to fill Jimmy Conyers' shoes on rebounding, and if the Zips can't find someone who really goes after rebounds, they're not going to be able to make up the difference in turnovers in most games.

One thing for sure that was proven again tonight is that the Zips are a different team with Rico on the floor. In a way it was good that he fouled out tonight, because it demonstrated how critical it is to have him available at all times when the Zips offense starts to struggle. McNees and Roberts are both seniors who are steady and reliable. But Rico brings an added dimension, and the Zips can't afford to have him foul out. As much as KD wants his players to play tough defense, it can really bite you when the refs go whistle crazy.

I agree with Dave, Rico is the key to this team. When he is on the court the Zips have the kind of ball movement and defensive attitude that has been lacking for a while. He is still a freshman, but the Zips have finally found their true point guard.

Not much to add this morning that hasn't already been said. Would have liked to have seen a better performance out of the Zips headed into the rivalry game, particularly on defense, but it is still hard to complain about a win. You can bet KD is going to have the guys doing some serious work on interior defense this week. Nik especially was terrible last night. ORU's big guys played him with spin moves and drop steps to the point that Nik didn't know where anyone was. We can't keep relying on Alex creating turnovers out front and Zeke cleaning up everyone's mistakes on the back end. At some point our other guys have to step up and play some defense. Hopefully Saturday will be the night. I really have no idea what to expect out of this Can't matchup. Having not seen either team against a conference opponent yet makes this one very unpredictable.

My poster/schedule/magnet/billboard marketing campaign for next year has a photo of AA & Z with the title "RICO & THE MAN"

(we can probably only market to the 35ish and older group though) :D
