Good article, but once again "What is it about Akron, and more specifically, Porter, that makes that small school a factory of top-flight soccer talent?". What the heck does the small school comment mean? It means the writer really knows very little about Akron. At the very least, I think he likely meant "less well known" school or something like that. But small school? That makes no sense.

Awesome read that provides great insight as to why Nagbe justly won the Hermann! Thanks for posting it, Zip_ME87!

I've been thinking back to two-plus years ago. Darlington Nagbe was not as heavily recruited as most of Akron's players in his class. He had not been a US Youth Residency player, not even as far as I can recall in any US international youth pools. The two Cleveland area strikers who were highly regarded that year were Darlington, and at the time I thought a bit above him, Michael Green, who ended up at New Mexico. How much of it is "the system"? In other words, if Darlington had gone to Albuquerque, and Green to Akron, would Green be the Hermann winner now in MLS? Makes you think, doesn't it? :D

Kind of in answer to your musings, ZIP...

Agudelo and Bunbury

"In Bunbury’s case, it was Caleb Porter’s college soccer factory at the University of Akron that prepped him for MLS and the US National Team. The path represents a bit of the “old” ways of MLS, as Bunbury entered the League through the draft with all of its quirky American-ness.

It’s a system that hasn’t yet outlived it’s usefulness - despite talk that its influence is waning - thanks in part to the type of success Porter is having at Akron. The Zips just won their first national championship in 2010 and show no signs of slowing down as the new power of collegiate soccer. As long as Porter sticks around, the school should continue to churn out stars.

Before Bunbury, Akron produced speedy Sounders winger Steve Zakuani. This year, the Zips supplied five of the first eight players selected at the 2011 edition of the SuperDraft. An Akron wave is in full swing, with Bunbury at its forefront.

Porter has proven that he has an eye for talent and a knack for developing it. MLS will reap the benefits as long as he can keep it going. Bunbury, now a National Team prospect and seemingly on the verge of a breakout year with Sporting Kansas City, is the natural poster boy for the continued relevance of college soccer in general terms. He's also the standard bearer for the influx of Akron talent in more specific ones."

MAIN CAMPUS

1. OHIO STATE = 53000 STUDENTS

2. UNIVERSITY OF CINCINATTI = 38000 STUDENTS

3. UNIVERSITY OF AKRON = 29700 STUDENTS

1. OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY = 23700 STUDENTS

2. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON = 23,389 STUDENTS

DEFINE SMALL SCHOOL AGAIN????

I don't understand how Oregon State and the U of Oregon can be 1. and 2. when Ohio State and Cincy are already 1. and 2.

I think the rankings are within their respective states.

Regardless of whether or not folks understand the size of The University of Akron, I love all of the "press" that we are getting. Here's another article from Chivas USA Training Camp about Zarek Valentin, where Caleb Porter and The University of Akron are mentioned a few times.

Agree on the positive press side of things, but I'd like for them to also point out this is a respected institution of higher learning, not "Southwest Central Tech" that just by random chance happens to be churning out all of these great soccer players. Part of the reason that happens is the support of a University that has the resources and student body to provide it.

+10

Also:

There is a long standing, if not widely known, soccer tradition @ Akron. The roots are as deep here as any place in America. Ask not how did this happen; rather ask what took so long?

Chivas 1, San Jose 0

CARSON, Calif. (Monday, February 7, 2011) – Chivas USA earned a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in the club’s first match against MLS competition of the 2011 preseason, with forward Alan Gordon scoring the game’s only goal. The Red-and-White now have two wins and no losses during preseason, and have yet to concede a goal in 195 minutes of play.

In a match that consisted of three 35-minute periods, Chivas USA came out with a strong lineup and nearly took an early lead when midfielder Blair Gavin, playing his first game since returning from a hamstring injury in 2010, placed a header on net that was saved by San Jose’s Jon Busch. Both teams then traded chances, with Bobby Convey forcing a good save out of Chivas goalkeeper Zach Thornton, and Paulo Nagamura sliding a low shot just wide.

The Red-and-White gained the lead midway through the second session when Alan Gordon received a chip behind the defense played by Victor Estupiñan. Gordon took a couple touches inside the box and then slotted a shot past the San Jose goalkeeper and into the net to give Chivas USA the advantage. It was Gordon’s second goal of the preseason, and the assist went to Estupiñan, who had also scored in the Red-and-White’s first match against the Fresno Fuego.

Chivas USA will have tomorrow off before returning to training on Wednesday and Thursday at The Home Depot Center. On Friday the team travels to Phoenix, Arizona, where it will scrimmage against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.
