UNC Head Coaching Job

Recommended Posts

Can we get any of UNC's recruits? They have some good ones.

Do we have room???

From Top Drawer Soccer.............

Despite finishing in a tie for second (behind AkronTop Drawer Soccer) in our chat audience poll asking who had the best incoming class, North Carolina has garnered the most Top 100 players with six. Jordan McCrary, Darvin Ebanks, Miguel Lopez, Ryan Dodson, Jon Ray and Cooper Vandermaas will all be donning the Carolina blue.

Doubt it happens for a couple of reasons:

1. School has to release players once they sign LOI. If player leaves without official release then they must sit out Freshman year. I seriously doubt UNC would release any of these guys

2. I believe that several are from North carolina and environs so they may not wanna leave UNC.

BTW...in response to the question of whether Porter leaves for UNC a "very reliable source" at Zips soccer program said "Haha no" a little while ago.

With the National Championship in hand at a soccer school, why would Coach Porter leave? I was at the UNC game this year. Their fans and facilities don't come close to comparing to ours!

His situation couldn't be improved by going to another school. The only thing I see Coach Porter leaving for is Head Coach of the Men's National Team.

I think we (Akron) had something to do with this. Maybe we inspired him with the amount of support our program gets from the university and the community. Maybe he wanted to go to a school where his program could be #1 instead of way in the background no matter how successful it becomes. He was the Head Coach at UNC for 22 years. Arguably the most successful coach in the country during that span. You don't leave that without a good reason.

Oh, and of course Porter's name is coming up all over the message boards. Their attention would be better focused finding a more realistic candidate.

There is an Akron alum who is head coach of a solid Coastal Carolina program who I recommended to the administration for Ken Lolla's position. We are very lucky to have Coach Porter, and I am glad things worked out the way they did. However, I think Shaun Docking would be a great fit for UNC because he already knows the NC area and has done great things with a small scale program. He also has the Akron soccer brand on his resume, which can't hurt either. :thumb::NCAAC:

Shaun Docking would be fine choice for UNC. Remember him as a player in 1986? Coach Parker moved him from forward to defender for his senior year.

The match vs. hated Indiana was moved to Buchtel Field because LJF was too muddy. We had not beaten them in like …. forever. The crowd was kept from the field only by ropes.

That was perhaps the dirtiest collegiate match I have ever seen.

Let’s just say that Mr. Docking’s uniform required cleaning afterward. Dude was a baad man that afternoon!

Can you remember the score?

I am kind of disappointed. Where are Z.I.P. and MDZip to comment on this?

It will but he's not going anywhere. I'm a little shocked that Bolowich left for Creighton (/sarcasm font - a fine school but they're no vaunted ACC school /end sarcasm font).

I wish I could count the number of times I've said that I was sure a coach wouldn't leave his current post.

For most coaches I will absolutely agree with you, but Porter is absolutely not your average coach. The man definitely marches to the beat of his own drummer (with the AK-Rowdies cheering in the background) so I would be stunned if he takes the UNC job. As a matter of fact I will send you $50 for a psuedo-nice dinner if Caleb is anyone else's head coach next fall.

And to cut RootforRoo's disappointment in half for now, Docking is doing a heck of a job at Coastal Carolina, I just don't think he's done it for long enough to be a proven commodity which would be my guess what UNC is going to look for. We sort of had to take a chance an uproven coach when Porter was hired (thank God we did), UNC does not (and at this point we might not either when we need a new one - hopefully a long time from now). I think Docking will get a look in a year or two from some bigger programs because I expect he will continue his success, just not someone on the level of UNC yet.

By the way, I saw a note on a Creighton message board saying it is the only sport in which they could conceivably win a National title. Maybe we have some more common ground for Bracketbusters? Who'd have thought we'd be the "haves"?

Apparently that Creighton board head was not aware of the Dental School's absolute ownership of the "Root Canal Olympics" where the Jays have swept the "Bleeding Gum Awards" four years running. :D

I'm extra-busy this time of year. Surf and Turf -- soccer season ya know. Anyways, its kind of ironic that Creighton poaches UNC's 22-year HC , since they were crying about Penn State stealing their own long-running coach just a year ago. The coaching vagaries in the NW -- did they play into DeAndre Yedlin's decision to abandon his "hometown" for the Midwest, Tank?

It's been nearly a decade, BTW, since the Zips have made an appearance in the NW. I'd look for it to recur in the next 2-3 yrs. Someone in PDX has a nice pad waiting for Caleb's crew to land. ;)

Honestly, no. He wanted to win a national championship and play professionally. This is the place to do that. Once he knew that there was mutual interest there was no other place he was going to go.

Awesome. I look forward to seeing him play in the Fall.
