Captain Kangaroo
You never win this award when your team is a favorite. You win it when your team is near the bottom of the pre- or early-season heap. The 2010-11 Zips fit that description. The Zips new-found defensive prowess...the emergence of Cventinovic as a dependable stud...Diggs getting increased PT and wreaking havoc...the move to bring Abreu off the bench and start McNees at PG...and a home stretch re'sume' featuring some nice wins over upper-tier MAC teams...it looks like this could be his year? Who'da thunk it only a couple weeks ago? It will be really interesting to see how the Zips fare against the Blue Jays this Saturday. KD has the rap of not being able to beat marquee Bracket Buster opponents, getting beaten twice by VCU and Nevada. And also losing to a bad Valpo squad. Was the Austin Peay loss also a Bracket Buster return game? I forget. Creighton isn't having their typical strong mid-major season, but they're above .500 in the MVC. It would be a nice win for the Zips, the MAC, and also push KD's late COTY surge a little more towards being a no-brainer decision.

I will trade MAC COTY awards for NCAA Championships all day! Seriously though, if KD wins 4 of the next 6 or more and makes the MACC game (regardless of outcome), he's got my vote. The turnaround has been night and day. More than anything, this proves to me he can coach. It is easy to stand back and watch your more talented team win, but it takes a true teacher and coach to right the ship. Way to go KD! I believe. Oh, and of course,
GP1
The Zips would have to finish higher in the standings for this to happen. A very helter skelter season. They could continue to get better or they could play like they did in January. Time will tell.
The Hip Zip
My vote goes to Earnie Zeigler Year after year he has the Chippathugs in contention for a for a ten seed. I think that a coach should be measured by his consistancy. Seriously, Keith has a great shot if we continue on our recent path. It is always impressive for a coach to turn around a season like he's doing now. His persistence and belief in the guys is really starting to pay off. Charlie Coles is highly alive for this honor as well. The Redhawks have suffered through a lot of key injuries this year but he still has Miami right there in the mix. I suspect though that Miami's bubble is about to burst so why not Keith ?
MDZip
It is pretty amazing how much success the Zips have had since Keith became coach and yet he has never won coach of the year. Zips seem to do their best work in years when the lest is expected of them under Dambrot. This is the year!
