akronzips71 Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 THAT was some nailbiter! Two down, two to go for a trip to the dance. That would be a nice sendoff for the seniors and Nik. AND WTF is up with everyone fouling out? Quote
K92 Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 THAT was some nailbiter! I hear ya! I have nothing left but bloody nubs. I am glad I didn't go to work today. What a game. Quote
Kangaroo Craig Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Great that our guys pulled it out, but it should have never been that close. Missed layups, fouling your opponent in the act of shooting a 3 (Twice), and oh yeah, blowing a 20 point lead in the second half. Ugh! Time to get some rest and prepare for Western Michigan. I have a feeling that this tournament is going to come down to Akron and Can't in the final. Quote
GP1 Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Today was a good example of how hard it is to come back from being behind by a ton AND win. A team can come back, but it is physically and mentally exhausting to do so. Quote

GoZips Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 The heck with all the ups and downs. It was a great game. What we need to take away from this game is that the Zips "have game". They played their hearts out and over came their mistakes. This is the first time this season that they played like they want it all. Zips, go get it. btw: just a thought, I believe the Zips played themselves in a post season game today. Quote

However, I agree that the team should definitely be in SOMETHING now. With so many teams in the post-season (120+) you would think any mid-major with 20 wins would have it made. Shrug. Quote

Been there done that with a better team and more wins than this year. The MAC gets no respect. The DANCE is the one that counts, I would take the NIT in a heartbeat, but that is out of reach I think. Those other tourneys are really not worth much of anything. When I was listening I thought that Nik had played his last game as a Zip. Hopefully, at least three more to go. Quote
phil Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Another great game at the Q!! I thought Akron played great D the first half but also Miami looked really tight. I knew that it would not last the entire game. It was great that McClanahan had a career game. He found his shot after struggling the last few games and carried the team with his shooting. McKnight also played strong in the overtime and had a great steal before he got hard fouled. This team showed a lot of character after Miami took the lead. They did not fold but kept fighting. There were some big time shots and rebounds in the overtimes. They also controlled the boards most of the game. I am hoping that McNees, Nik or Zeke to have a big game tomorrow. Even though they played 2 overtimes, this team does not want their season to end. Go Zips!! Quote

The NIT was certainly out of the question even before this tournament started. I said this in another thread...we are going to be viewed by ALL of the selection committees as the 6th best team in the MAC, with 12 losses and a poor SOS. Even if we make it to the title game and lose, we do nothing more than add a 13th loss. I'll be shocked is that draws attention from anybody. Quote

Even when Miami was coming back, I had total confidence the Zips would win. Being down 28-10 or whatever the halftime score was is extremely difficult to come back from. It's like being down 1-0 at half of a soccer game...the mountain of point is too hard to close the gap on. Quote

In the CAA finals the other night VCU was down as many as many as 18 in the second half before cutting it to 1 with about 4 minutes to play. They never regained the lead and lost by 5. Great comeback, but there was nothing left in the tank. Quote

My wife and I talked about the same thing last night. When a team has a big lead, you have to expect the other team to come out swinging like crazy in the second half. It happens in the NBA all the time. The key is to keep your composure and weather the storm. The game may have gone into OT, but it looks like the Zips did just that. All you have to do is win and it doesn't matter how you do it. I'm sure that game was well worth the price of admission for anyone at the game last night. The last time the Zips won the MAC, they did it in a season when they shouldn't have. I have a feeling this may be one of those years. The Great GP1 guarantees a win tonight (don't ask me about Saturday yet) for the Zips. Take it to the bank. I feel as confident about the Zips winning tonight as I did yesterday late in regulation. skip-zip Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 It's no secret that teams can wear down when trying to fight back from a large deficit. BUT, this was far from a typical scenario. 1) The team with the lead was shooting poorly, to say the least. 2) The team with the lead was shooting early in the shot clock on several occassions, and not making the team trying to come back have to work nearly as hard on the defensive end as they could have made them work. 3) The team with the lead was having to extend the playing time of too many of its own players because of foul trouble. If I have to come away from a crazy game like this with two conclusions, I'd have to say that we just did an awful job of managing a 20-point lead, and that we were simply just the better conditioned team. We got about 3/4 of our rebounds in this game from guys OTHER THAN Zeke and Nik. Guys like McKnight and McClanahan pulled Herculean efforts out there. What a game. Quote

Valpo Zip Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Why is this a season the zips aren't supposed to win? The zips currently have 5 players in their last year with the program. Can't's roster has 9 first year players out of 13. They are the ones who are inexperienced in the MAC. We will be young next year and Can't will have their whole team (except Rodriguez) back. So repeat after me : this is our year! Quote
