meatwad Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 I despise Pat Forde and his love for everything "major" in college hoops (aka Kentucky), but this article was well written and well researched. Glad that the folks on ESPN are giving more credit to Dambrot and UA for his chance as a coach then just attributing it to one year under Donovan at Florida. Thanks for sharing. Quote
Dr Z Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Nice article. I'm starting to get jealous/annoyed with KD talking about Shaka in the Final 4 and it's NOT Akron. Step it up KD...BE LIKE SHAKA!!! Quote
Hilltopper Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Dambrot and the Zips have gotten a lot of good press this week because of Shaka and VCU. Quote
Zip Watcher Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 The press this week about Shaka, showing that he's from among other things, the KD coaching tree .. will prove absolutely invaluable to the Zips down the road. I may have gone to UConn .. but I really hope VCU wins the title .. it could help the Zips by association. Quote
UA Fan Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 http://www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/conte...l?cxtype=fb_mlt Shaka is apparently a part of everyone's coaching tree.. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Shaka declined the NC State job and says he's going to remain at VCU. Quote
Blue & Gold Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Shaka declined the NC State job and says he's going to remain at VCU. He got an 8-year extension. I'm not sure how much it is for. But this is good for mid-major basketball. Brad Stevens also seems very happy/content @ Butler. Mark Few @ Gonzaga. Good stuff. I guess these guys are the types of guys who realize $$$ isn't everything? Quote

I guess these guys are the types of guys who realize $$$ isn't everything? There is no way he sees the end of that contract. If he continues to do well at VCU, he will leave. Ask yourself, where would he have gone at the moment? What open jobs are even attractive? NC State? UNLV? Those are really not the best jobs in the world, despite the money NCState could throw up. Stevens I think will only leave for one of the top tier programs and guiding Butler to back to back national title games certainly makes him an attractive option for on of those schools. Quote
Zip Watcher Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 There's a couple of ways to land an elite job in coaching: - Be successful at a stepping stone program and move on to a better paying high-major. - Turn the program you're at into an elite program. Shaka & Stevens are on their way to the second approach. Both make big money where they're at. That reduces some of the motivation to take a bottom feeding BCS gig. Quote
Dr Z Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 I'm not sure how much it is for.The school said Monday that Smart has agreed to a new eight-year contract at VCU. Details of that deal will be released once the contract is signed, but a source told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the new deal will pay Smart $1.2 million in base pay annually. Quote
Blue & Gold Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 $1.2 million annually?!?! Good grief, where does VCU get that kind of money? Say, hypothetically, KD gets the Zips to the Final Four two years in a row, ala Brad Stevens. Is there any possible way UA could offer that kind of money? Quote

Say, hypothetically, KD gets the Zips to the Final Four two years in a row, ala Brad Stevens. Is there any possible way UA could offer that kind of money? They get that kind of money from two sources. The first is the NCAA payout for making it that far into the tournament. The second is from all the alumni and fans who have just crawled out of the woodwork to buy merchandise. Quote

That second approach could be called the "Caleb Porter method". Quote
