More Soccer roster changes

According to Michael Beaven, Ben Speas and Martin Ontiveros have left the team. This is on top of Tulloch, Genovesi, Diaz. Jr. and Diego Navarrete having already left.

I did like this quote: "Zips coach Caleb Porter was unavailable for comment. He is out of the country on a recruiting trip."

He had better be out recruiting! At this rate we won't be able to put 11 players on the field.

I don't think there's an issue with that looking at the remaining roster. It is disconcerting to lose a player with Ben Speas' experience (gozips.com bio below). Also, not noted, Ben was the only sub in the 2010 National Championship win vs Louisville. Best wishes Ben if you happen to read this.

as a Sophomore (2010): Appeared in all 25 games, including four starts ... finished with two goals, including the game-winner against Western Michigan (Oct. 23), and three assists ... also found the net in a 2-1 win at Hartwick in the regular-season finale (Nov. 6) ... earned a start in the championship game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament against Western Michigan (Nov. 14) ... recorded an assist in a 4-0 win against the Broncos.

as a Freshman (2009): Appeared in all 25 games ... named to College Cup All-Tournament Team ... started 11 contests, including both the NCAA semifinal and final … played all 110 minutes against Virginia in the national championship game (Dec. 13) ... logged 95 minutes against North Carolina in the semifinal (Dec. 11) ... scored his first career goal against Bowling Green (Sept. 26) ... found the net against in a win at Florida Atlantic (Oct. 3) … recorded two assists against Cincinnati (Sept. 13) … added another helper at Michigan (Oct. 20) ... College Soccer News Freshman Top 100 list.

Losing Speas hits the hardest. You could pretty much pencil him in as a starter for next season.

Genovesi still gets to contribute to an excellent MAC championship squad for Track. Can't blame him for wanting to focus on a single sport.

Navarette probably had a language barrier he couldn't overcome. Tulloch was beat out of his position. I don't know much about Diaz or Ontiveros.

If you look at the positions, we lost four forwards and two mids. So the logjam at forward is no longer an issue.

I think that part of this probably just comes with the territory of recruiting the top players in the country. When they realize they aren't going to get the playing time they feel they deserve, they'd rather transfer to a school where they can start. Speas on the other hand confuses me. Personally, I thought he deserved more playing time last year, but it looked like he was going to get his chance this year...

Ben's departure comes as a shocking development. He could start for any university in America. Does anyone have confirmation of Beaven's story? I know we have a couple folks close to the Speas family. Give us your piece.

I think the main thought process should be, "this is what happens when you have a high caliber team". We are going to continue to have Freshman that enter the program and start from the get-go, and this pushes aside a Sophomore, Junior or Senior. The players that have been leaving were probably told by Porter that they need to increase their level of play or they will be helping the team through the practice squad roll.

Speas does supprise me but hindsite being 20/20: he played more his Freshman year than he did his Sophmore year. I am going to go on the assumption that Porter had a long talk with him and determined that he probably was not going to see significant playing time. We all know Porter likes a "controling style" and Speas seems to be more of a "get and go" and kind of lacks pure position. All and all he is a great player and if he chooses to go somewhere else he will do well.

I am beginning to think that this years recruiting class could be like the Freshman class of 2009 (Barson, Meves, Caldwell, Valentine, Speas, etc) where they were all expected to start and make huge contributions..... for the most part they all did with the exception of Speas (except for the Final Four).

I keep thinking that Porter knows what he is doing and wants to do what is best for the players, even if it is telling a strong player like Speas that he probably will not start and if he wants full 90 playing time he may want to seek another program.

Exactly. Dagilis is a great example of this. Started in 2008, but was pushed to the bench by the likes of Barson and Valentin.

Hopefully this class pans out better than last years' recruiting class. That group looked to be really good, but now look what we have left from them:

Reinaldo Brenes - hopefully can produce a lot this year

Richard Diaz, Jr. - gone

Gabriel Genovesi - gone

Perry Kitchen - got a great year out of him, but gone

Darren Mattocks - kinda concerned how he'll perform without the service around him he had last year

Andrian McAdams - I understand the desire for three GKs on the roster, but surprised he's not gone, he's not going to play

Martin Ontiveros - gone

McKauly Tulloch - gone

Maybe Porter knew that class didn't need to be good because of how many returners he had. I'm expecting a lot from Trapp, Gallego, and Yedlin though.

Here's a little fun fact: There was a point (not sure if it was when he graduated, or maybe earlier) that Ben Speas was ranked as Top Drawer Soccer's #1 player in his graduating class. Still shocked that he is leaving. It wasn't even a month ago that I was pieing him in the face

I am looking forward to the season and seeing who all is on the team! The only way I would worry is if Barson and Caldwell sign contracts with their respective MLS teams.

Caldwell said in a article after the Championship that he wanted his degree from Akron so I am hoping he stays his 4 years. I was told that Barson was offered a contract with the Columbus Crew this past year but declined and also have been told other MLS teams have inquired.

Needless to say Porter and company will but up to the 2011 challenge!

Top Drawer put Ben at #1 before his senior year of HS, after a year at Bradenton, and before he suffered the final season-ending leg injury during Development Academy Finals that prevented him from playing that senior season at his HS (Stow?).

CVCA as a matter of fact.

I thought when UA signed Ben that he was Top Drawer Soccer's #1 in his class. (Edit: I just read ZIP's post which makes more sense given that Ben missed his final year playing at CVCA due to injury.) I hope he left because he found a way into the pro ranks with the Crew (as a homegrown), but I don't know if that's possible at this time.

In answer to my own question, it is possible at this time...Horton is Crew's first homegrown player

That significantly weakens Louisville, especially with their drug issues. Good for the Zips.

If this is true, Speas is a major loss. All the other defections can be sustained. I wonder at the circumstances surrounding this.

How did Speas look this Spring? Porter did not seem to be at all pleased with the performance of the team this Spring. Might that have something to do with his departure? Didn't Baloguin spend a alot of time at MF this Spring...maybe that had something to do with it?

One thing to remember is that according to ESPNRise they have added Dominic Bonilla (HS Senior) and Aodhan Quinn (MVC Freshman of the Year at Bradley). Neither of those guys were on the Akron release.

I know that Quinn plays MF what about Bonilla? No matter what it will be sorted out by the beginning of August ;)

I think Bonilla is also a midfielder, and yeah Balogun spent most of him time in the midfield but he plays as a holding mid and that should not have impacted Speas' playing time

So what are we looking at now (The midfield is not in position, just the four names)?

Holmes Mattocks

Quinn Trapp Caldwell Balogun

Mayer Barson Gallego Yedlin

Trapp Gallego and Yedlin are all me assuming, I dont know of anyone else on the roster who plays RB and Trapp/Gallego are u18 mainstays.
