First time I've seen Fenlason's name. I think this is the first Cali recruit! We are sure becoming a national program -- from FL to WA to MA to SoCal.

edit: Thanks Tank, just saw your post, above.

Here's a little bit more on Jake. Small but good numbers/experience.

Not sure if this was posted somewhere on ZN.o previously since it's 11 days old, but I couldn't find it and thought it worth sharing...

Academy product Caldwell trains with Revs

“It’s a great feeling,” said Caldwell when asked about his emotions watching his former teammates turn pro. “Knowing that Caleb’s such a great coach, producing such great players – obviously recruiting them and taking their game to the next level – I know it’s a great place to be.”

With that said, Caldwell plans to take a different path than many of his former teammates who left school early to pursue professional careers. Caldwell has stated his intention to finish his degree at Akron and play the final two years of his collegiate career.

Another name to add to this list is Jake Fenlason, a keeper from FC San Diego. He has committed according to ESPNRise. His coach is Aodhan Quinn's father. Coincidence?

What are we going to do with another GK? Meves is probably never going be taken out unless we are way ahead or he gets hurt. Poni is our backup. Andrian McAdams will probably never play as it is, why a fourth keeper?

I agree and don't understand why the kid would want to come to Akron and probably not play much or at all. Always amazes me when guys commit to programs that already have two or more experienced keepers. Especially one who is not a national level recruit.

Could it be that Caleb isn't 100% sold on Meves, and is bringing in competition to either spark, or supplant him?

I suppose this is possible but the kid from california isnt even playing for an academy level team. If porter was interested in a new keeper he would have been recruiting guys from the get go.

Rumor is that Speas is transferring to UNC. They are going to be really really good this year.

He wouldn't be able to play until 2012, correct?

I think that for soccer you can play immediately so long as you've never transfered previously.

Zach speaks the truth. The "One free transfer" rule applies.

According to Speas's FB wall, he is indeed transferring to UNC. What a great opportunity for him. Hope he does well as long as he's not playing the Zips.

If you wish to hate on a player that left the Zips for a competitor, you have my blessing.angel16.gif

Not mine. If not for Ben's goal line header save (similar to Barson's leg save in Santa Barbara), the Zips would have lost to UNC in the 2009 College Cup and not have played in the title game.

Tough call. I'm forever grateful to transfer Humpty for saving our bacon and draining the 3 to beat Toledo in 2009. But he left for a team that wasn't really a competitor to the Zips. If he'd have transferred to another MAC school, he'd have become "Bubba."

While UNC isn't a direct competitor, like a MAC program, it is definitely a program we compete against for championships. Speas will be trying to score on Meves at some point, so I hate him. Athletically only, of course. ;)

I agree that if the Zips face UNC again, I will be supporting the Zips. But, otherwise, I'm happy that Ben came to Akron and helped the Zips in both 2009 and 2010. I hope he does well and that I see him in a Columbus Crew (or other MLS) uniform someday. Glad he's going to an ACC school and not another MAC school or even a Big 11 school (especially that one in Columbus).

I'd rather he went to another MAC school. At UNC he could have a real impact on our title hopes. At Cleveland St. he could have a real impact trying to end our undefeated season. One matters, the other is just window dressing.

I respectfully disagree. We have no guarantee of winning the MAC even though the Zips have been dominant in the MAC. At UNC, he only affects us directly if we play UNC in the NCAA Tourney. There are many other affects he could have within the ACC (EDIT: detrimental to other teams such as Maryland) that could help us.

Your example especially favors him going to another MAC school since Cleveland State isn't in the MAC

Haha I'm sorry, you're right, I was just trying to point out that UNC could have a real impact on our fortunes while 99.9 percent of other schools don't.

I'm new to Akron and the MAC, what can I say? :-)
