K92
If you are like me and college football is your main sports passion, the countdown is on. Less than 50 days until the season kickoff. While I am first and foremost a Zips fan, I love CFB in general. I will watch NM/NMSt on a Thursday night, for crying out loud. As a daily listener to Bill King, I agree with him that CFB is God's sport (hallelujah). It seems like it takes forever to start and is over far too quickly. I know there are other ZN.Oers that feel like I do, so...what storylines intrigue you for the upcoming season other than the Zips?
K92
My first curiosity is the West Virginia Mountaineers. I was interested before the whole Dana Holgorsen/Bill Stewart soap opera, but even more so now. I want to see the offense in real game situation. They ran up and down the field in the spring game. If DH gets the offense at WVU firing on all cylinders like he had em going at Oklahoma State, look out. I can't see any defense in the Big East that can stop them. Game number four looms large, LSU at home. Should be very entertaining to follow the 'eers this year.
johnnyzip84
Great topic! Here are a few of the things I'll be following closely.1. Utah/Colorado in the PAC (especially the Utes). Utah was as good as anyone the year they smoked Bama in the Sugar Bowl. I'll be curious to see how they do playing a BCS dominated schedule.2. Will the Huskers be a force right away (although usually the Big 11 bores me)?3. Al Golden at The U4. Will this be JoePa's last?5. Will UMass get a boost from announcing the move to the MAC and FCS football?I'm a lover of all sports, but college football has something uniquely special about it. Have been an obsessive fan from about the age of 10. Let the games begin!!!Edit: interestingly enough Keener, I'm sitting in Cooper's Rock Forest (West Va) next to my brother and WVU grad as I type this! He's still perplexed by the whole coach-in-waiting thing. Ollie Luck should have handled that better from the start. There was no sense in keeping Stewart around once you had signed "your guy". K92
I'll put my next two curiosities together since they have a September 17th showdown. Oklahoma has been at the very top of quite a few preseason polls and Florida State certainly appears to be trending upward as a legitimate ACC frontrunner. This game is the only non-conference challenge for OU, FSU also plays Florida in a non-conference tilt. Lots riding on this game. I am not "sold" on either one of these teams, but the winner of this game definitely sets themselves up well to enter league play with a lot of confidence. Really looking forward to following these two teams.
Zipmeister
I am interested in seeing if the OSU can win more games than Akron this year. The season starts with a head to head match of the 1-11 Zips and the 0-13 Buckeyes.
K92
JZ84, you are right on the money about Utah. If they can come in and challenge for a PAC-12 South title right out of the box, it will speak volumes for non-AQs. I am definitely rooting for the Utes this year and will do the same for TCU next year. (If the Horned Frogs stay as strong as they have been, I can foresee them running roughshod through the BE.)Nebraska in the Big Ten is going to be monumentally historic. Sure to be lots of excitement when the Huskers come to town and also when their new conference mates visit Lincoln.JZ, although Ollie kinda botched the whole coach in waiting thing, your brother has to be excited for that offense to take the field. K92
Notre Dame always seems to get their fair share of pre-season hype no matter what the case but it has been cranked up a notch since Kelly got there. I have seen them ranked as high as #5 by the rags, which to me is waaaaaaaaaay optimistic. Usually pre-season #5's didn't lose to Navy and Tulsa the previous year. Just sayin'.Each year I look forward to watching SEC football. Although the league is really skewed to strength in the west, still it's great competition. Since I have no rooting interests in any of the other AQ conferences, my unbiased opinion is that the SEC is FAR superior to the next best conference. I have no idea why the SEC doesn't push for playoffs because at their strength, we could see 2 SEC teams in the championship game. I enjoy watching the top teams play defense. SEC seems to have d-linemen that can really get it. Can anyone emerge to run the table again this year? Can Boise run the table or will they stumble to an underdog like last year? I expect them to school Georgia, but TCU will be a real test. Can't wait to watch Kellen Moore's senior season.
K92
One more post from me, then I will shut my pie hole and listen for a minute. Other than watching the Zips, I am most interested in what happens in the rest of the MAC.Will Miami remain strong and will they have a QB controversy? Will Temple finally get to the MACCG? I really hope not. Will Can't continue to suck under the new staff? I really hope so.NIU and Toledo look to be the class of the West, with Western looking to get in there too. Should be fun to watch. Hopefully we will see some MAC wins over AQ competition. Do you think Toledo has a shot against OSU if they can keep from pissing down their leg? I guess we'll have a better idea after we watch the Zips.Looking forward to the season. Looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you at the home games as well.Go Zips go! Looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you at the home games as well.Go Zips go!I also graduated from Miami and follow them....although not as closely as the Zips. I believe their program will continue to improve. Their last coach was a lot like ICoach in regards to instilling team discipline. I do not believe he was that great of a coach though (and the jury is still out with ICoach even though I am not one of those criticizing him at this point). But I believe it is easier to follow a disciplinarian than the alternative. Last year they had a bit of luck and a favorable schedule. The new coach has a better pedigree (IMO) and is a Miami grad so I don't foresee a quick exit from him. I know many will deny and debate it here....but Miami has some recruiting advantages. So they will always do well recruiting MAC quality athletes. I was told by some players that Woody and BO would help recruit for Miami "if you don't go to X or get a scholarship at big school...Miami is a good alternative". I doubt that is true today (for sure with Bo and Woody) but they have a history that the Zips do not.I will be at the Miami game this year and will have to wear 2 hats. If Miami and UofA fight for the title each year as Miami and Marshall did in the past…that would be a dream come true for me.
GP1
4. Will this be JoePa's last?Always a good topic. My opinion is PSU fans had better hope not. Once JoePa retires, PSU becomes as relevant at the University of Illinois in the Big Ten and nationally. JoePa is the only thing interesting about PSU football. Lou Holtz once said, "Penn State is fifteen minutes from Altoona by telephone." PSU won't find another person who could make that part of the country relevant as Joe Pa did. It will be a sad day on many levels when he retires.

The season starts with a head to head match of the 1-11 Zips and the 0-13 Buckeyes. I had to remind an OSWho fan the other day that they shouldn't be laughing about our record last year without looking at their own. And when it's all said and done, it might not be their only winless season .

He doesn't coach anymore anyways. He is just a figure head. I have a feeling they will get a bright energetic young coach to come there and get PSU back on top. PA is still a hotbed for talent as well as the eastern US.

Buckzip
He doesn't coach anymore anyways. He is just a figure head."...for those of you that think..."I never said he was an old senile fool. However, if you watch the games you will see he doesn't even wear a head set. He is not in the game other than to yell at an assistant here and there. He paces and gives mean looks, but I don't beleive he is doing much coaching. He may make the tough decisions, should we go for it on 4th down, etc. However, his assistants run the games.I think he is active still in recruiting. Having that legend show up at your front door has to be awesome for any high school kid. However, I think that also can hurt. These kids have to beleive he won't be there for the next 4-5 years.
