2012 WG commit Reggie McAdams

Recommended Posts

"Commit Scoop: 6-foot-5/2012/WG/Reggie McAdams from Elida, Ohio(HS) has pledged to Keith Dambrot and the University of Akron Zips."

He also happens to be the starting QB for his high school's football team (and had picked up an offer from Can't State).

Sounds like coach McFadden ought to be able to work with this kid, having come from similar circumstances. Toledo board says that Michigan, Purdue and Cinci were interested in his QB talents, but no indication they offerred, possibly because they saw him leaning toward bb -- where he was coached by his father. There was also talk that Dayton was pursuing him for basketball. Looks like another tall sharp-shooting guard to add to the new stable of up-scale athletes for Dambrot. He put away 66 treys last season for Elida.

Looks like a potential future Mr. Clutch for the Zips.

And his resemblance to Nitro is uncanny, at least from a distance -- same hairstyle, similar size, similar facial features. I asked Hilltopper at the practice why Nitro wasn't in uniform. It took us awhile to notice that Nitro was in uniform on the floor. Then we thought McAdams was Nitro's brother before someone finally told us he was a visiting recruit.

I have seen Reggie play HS bball since his sophomore year and he has always been a man amongst boys. Comparing him to Nitro may not be the most accurate thing because although they may have the same height, hair, and shooting ability, Reggie is much wider than Nitro. He has Romeo Travis and Chris Mcknight's shoulders. If Reggie can grow another inch or two in his senior year (very probable), we may have another Romeo Travis (with a better slashing ability) in him.

For what it is worth, here is his football info from Rivals:

Pro-style quarterback

Elida, Ohio

Elida

Wt:190 lbs

40:4.9 secs

Bench Max:185

Squat Max:300

Vertical:30 inches

GPA:3.7

His GPA seems to indicate another solid kid.

I like how we lost Akbar, and his body was still warm when other quality guys filled the nanosecond void.

Allen Hanson (replaced by Ced), Dylan Ennis (replaced by Rico?*)...now Akbar.

Always quality guys waiting eagerly to snatch a scholarship and become a Zip. B)

* I recall Rico verbaling after Ennis reneged, even though he was 1 year ahead, eligibility-wise...maybe I'm wrong.

I recall there being a relatively significant gap between Ennis reneging and Rico committing. IIRC Ennis committed very early and then backed out of his committment before the 09-10 season. At the end of the 09-10 season when the Zips had some players leave the program (most notably Humpty Hitchens) Rico and Q were brought into the fold. I could be wrong on this as well, but that is how I remember it going down.

So since my lunch meeting is late, here's the timeline:

- Mid-March 2010, Zips lose to OU @ the Q, and to WGB @ the JAR

- March 24th, Abreu Commits to the Zips for fall 2010

- March-April: Three Zips guards depart the program (Humpty, Steward, Sullivan)

- June 2010: Ennis decommits (had been committed for fall 2011).

- September 2010: Ennis commits to Rice.

- November 2010 - March 2011: Abreu instrumental in NCAA appearance

And everyone lives happily ever after.

B) B) B) B)

Go Zips!

P.S. Regarding CK's original post, I agree .. KD has seemed to win with these transitions when they've happened. Cedric was an absolute program changer for the Zips, in his approach, intensity and work ethic.

Wow, color me embarassed on the Ennis/Rico timeline. Ohh well, you win some you lose some.

In regards to McAdams, he looks like a relatively solid commit, but I have to admit, I am getting puzzled by the recent rash of SG/SF types committing to the Zips. To me right now SG and SF are the two deepest and most talented positions on the team both for the short and long term. You have Walsh, Gilliam, Deji, Justice, Harney, Green and Diggs who can all play at least one of the two positions. Now we are going to add Kretzer and McAdams to the mix. Makes you wonder where all the playing time is going to come from.

I am old and my memory faulty so accept my apologies now if I my memory fails me. But....it seems to me that KD took some heat last year as a coach that could not coach guys up. The thinking was that guys did not continue to make progress or stalled after year 1. Now here is my question.... given that we seemed to get better players than the guys who left/de-commited, do you think it is that we actually got better talent or.. KD and staff were able to improve the guys who stayed/replaced de-commited at a faster pace than the schools that they left for??

Q and Gilliam are both juniors with only one season left to play after this one, and Walsh is a sophomore with two seasons left after the current one. So I don't think it's too early to be planning to reload at the 2/3 positions, especially when some of the 2s can also play backup point.

Looks like they're finally catching up. When I searched just a few days ago, I couldn't find a rating for McAdams on any of the services.

I believe an 89 would tie him with Chauncey Gilliam for second-highest-rated player on the team, as Gilliam also had an 89 in 2008

Zeke is obviously the highest-rated Zips player with a 92 in 2009.

Brian Walsh was rated at 88 back when he graduated HS in 2008, Nick Harney was an 87 in 2010, Q was only a 40, and Tree wasn't even rated.

This is very promising.
